Dodd-Frank: The best (or worst) is yet to come
2011-12-29 14:00:00
This one pretty much blew my mind. The Dodd-Frank Act, a package of financial reforms signed into law in July 2010 in the wake of the credit crisis, isn't even close to being completely enacted. In fact, The Washington Post's...

2011-01-07 14:48:00
Washington, Jan 6 - Upon being sworn in for her third term in the House of Representatives, Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (MN-06) introduced new legislation, H.R. 87 Bill Summary & Status 112th Congress (2011 - 2012) H.R.87, to repeal the Dodd-Frank financial reform bill, one of the most far-reaching legislative items of the previous Congress. Congresswoman Bachmann released the following statement about the repeal legislation:?I?m pleased to offer a full repeal of the job-killing Dodd-Frank financial regulatory bill. Dodd-Frank grossly expanded the federal government beyond its jurisdictional boundaries. It gave Washington bureaucrats the power to interpret and enforce the legislation with little oversight.?Dodd-Frank also failed to address the taxpayer-funded liabilities of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Real financial regulatory reform must deal with these lenders who were a leading cause of our economic recession. True reform must also end the bailout mindset that was perpetua...

In Defense Of Chris Dodd
2009-04-08 23:07:00
(And I also posted over here.)I have to say that, like many of you I?m sure, I?ve been watching the deterioration of Chris Dodd?s political fortunes with more than a bit of alarm. And I?ve been reluctant to say anything, that is, until I read this post from Megan McArdle of The Atlantic.I?m sure McArdle is a pretty bright individual, but I really have to wonder why she would write a post sourcing an editorial in the Augusta (GA) Chronicle attacking Dodd over the bonuses paid to executives of AIG (the editorial is fundamentally wrong for reasons I will note shortly). Another clue as to the partisan nature of the Chronicle editorial is the fact that it praises South Carolina Repug Gov. Mark Sanford for ?(doing) his best to wean his state off the cocaine of federal money. He knows it's corrupting. He knows it will mask the state's needs rather than fill them. He knows we are stealing from our children.?Gosh, what noble rhetoric from the Chronicle. Would that I and others had heard it...
Dodd & Obama Lied, People Are Pissed
2009-03-20 00:05:00
Sen. Dodd and President Obama have repeatedly lied about the policy and process which permitted the AIG bonuses to be paid out.  Obama’s Stimulus Package is the vehicle that allowed this scandal to happen. At least Dodd admitted he’s been lying today. So Chris Dodd admitted he misled CNN, telling them on Tuesday he had nothing to ...
Who is Defending Chris Dodd?
2009-03-12 18:35:00
Mark Hemingway at The Corner: I was perusing an old column by Kevin Rennie, the former Connecticut state legislator that broke the cottage story, and noticed this interesting tidbit: During the fourth quarter of 2008, Dodd’s Senate re-election campaign — Friends of Chris Dodd, indeed — paid $65,000 in legal fees to the firm Perkins Coie. So far, Dodd has spent more than $120,000 of campaign funds on his defense. The law firm is the single largest expense of his re-election campaign and it is for a personal matter. From October through December of last year, Dodd’s re-election campaign spent nearly a quarter of what it raised in that period on legal fees. Rennie notes that a large chunk of those campaign funds came from banking interests. So I don’t know about you, but I find it awfully reassuring that in the middle of a major economic crisis and the accompanying government bank bailouts, the head of the Senate Banking Committee is indebted to bank lobbies to p...

Dodd And the Polls
2009-02-11 17:49:00
I can’t say that I’m sorry at all to see a new Quinnipiac University poll, that reports Chris Dodd is in even more serious electoral trouble than we thought before:   A total of 42 percent of voters say they “definitely” or “probably” will vote to reelect Sen. Dodd in 2010, while 51 percent say the “probably won’t” or “definitely won’t” vote for him. By a 54 - 24 percent margin, Connecticut voters say they are not satisfied with Sen. Dodd’s explanation of allegations that he received preferential mortgage treatment and 56 percent of voters say they are less likely to vote for him because of this controversy. His being linked to the current economic woes can’t help him much, either, nor his cheerleading of Geither, yesterday. Of course, there’s always the short memory syndrome.   Addendum: (Bit) Yes, I noticed David’s comments after I posted this. (Shrug) BitsBlog Tags: mortgage, conn...

