LA to Dodgers: Drop dead
2009-10-20 02:07:00
The National Football League is considering adding a franchise in the nation's second largest market, Los Angeles, after the Bears-Falcons game beat a pennant series game featuring the Los Angeles Dodgers of Los Angeles in the Los Angeles market by 15% in the overnight tv ratings. That's right. A regular season football game featuring a team 2,077 miles from Los Angeles and a team 2,176 miles from Los Angeles (guess which city is farther, win a pair of Perfect Plus Panty Hose), had a better rating than a National League Championship Series game featuring a team 0 miles from Los Angeles. "It's kind of shocking that Chicago and Atlanta are about the same distance from LA," said NBC honcho Dick...

White Sox Trade Thome to Dodgers, Contreras to Rockies
2009-09-01 06:27:00
The Jim Thome era in Chicago officially ended Monday night as he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers for minor league infielder Justin FullerThe White Sox have traded Jim Thome and cash to the Dodgers for minor league infielder Justin Fuller.  They have also sent Jose Contreras and cash to the Rockies for right-hander Brandon Hynick. The two deals save the White Sox roughly $3 million in payroll for the rest of the of the 2009 season, (depending on how much cash the Sox gave up) but also give both players a chance to be in a pennant race through the month of September.I'm happy for Jim Thome, as he's one of the good guys in the game today, and...

Game Notes For Thursday @ Dodgers
2009-08-21 03:42:00
* The Cubs snapped a 4-game road losing streak with a 7-1 victory in San Diego last night. Chicago is now 2-6 in its last eight games away from Wrigley Field overall. * The Dodgers dropped a 3-2 decision to the Cardinals last night and have now lost five of their last six home games overall. Los Angeles committed three errors Wednesday - just the second such game of 2009 for the Dodgers. * The Cubs and Dodgers split four games in May at Wrigley Field and since the beginning of 2006, the two teams have played 10 games at Dodger Stadium with each squad winning five times. * Tom Gorzelanny is 2-1 with a 5.27 ERA in three starts...
Dodgers Post Mortem
2009-06-24 05:25:00
The Sox come home and 'poof!' the offense disappears. The Sox have scored all of 34 runs in their last 12 home games and don't look now but they trail Detroit by six. Despite Kenny Williams' comments earlier today to the Chicago Tribune's Mark Gonzales, if they fall eight, nine, ten games back, they'll have no choice... none...but to sell as much as they can and get what they can regardless of how that impacts attendance. That's just the reality of the situation. And you wonder what Kenny and the front office were thinking when they got an up close and personal look at Orlando Hudson, a guy they were rumored to have interest in, before Kenny decided to take the off...
Giants Get Back At Dodgers
2009-05-01 01:43:00
Like they did to San Diego during their last home stand, the Giants got some revenge on their other southern California foe LA Dodgers at AT&T Park this week. The Giants didn't sweep the Dodgers, but they took 2 out of 3 in the series and looked much more capable of matching up with the NL West's elite team than they did in their showing in Los Angeles in the season's opening week.Tim Lincecum made his 3rd straight dominant outing, carrying a shutout into the seventh before surrendering a few hits and couple of runs. Lincecum's line for the day didn't look quite as good as he was throwing the ball, but he still got the win while going 7+ innings and striking out 8. "The Freak" has hit his grove after starting out slowly, and looks completely back on track now. In fact, the whole Giants rotation is really throwing the ball well, kind of like everybody expected them to coming into the year. Even Barry Zito has put together back-to-back quality outings and looks confident and ...
Friday Headlines/Dodgers @ Cubs 2:05 CT/3:05 ET Gameday Audio
2009-03-06 15:21:00
See all that dirt flying around? That's scrapiness in action. After two glorious days of watching a bunch of guys we've never heard of and who probably have no chance of making the team (Other Blanco, we're looking at you) take on the White Sox in Vegas, today the Cubs had back to Mesa and its hordes of Sun City residents to take on the Dodgers. Ryan Dempster to start. Don't look now, but my guy Heilman is having a pretty darn good camp. Neither pitcher (Heilman and Kroeger) was scored upon over three innings on Thursday, with Heilman allowing one hit and fanning three, and Marquez giving up one hit and striking out two. Each pitcher has made two scoreless starts this spring against the crosstown rival, covering five innings in total, but they seem more concerned about preparing for the season as opposed to teams they are facing or their eventual pitching role. "My mind-set coming in was that I was going to get an opportunity to start and show them what I could do," Heilman sa...

