Dodgers expected to recall LaRoche from Triple-A
2008-06-10 13:35:00 Andy LaRoche is expected to be called up from triple-A Las Vegas for the Dodgers' game in San Diego today, replacing rookie shortstop Chin-lung Hu, who was optioned to triple-A Las Vegas on Monday. LaRoche was competing with Nomar Garciaparra to be the Dodgers' starting third baseman in spring training but suffered a torn ligament in his right thumb requiring surgery. He was reinstated from the disabled list May 3, but the emergence of rookie third baseman Blake DeWitt blocked his path to the majors.LaRoche, who was hitting .267 with five home runs and 26 runs batted in in 37 games at triple-A, played at first and second base in recent weeks to increase the ways he could be useful to the big-league club. Manager Joe Torre said last week that when LaRoche was called up, he would be used as a backup at first and third.

Game Report: Chicago Cubs vs. Los Angeles Dodgers
2008-06-09 18:30:00 In a game that started with some early thunder, the fireworks were put out relatively early. Experieced is gained slowly as Dodgers are finding out
2008-06-09 13:53:00 The talk turned to potential versus performance, to knowing when players labeled young by the calendar or by inexperience are held to the same standard as their elders. "They're just about there," Dodgers General Manager Ned Colletti said of the team's core of youngsters. "They're getting to the point where with their experience you should start to see more than less, not less than more."Taking that a step further, the Dodgers should be winning more than less, and they're not. Their 3-1 loss to the Cubs on Sunday left them with a split of their four-game series and without a handle on where they're headed according to Los Angeles Times columnist Helene Elliott. They thought they could build on winning the two middle games but were clueless at the plate in being held to four hits Sunday by Cubs starter Jason Marquis, who began the game with a 5.02 earned-run average, and reliever Carlos Marmol, who yielded the Dodgers' only extra-base hit -- an eighth-inning double by Juan Pier...

Dodgers' Kemp will appeal four-game suspension
2008-06-06 14:38:00 Matt Kemp appealed a four-game suspension he received from the commissioner's office Thursday, making him eligible to be in the Los Angeles Dodgers' lineup until the case is resolved. He started in center field Thursday night. Kemp was suspended and fined an undisclosed amount for his altercation with Colorado Rockies catcher Yorvit Torrealba on Tuesday night. Kemp drew a suspension that was one day longer than Torrealba's, as Bob Watson, baseball's vice president of on-field operations, blamed him for "fighting and inciting the bench-clearing incident," in a statement released by baseball. "I guess I feel it was as much his fault as it was my fault," Kemp said. "I don't feel I should get more. That's why I'm appealing."The appeal was filed by Kemp's agent, Dave Stewart, through the players' union. If Kemp and the commissioner's office fail to agree on a penalty, a hearing will be held to settle the case. The case would be heard by John McHale Jr., baseball's executi...

Game Thread; Cubs at Dodgers, 10:10 EDT/9:10 CT: I Love L.A.!
2008-06-06 00:00:00 Let's hope the Dodgers don't have home umps like this tonight. Well, not really. I lived there (Hermosa Beach) for three years as a child, and all I remember was smog and lots of traffic. (And yes, I know the above clip features the Angels, not the Dodgers, but it's still funny as hell. Especially the third strike call. Frank Drebin will forever be the man.) Anyway, after the Padres decided to finally win a game (bastards!), the Cubs make the in-state trek to the City of Angels, hoping to start a whole new winning streak. The awesomeness that is Ryan Dempster hits the mound tonight against Chad Billingsley in a rematch of a game May 26, which the Cubs won 3-1. Both pitchers did pretty well in that game, Billingsley struck out seven in the loss. A replay of the final would be OK by me, especially since the Cards already won the first game of their doubleheader today. Chat room link will be up later, and if you haven't yet, make sure to check flyball's sidebar diary on today's...
Dodgers' Kershaw will get it ... eventually
2008-06-05 13:15:00 Trumpets and hype heralded the arrival of the pride of the Dodgers' farm system. He would be the savior, every fifth day. All hail. Three starts and no victories isn't quite what the trumpets and hype promised. We're talking about Clayton Kershaw, yes, but we're also talking about Chad Billingsley according to the Los Angeles Times. Billingsley was Kershaw in 2006, minus the YouTube curveball: Great stuff, uneven command, too many pitches in too few innings. Billingsley got it, in time. Kershaw will get it, too, but not in time to start the All-Star game, perhaps not even in time to hang around the major leagues when Jason Schmidt comes back. Kershaw has a good arm, and a good head on his shoulders too. He knows better than to puff himself up with Baseball America clippings, and with the fans who read them and lionize him."I don't put a lot of credibility in that," Kershaw said. "It's great to be liked here, but first I've got to prove myself."

Odds and Ends: Lane, Dodgers, Huntington
2008-06-02 12:50:00 A collection of links to browse on this fine Monday. Jason Lane can exercise an out clause if he's not promoted to the bigs today. The 31 year-old outfielder is hitting .248/.340/.485 with 11 home runs in 202 Triple A at-bats. The Dodgers hope to acquire a veteran utility infielder as an insurance policy for Rafael Furcal. Any suggestions? The Hardball Times' Mike Lee did an enjoyable interview with Pirates GM Neal Huntington. I have a feeling we'll get a better grasp on Huntington's trading abilities within the next few months. CBSSports.com added Danny Knobler to their team. He's always been a good source for inside info on the Tigers. RotoAuthority has waiver wire advice at every position.
