Rasgulla - Traditional Bengali Sweet
2008-04-14 16:20:00 Gujaratis are famous for a sweet tooth, and though I grew up in a house that had racks of jars loaded with homemade sweets, I had an extra affinity for Bengali sweets like Rasgulla, Rasmalai and Sandesh, just because they have a juicy and rich texture made of ricotta cheese and khoya, and combined with "ras", made with either sugar syrup or milk, these delicious indian sweets never fail to impress! "Rasogullas", as they are called in West bengal, are favorites with not just the locals, people... Please Click the Title for the Full Post

What has Diwali got to do with the IIP – Index of Industrial Production?
2008-01-12 14:33:00 IIP represents roughly one fourth of the total value of goods and services produced in the country. This makes it an important indicator worth monitoring periodically. Industrial production grew 5.3% in November 2007 from a year earlier; its slowest this fiscal. The cumulative growth for the first 8 months of the fiscal stood at 9.2%. Explaining that it is just a statistical blip rather than a reflection of any tangible slowdown in the economy, economists have come with the ‘Diwali effect’ theory. They attribute the lower figure to a cut back in production in the festival month after aggressively building up inventory in the previous months to meet the demand, apart from a high base in November, 2006 when industrial output has risen 15.8%. During the festival month manufacturing plants are closed for a while. Last year Diwali fell in October and so did the growth rate of the IIP to 4.5%. But the index rose sharply (15.8%) in the post festival month of Novem...

KHEER / INDIAN RICE PUDDING...Special Occasion Food
2007-12-12 17:56:00 "Seize the moment. Remember all those women on the Titanic who waved off the dessert cart."Erma BombeckTraditional Indian Desserts...KHEER / RICE PUDDINGHere's one of our great Indian desserts, quite similar to the English rice pudding, & much loved in our part of the world. The earlier recipe for rice pudding that I posted a while ago doesn't use condensed milk; this one does, and tastes very rich & creamy too. It is a popular egg less dessert, & a great way to finish off a meal. I find the freshly grated nutmeg gives this a warm and comforting flavour. The raisins & almonds are quite optional, & one, or both, can be given the miss if need be.Ingredients:Rice ? 1 cup (washed & dried)Milk ? 1 ½ ltrs (whole milk)Condensed Milk ? 1 can / 400mlSaffron strand ? 1 pinchGreen Cardamom ? 5-6/ seeds crushed in pestle & mortarNutmeg ? 1/4 tsp / freshly gratedRaisins ? 1 handfulAlmonds ? 1 handful / without skinSugar if required Method: Grind the rice in a coffee...

2007-11-22 08:00:00 I know Diwali was on Nov 9, and this post should have been made earlier this month. But Orkut already had a cool theme for this occasion. Diwali at AIM
2007-11-16 09:35:00 Last week, the AIM community celebrated the Diwali Festival, the Indian festival that celebrates the triumph of good over evil. Thus it has been termed as "The Festival of Lights."I personally first heard about this feast from my Indian classmates and even our batch, MBA first years, were in-charge of putting the event together. This is good things I like about AIM-- it lets get exposed to new cultures without really leaving home. My Indian classmates treat Diwali the same way I would do to Christmas-- a really festive time and lots of celebration. I also attended my very first Diwali party here in AIM.Speaking of parties, I'm glad I happened upon this video, courtesy of my classmate Ravi Shekhar, to show one of the nice production numbers the second years had for the Diwali party:

Paneer Jalfrezi (A spicy end to a very sweet Diwali)
2007-11-13 10:40:00 After a very sweet Diwali I thought a spicy Jalfrezi was a good recipe to post . This is a firm favourite in my house. Actually anything with paneer is always welcome in my family, that's particularly because I adore paneer. My husband teases me by saying that my face glows with happiness when I cook ,eat or even buy paneer. I don't believe him and know he exaggerates. But I can't deny the fact that I love it. I don't know what the word Jalfrezi means but I have always associated the word Jal with fire and therefore make this dish a little more fiery than normal. So here's my very simple recipe for a spicy and mouth-watering Paneer Jalfrezi:Ingredients:200 gms Paneer cubes,1 large onion chopped (chop them into small square shapes if possible),3/4 cloves garlic crushed,1/2 inch piece ginger grated or 1 tspn ginger paste,2 large tomatoes coarsely pureed,1 tspn concentrated tomato puree (optional),1 large green capsicum cut into small square shapes,4 baby corn (each one cut into 2 ...

Diwali
2007-11-13 06:35:00 Diwali is one of the major Indian festivals celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains and infact all creeds of people. Known as the festival of lights, Diwali is observed on the new moon day of Kartika, as per the Hindu calendar that falls in the months of October and November. The celebrations commence two days prior and ends two days later than this religiously fixed date. Diwali, colloquially called Deepawali, is celebrated exactly 20 days after Dussehra. In 2007, the festival is celebrated on November 9. People celebrate Diwali by decorating their homes with lights, fireworks, gift-giving, worship, prayers and religious rituals. On the occasion, people purchase gold, gifts and household appliances. People distribute food and sweets as acts of charity during the festival. Companies offer huge discounts on products during Diwali to attract customers. Business communities start their financial year on Diwali and open new account books on this day. Offices and schools remain closed on t...

Last Day of Diwali
2007-11-12 07:05:00 Today is the last day of Diwali. It is Bhau Bhij, the day when entire generations of our family gathered under one roof. There were as many aartis as there were generations. Men were honored by their sisters. What they got was diyas in their face, what the sisters got was envelopes stuffed with money. Well, we also bought them socks or ties, just so that the exchange was fair. The loot was then divided over all cousins and I remember feeling rather cheated when all that came my way was a measly Rs. 50. In those days, it was about US$2.50. But the excitement, the teasing, the laughter and gaiety was all priceless.I haven't celebrated Bhau Bhij for over a decade now. I have also heard that the celebrations in our extended family are rather low key now. Several of the oldest generation that held the family together, in particular my grandmother, are no more. Most of my generation are dispersed all over India and the globe. Our children do not know each other and that is truly very sad...