Phillies Upend Dodgers; Rays Shock The Formerly Invinicble Jon Lester
2008-10-14 17:25:00
The 2008 NLCS seems close to being wrapped up as the Philadelphia Phillies thanks to late homers by Shane Victorino -- who has seemed to be in the middle of everything -- and Matt Stair's long shot in the 8th led them over the Los Angeles Dodgers, 7-5.Tuesday's action had none of the drama of the previous night, and Philadelphia staged a dramatic comeback as the knocked up the Los Angeles bullpen in the latter half of the game. Derek Lowe was strong -- especially giving up two runs in the first inning -- and went only five innings; however, he kept the Dodgers in the game long for them to take the lead in the bottom of fifth by taking a 3-2 lead. Now, why he was taken out by Joe Torre early -- who knows (maybe it's the fact he pitched on 3 days rest); however, that decision might have cost the Dodgers.Joe Blanton -- the starting pitcher for the Phillies -- went five innings and gave up three runs, but it was Chad Durbin who opened up the flood gates by giving up a 2-run-homer to C...

2008-10-10 16:55:00
Last night, the Dodgers and Phillies played game one of the NLCS and everything came down to a fateful sixth inning. Los Angeles went up 2-0 in the top of the first inning, thanks to Manny Ramirez -- again -- with an RBI double; thereafter, Blake DeWitt plated Matt Kemp with an RBI.Derek Lowe had things in control in the sixth inning; however, Shane Victorino reached base on a error off Rafael Furcal, and the Chase Utley homered to tie the game. Two batters, Pat Burrell hit his third homer of the postseason -- a two-run shot -- to make the difference. Cole Hamels was shaky in the first, but kept things in order with yet another post-season start for the victory. Lowe was good, but his two mistakes -- homers to Utley and Burrel -- cost them the win.Like I said, if the Dodgers fall 2-0 in the series, it will be hard for them to come back. It was a very well played game yesterday night in the City of Brotherly Love, and I expect the same tonight in Beantown as the Red Sox and Rays begi...