Dodd Releases Countrywide Docs… Or Does He?
2009-02-03 17:08:00
Chris Dodd has suppsoedly gotten around to releasing details of his Countrywide loans.  But what he’s offered us in response to the 6 months of hammering leaves a lot to be desired. The Hartford Courant has what documents he’s offered… (a couple reports and a press release) posted on their website. There’s a lot missing, however. Let me give you a word picture of things; In submarine warfare, there’s a tactic which was used to good effect often enough. If you’re on the bottom, getting hit with depth charges, you sometimes can get away with blowing some loose parts out the torpedo tubes… anlong with anyone who has been killed, to make the attacking ship thinnk you’re sunk, your hull broken. That tactic is of a kind with what Dodd is giving us here. He’s trying to fake us out. Look closely, however, and you’ll notice a few things. First we notice that the only document with any meat on it is a report generated by a compan...

Chris Dodd Fails to Disclose Dubious Dealings
2008-10-20 15:00:00
While this blog has been particularly harsh on Barney Frank, Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, for his responsibility for the mortgage meltdown (here, here, here, here and here), he at least acknowledged the need for regulation of the government-supported enterprises (GSEs) Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in the current Congress.  Still, the Massachusetts ...

Christopher Dodd, 63, who has two daughters, age 6 and 2, with his second wife Jackie Clegg Dodd. And on the right, Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee, 65, has two toddlers with his second wife, Jeri Kehn.Email Print Buzz up!on Yahoo! What exactly do we read in these tea leaves? First, that these two candidates mirror a demographic trend. Older fathers are on the rise. That's not too surprising. But here's the rub: the children of older fathers face particularly high risks of schizophrenia and autism. According to a g...
A HousingPANIC message to Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Hillary Clinton and any
2008-05-12 11:55:00
Barney, Chris, Hillary and Friends,If you spend one penny of direct taxpayer money, or expose the American taxpayer to any more risk than we already have (Fannie, Freddie, FHLB, FHA, etc) THEN WE WILL HOUND YOU, WE WILL TAKE OVER YOUR OFFICES, WE AND WE WILL VOTE YOU OUT THE NEXT CHANCE WE GET.WE ARE THE MAJORITY. The vast majority of Americans who rent, who OWN, and who didn't treat homes as lottery tickets these past few years. WE ARE THE HONEST ONES, THE RATIONAL ONES, THE SANE ONES. And we not allow you to bail out fools, flippers and fraudsters with our money. Period. It was rampant fraud and wild speculation you corrupt monkeys. And we're pretty sure you know that. So why the rush to bail out Housing Gamblers? Is it your REIC masters, calling the shots? Is it because you "own" homes yourselves, and don't want their values to go down further? Is it because you feel propping up artificially high housing prices is good for America, or for future generations? Or is it ...

Chris Dodd: ?We Need to Get Behind a Candidate (Obama)?
2008-03-29 01:14:00
Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT-Obama) has joined Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT-Obama) in telling Clinton essentially to shut up and go away (Dodd doing it a little more discretely than Leahy).  Today after a meeting in Norwich, CT, Dodd told reporters: “Obviously, if they keep at it, this nomination won’t be worth much, in my opinion.  This idea of backbiting ...

Two days ago my Mom, the most heroic person I know, Pat Yerger, said "Why not just split the delegates? Give half to Obama and half to Clinton and let's get on with it." Well, I guess Senator Chris Dodd was listening, because that's what he suggests too! Great minds think alike!

Chris Dodd Endorses Barack Obama
2008-02-27 03:41:00
Formally announced through email this morning, Chris Dodd has chosen to endorse Barack Obama: We have been through a lot in this past year and your friendship and support have meant so much to me.  That is why I wanted to let you know of my decision to endorse a Democratic candidate for President - and that I have decided to support Barack Obama. We all understand how much is at stake in this election and that it is more important than ever that we put a Democrat in the White House. And while both of our Party’s remaining candidates are extremely talented and would make excellent commanders-in-chief, I am throwing my support to the candidate who I believe will open the most eyes to our shared Democratic vision. I’m deeply proud to be the first 2008 Democratic presidential candidate to endorse Barack Obama.  He is ready to be President.  And I am ready to support him - to work with him and for him and help elect him our 44th President. Put simply, I believe Barack Obam...