2007-11-10 19:47:00 Never have I been such an enthu pataka ('enthusiastic cracker' for the uninitiated) about taking pictures on Diwali! But, I promised you, my beautiful friends and readers, that I will share images from my home, and I being quite the gentle(wo)man when it comes to 'published on net' promises, I did exactly that! And had a lot of fun in doing so too!Let me re-live with you the beautiful day it was yesterday, when we celebrated Diwali....Welcome...Lord Ganesha (made of brass) presides in his niche, content with the offerings of marigold. The two brass bowls belong to my grand mom. Meditation and Inspiration of Diwali
2007-11-09 21:40:00 God!Ekam-eva-dvitiyam.Only the One, without a second. The Light of lights, the self-luminous inner light of the Self is ever shining steadily in the chamber of your heart.God is the Light of Heaven and Earth, affirms the Quran (Sura 24:35), signifying, God is the Real Illuminator of both the Inner Unmanifest and the Outer Manifest Realms. The Torah says, within our world of illusions and darkness, only in God?s light do we see light (Psalm 36:9). The New Testament testifies, God is the light of the world, whoever follows will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life (John 8:12).Sit quietly. Close your eyes. Withdraw the senses. Fix the mind on this Supreme Light and enjoy the real Diwali, by attaining illumination of the soul.He who Himself sees all but whom no one beholds, Who illumines the intellect, the sun, the moon and the stars and the whole universe but whom they cannot illumine, He indeed is Brahman, He is the inner Self.Celebrate the real Deepavali by living in...

Kesar Rasmalai - Diwali Special !!
2007-11-09 19:15:00 Diwali is one of the most popular Indian festival and would always remain to be so. Though each region in India has a special way of celebrating it, and a unique story behind it, in the northern part of India it is celebrated as the return of "Ram (a lord king) along with Sita (his wife) and Lakshman (his brother)" from his 14 years of exile after his victory over Ravana (obviously, the demon king!). To commemorate his return to Ayodhya (his birthplace), his subjects illuminated the kingdom and burst crackers. Hence, following the tradition, Indians celebrate it by enjoying sweets, music, fireworks and family get-togethers. The day after Diwali also heralds the beginning of a New financial year for some of the Hindus. So here's a beautiful, spectacular and rich-looking Indian dessert recipe (traditionally a bengali sweet) that I am sure many of you must have tasted in Indian restaurants - the Kesar Rasmalai!Ingredients4 cups whole milk for channa1 cup sugar3 cups of water6-7 strand...

Tartness, Diwali, and treats from the UK
2007-11-09 16:17:00 It’s been a slow week in my kitchen. I actually did make some chole (aka chana masala) last night, but I’m not posting it here because I wasn’t completely enthralled with it. It was good, but it didn’t taste the same as my regular version, and I know why that is. I normally use this garam masala, but last night, I used this chana masala mix that I had bought a while back but had never used. What's the difference? Here's the difference:Garam masala: Cumin, Black pepper, Coriander, Cardamom seeds, Cloves, Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Dry Ginger, Bay leaf, Caraway, Mace.Chana masala: Coriander, Salt, Dry Mango, Pomegranate seeds, Chilli, Cumin, Musk melon, Black Pepper, Black Salt, Fenugreek leaves, Cloves, Mint, Nutmeg, Dry Ginger, Cinnamon, Bay leaf, Cardamom seeds, Caraway, Mace. Dry mango, pomegranate seeds, and musk melon all add tartness. (By the way, all of these things are dried and ground up and added to the mix; there aren't whole pomegranate seeds in there.) Blac...

Happy Deepavali / Diwali | The Festival of Light
2007-11-09 07:33:00 Deepavali 07 Originally uploaded by TrIXInc. Today Diwali, Divali, or Deepavali is celebrated by Hindus, Jains and Sikhs across the globe as the "Festival of Light," where the lights or lamps signify victory of good over the evil within every human being.. Esoteric Significance:While Deepavali is popularly known as the "festival of lights", the most significant esoteric meaning is "the awareness of the inner light".Central to Hindu philosophy, is the assertion that beyond the physical body and mind is pure, infinite, and eternal, called the Atman, the Supreme Self. Just as we celebrate the birth of our physical being, Deepavali is the celebration of this Inner Light, in particular the knowing of which outshines all darkness (removes all obstacles and dispels all ignorance), awakening the individual to one's true nature, not as the body, but as the unchanging, infinite, imminent and transcendent reality. With the realization of the Atman, comes universal compassion, love, and the a...

Stars Reveals Plan for Diwali
2007-11-09 00:48:00 They are the stars who light up Bollywood?s glitzy sky 24/7, but for Diwali, they shine just that much brighter. The bombs among them, ah yes, they sizzle otherwise too, but during the festive season, you would forgive them if they kept their performances at home for family and friends. So, what do the stars do for Diwali then? BT made some phone calls and came up with these answers...Amitabh Bachchan: Nothing special. My mother?s condition keeps us worried. Diwali is always an open house at Jalsa. And, yes, since this is Aishwarya?s first Diwali in her new house, it is special for us.John Abraham: I will be spending Diwali with family and friends. No crackers, but there will be lots of candles, I love the way the whole country is lit up.Priyanka Chopra: I?ll be with family. I can?t think of a better way to celebrate Diwali.Shilpa Shetty: I?m in the midst of my show in Manchester. For Diwali I?ll be performing in London and then attending a party hosted by the Hindujas.Akshaye Khanna...