2008-10-05 00:00:00
On August 27, 1883, the volcano on the island of Krakatoa violently erupted in the most cataclysmic natural disaster in modern history.  Ships were rocked from the resulting tsunami as far away as South Africa.  The eruption sent ash 80 kilometers into the atmosphere, and created noctilucent clouds that colored sunsets around the world a deep shade of red. Upon seeing the sunset and reflecting upon his own madness and the meaninglessness of existence, Edvard Munch wrote: I was walking along a path with two friends-the sun was setting-suddenly the sky turned blood red-I paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned on the fence-there was blood and tongues of fire above the blue-black fjord and the city-my friends walked on, and I stood there trembling with anxiety-and I sensed an infinite scream passing through nature. Sounds about right. The Pitchers But there is hope.  For the Cubs, right-handed power pitcher Rich Harden takes the mound.  Harden has been dominant sinc...
NLDS Game Two Thread; Dodgers at Cubs, 9:30 EDT/8:30 CT: Deja Vu? NO!!!!
2008-10-03 01:30:00
Had enough analysis about that first game yet? Doom and gloom set in for you? Convinced this series is over? Well, this is what I have to say, and this goes for the Cubs fans in a silent Wrigley Field (minus Doc and Co.) last night. The Cubs may well lose this game, and maybe even the next. But fuck all those stats, the loser of Game 1 has gone on to lose 24 of 28 series, the Cubs are 0-fer with Dick Stockton, blahblahblah. Let's just play, and see what happens. Below, I present to you tonight's starter: The Many Faces of Carlos Zambrano He can throw a no-hitter, or give up seven runs in 1.2 innings. He can hit a 462-foot home run or swing mindlessly and break his bat over his knee. He has conversations with himself, or maybe it's with someone else we can't "see." No one really knows who (or what) the Cubs are going to get tonight. A start would be not walking the pitcher (twice). Z pitched superbly last year in the playoffs, and the Cubs need the same tonight, as long as Lo...
Let's Get This Party Started Right: Dodgers @ Cubs 5:30 CDT/6:30 EDT
2008-10-01 23:00:00
Here we go. I was all fired up to write this diary this morning, but, as I sit down to write it, I realize that there really isn't a whole lot left to say. Tonight we send our most consistent pitcher, Ryan Dempster (and if you say that you knew he would be our most consistent pitcher at any time before, say, June, you might want to check your pants, for they are on fire), to the hill against Derek Lowe, who has been more-than-red-hot in the last month. He's been like. . . magenta hot. The good news is that Dempster has more wins at home than any other pitcher in the NL this season. The bad news is that we probably have to listen to Dick Stockton call the game again. Let's up he's gotten that whole "Chicago Cowboys/Dallas Cubs" thing finally worked out. The offensive matchup in this series really comes down to this: we have the best offense in the NL (first in runs scored, second in OBP) and they have Manny. If Dempster can keep Manny and Ethier under control tonight, we should ...
Cubs v. Dodgers: By the Numbers
2008-10-01 14:28:00
We at LOHO have always been dedicated to bringing you, our loyal readers, unique and cutting-edge analysis. To that end, we offer this unique NLDS series preview. There have been dozens, if not hundreds of series previews written (including Cubbie Julie's own most excellent two-part series on the main page here), some analyzing the merits of the Dodger bats against the Cubs' pitching, the Cubs' hitting against the Dodgers' bullpen, et cetera. But I assure you, the following perspective is something you can only find at League of Her Own. Hey, wait a second here . . . Baseball has always been about the numbers, it's one thing that makes baseball great. And so . . . I give you . . . Cubs v. Dodgers: Breakdown by Uniform Number! #1: Cubs: Kosuke Fukudome / Dodgers: Pee Wee Reese (retired) Okay, I'll admit, Fukudome has been slumping in the second half. But even at his best, he's no Pee Wee Reese. Advantage: DODGERS #2: Cubs: Ryan Theriot / Dodgers: Tommy Lasorda (retired) I ...
The Matchup: Cubs v. Dodgers On Paper
2008-09-30 19:30:00
Be afraid. Be very afraid. (Relax, I'm kidding. I would have said that about any team we were matched with). It's no secret around here that most of us aren't too thrilled with being matched with the Dodgers. Of all the teams that were a possibility, they're the least known quantity, mostly because they are playing like a completely different team now than when we last played them. That said, to ease everyone's minds a little, let's take a look at how we match up with the Dodgers. Today we'll look at pitching, tomorrow at hitting. I promise, it's not really that scary. Well, it's a little scary. Follow me below the jump. The Cubs were 4-2 against the Dodgers this season, with Dempster, Howry (yes HOWRY) and Marquis all recording wins against. Kerry also notched 4 saves in 7 games. Let's look at the scheduled pitching matchups first. Dempster (17-6, 2.96, 1.21) v. Lowe (14-11, 3.24, .113) Z (14-6, 3.91, 1.29) v. Billingsley (16-10, 3.14, 1.34) Harden (10-2, 2.07, 1.06) v...

Andy LaRoche is expected to be called up from triple-A Las Vegas for the Dodgers' game in San Diego today, replacing rookie shortstop Chin-lung Hu, who was optioned to triple-A Las Vegas on Monday. LaRoche was competing with Nomar Garciaparra to be the Dodgers' starting third baseman in spring training but suffered a torn ligament in his right thumb requiring surgery. He was reinstated from the disabled list May 3, but the emergence of rookie third baseman Blake DeWitt blocked his path to the majors.LaRoche, who was hitting .267 with five home runs and 26 runs batted in in 37 games at triple-A, played at first and second base in recent weeks to increase the ways he could be useful to the big-league club. Manager Joe Torre said last week that when LaRoche was called up, he would be used as a backup at first and third.

Experieced is gained slowly as Dodgers are finding out
2008-06-09 13:53:00
The talk turned to potential versus performance, to knowing when players labeled young by the calendar or by inexperience are held to the same standard as their elders. "They're just about there," Dodgers General Manager Ned Colletti said of the team's core of youngsters. "They're getting to the point where with their experience you should start to see more than less, not less than more."Taking that a step further, the Dodgers should be winning more than less, and they're not. Their 3-1 loss to the Cubs on Sunday left them with a split of their four-game series and without a handle on where they're headed according to Los Angeles Times columnist Helene Elliott. They thought they could build on winning the two middle games but were clueless at the plate in being held to four hits Sunday by Cubs starter Jason Marquis, who began the game with a 5.02 earned-run average, and reliever Carlos Marmol, who yielded the Dodgers' only extra-base hit -- an eighth-inning double by Juan Pier...