Dodd Endorses Obama
2008-02-26 20:08:00
Connecticut Senator Chris Dodd announced his support for Barack Obama today in Cleveland, Ohio, becoming the first former Democratic candidate to endorse this cycle. Dodd abandoned his own presidential bid January 3, following a disappointing showing in Iowa. "I believe that Barack Obama has the experience, the ability, the vision to lead this country, to make a difference both at home and abroad. He's ready to be president and I'm ready to support him," Dodd told supporters.Though coming out for Obama is a blow to Clinton, Dodd suggested his endorsement shouldn't reflect negatively upon her campaign. Speaking with Obama, Dodd stressed party unity as the key reason for his support. "It is now the hour to come together," Dodd noted. "This is the moment for Democrats and Independents and others to come together, to get behind this candidacy." He added a word of caution to both campaigns, saying, "Be careful this week. We have good people running. We have remarkable people run...
Sen. Christopher Dodd to Endorse Obama
2008-02-26 15:18:00
Democratic Sen. Christopher Dodd of Connecticut plans to endorse former presidential rival Barack Obama. Dodd will endorse his colleague, a senator from Illinois, in Cleveland on Tuesday, according to a Democratic official close to Dodd who requested anonymity because no formal announcement had been made. Dodd's support, coupled with his liberal credentials, could provide a boost for Obama as major contests near in big states such as Ohio and Texas on March 4. Obama has won some key Democratic endorsements in recent weeks, including Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy, a close friend of Dodd. Obama and rival Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton had been vying for Dodd's support since he exited the presidential race after a poor showing in the Iowa caucus last month. Dodd, who won his Senate seat in 1980 and chaired the Democratic National Committee from 1995-1996, has long-standing ties to the Clintons. Dodd is a "superdelegate," one of nearly 800 Democratic officeholders and party offic...

Senator Dodd proposes Government Housing Gambler Mortgage Bailout Corporati
2008-02-08 05:29:00
And then, right on time, the monkeys in government proposed a new government entity that would get the US taxpayer into the mortgage business, all in the hopes of propping up plummeting housing prices and bailing out mortgage-fraud-committing housing gamblers.Gee, I thought America was a free market economy who believed in the sanctity of contracts. My bad. I forgot, the Democrats are in charge now. And the investment banks want to see a return on their DC investment. In the end, all of this crap - Dodd's RTC2 plan, Clinton's 5-year interest-rate-freeze stupidity, and the goings-on with Fannie, Freddie and FHA, just show how important housing prices are to America and our fake Ponzi Scheme economy. When home prices were shooting to the moon and detached from price-to-rent and price-to-income metrics, nobody in government said boo. But prices start coming down to rational levels, and EVERYONE FREAKS THE F*CK OUT.Memo to the monkeys in DC - LET THE FU*KING MARKET CORRECT. When home ...

I guess they thought they had a chance to surprise people in Iowa, but alas, they both came in with less than one percent of the vote. Biden said: “There is nothing sad about tonight. We are so incredibly proud of you all,” Biden told his supporters. “So many of you have sacrificed for me and I am so indebted to you. I feel no regret. I ain’t goin’ away. “I want to thank the people of Delaware and I’ll be going back to the Senate as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee,” he said. Obama and Huckabee Win Iowa, Chris Dodd Drops Out
2008-01-04 04:47:00
With 96 percent of the precincts reporting, Barack Obama has sealed a victory in Iowa with 38 percent of the vote. Edwards and Clinton are in a tight race for second place. Edwards currently has 30 percent of the votes and Clinton is close behind with 29 percent. The two are separated by only 11 delegate votes. Mike Huckabee received 34 percent and Mitt Romney came in second with 25 percent. CNN announced tonight that Chris Dodd would be dropping out of the race after a poor showing in Iowa. Dodd had moved his family to Iowa so that he could spend as much time campaigning there as possible. Clinton also had a bad night. Clinton might end up finishing third in Iowa which is a devastating blow to her campaign. Hillary currently leads in New Hampshire but after this showing could take a hit there in the polls. Presedential Candidate Chris Dodd Drops Out Of Race
2008-01-04 04:39:00
After an extremely poor showing in tonight's Iowa caucus, Connecticut Senator Chris Dodd has decided to abandon his run for the White House and drop out of the race.Strapped by low support, lack of resources and financial stability, Dodd had no other choice than to surrender his attempt to provide change for the country that so dearly needs it. While the Dodd Squad was terminated tonight, it must be recognized that he put forth a valiant effort and it's essential for him to be rewarded for the hard work he consistently showed for several months.

Developing: Dodd To Drop Out?
2008-01-04 02:33:00
Chris Dodd has apparently confirmed that he will drop out if he doesn't finish stronger than fourth place tonight. Such an acknowledgment isn't a huge surprise. Dodd has failed to get on the ballot is several February 5th states and after spending almost all of his time and resources in Iowa (he literally moved his family there), a poor showing would indeed reflect that his message is failing to resonate with voters. The big story then becomes, who does Dodd endorse and when?
