A Bit About Colors and Patterns in German Shepherd Dogs
2008-09-10 10:22:00
Well, don't be scared... this is one of the toughest chapter. I have been consulting a varried sources since years. Today I just felt like I should write on the colors and patterns in GSDs. Many a times I've been hit by querries, as to whether there is only these colors in GSDs that we usually find in localities and dog shows. Nah.... a lot more are there that are not seen in general dog shows, nor in our localities. Some of the pigments have been declared to be conformation fault; some are really rare genes. But, hey... I'm not a scientist, nor do I understand the magic of gene to the fullest extent. Nor again have I come across all these colors. But I can show you some pics of really awesome pigments and patterns that I've collected while exploring the web randomly. I started gathering info about the colours and patterns in GSDs and related pictures in the year 2003 or so, when my CIZAR (pronounced as 'Scissor') was just a li'l boy. When we think of GSDs, the image that r...

Did You Know that Lobsters, Birds, Cats and Dogs Can Do Math?
2008-09-05 15:35:00
Math is, unfortunately, one of the least liked subjects in school. For many children, it is just a series of painful memorization of tables, lots of tedious calculations and nothing much in the way of being interesting. if you want your youngster, or yourself, to see math from a new and somewhat amazing perspective, get hold of the book by Kevlin Devin titled The Math Instinct: Why You're a Mathematical Genius. http://www.amazon.com/Math-Inst-inct-Mathematical-Genius-Lobste-rs/dp/1560256729

Dealing With Incontinence In Older Or Infirm Dogs
2008-08-25 07:44:00
By Jill TaylorWith better veterinary care and more knowledge in dietary and exercise needs, our pet dogs are living longer lives. In most cases this is an excellent upward trend. But we must also remember, that like us humans, the older the body, the less control over certain aspects.Bladder control in older or ill dogs can become a serious issue for your carpets and flooring. There are a few solutions to keep your home neat, but first the cause must be determined. If your dog is suddenly urinating in the house, the problem may not be old age. First: establish whether there have been any major changes or upsets in the dog's life. Anything from a new pet, to new baby, to a nasty next door dog may cause your dog to "forget" that he is not outside. Second: take your dog to the vet for a check up. Your vet can determine whether or not there is a medical issue causing the problem. Third: try to watch your dog. Is he signalling to go out and you're not catching it? Does he/she seem anxi...
Upton dogs it, but Rays get win
2008-08-19 09:12:00
B.J. Upton slipped away from Tropicana Field without speaking to reporters, leaving others to answer questions about another baserunning gaffe that overshadowed a big Tampa Bay victory. The first-place Rays beat the Los Angeles Angels 6-4 Monday night, but the postgame buzz was more about Upton getting caught jogging on the bases again instead of the ...

Dogs, Drugs and Deluded Authority
2008-07-02 20:45:00
Dogs in schools brings dogs into disrepute. There is legitimate reason to have grave concerns regarding this practice. Every note in circulation carries residues of cocaine and where cannabis is so widely available even to adults it is all to easy to detect in almost any scenario especially at the near molecular trace levels a well trained dog can detect. This leads to false positives where the consequences, especially amongst peers, let alone determined authority eager to justify its 'protectionist' role. Drug Dogs in schools is a dangerous social practice in which the unintended harms are rarely quantified. It portrays 'students' as being under suspicion where there should be none, and sends the message to youth that "all their peers are doing it" when this is a false and misleading impression. Of course, authority is reluctant to acknowledge that they are [ever] part of the problem.I applaud the insight given the comment "how they will handle the pastoral and press issues sho...
Sunday Sonnets
2008-06-21 19:30:00
In an effort to stimulate stagnating brain cells and hopefully spawn some creativity, I am working on a little thing I think I shall call SUNDAY SONNETS.  Essentially, Sunday Sonnets will be a brief collection, quite random, of events or happenings around here in a loose verse form.  And no, I will not adhere to the truest definition of a sonnet as being a verse or song of 14 lines of iambic pentameter.  I'm not a poet--hell, I'm not even a writer--but then again you already know that, don't you.  My initial offering, though not labeled as such, would have to be last week's "That'll Teach Em".This week's Sonnet addresses the ever dwindling rodent population around Casa de Ed.  For discussion purposes let's just assume that rabbits are rodents, OK?  I'm a dad not a zoologist.  Though zoo keeper would not be too far from an apt job description.RODENTS BEWARE Rodents, beware.Though extremely cute and cuddly, your safetyCan not be as...

Horses, Dogs and Cats Cloning
2008-06-10 23:31:00
I have an old dog FIDO who I am truly devoted to who is also devoted to me and at 15 years old I consider each new year we are lucky enough to still have him with us is a bonus. While doing some research for my other site I came across a news article about Horse and Donkey Cloning , and on further research found it would even be possible to clone FIDO.Now this got me thinking would it be right to clone FIDO or when it is his time allow his time to pass and remember him for the great companion he has been. The article about horse cloning is here BBC Article First Horse Cloning back from 2003 which covers cloning a very pretty Haflinger Prometea in Italy and a Mule in Idaho. Now the interesting addition to the story is just this year Prometea has given birth to a colt Pegaso, story here Prometea Has A ColtOf course because these things cost money and because of the money in Horse Racing most of the discussions are with regard to Horse Racing , but it does raise a number of other questio...

Really funny jokes-Guide dogs
2008-06-09 09:06:00
A man is walking his dog in a park when he meets another man, also walking his dog. They say hello and start to talk about their dogs. One has a chihuahua and the other a doberman. They decide to rest for coffee and they walk into a local cafe. Upon seeing a 'no animals allowed' sign, the man with the doberman says"Don't worry, put on these dark glasses. We'll pretend these are our guide dogs".So the men do this and go into the cafe. When the waiter comes over, he says to the man with the doberman "I'm sorry sir, but we do not allow animals in here. You'll have to take that dog outside.""But this is my guide dog," says the man."A doberman! A doberman isn't a guide dog," says the waiter."Actually, a doberman is particularly suited to being a guide dog nowadays. They provide lots of security and they are very well mannered.""Oh, alright then," says the waiter, and then he notices the other dog. "Excuse me sir, but you can't have that dog in here," he says to the other man."Oh y...

Cruciate Ligaments in Dogs
2008-06-06 02:49:00
Today's post takes a personal note. Cruciate Ligaments injuries in dogs is quite common. And one of the Big Paw Designs dogs has now experienced it. Big George, our Great Pyrenees mix goes into surgery tomorrow to repair his knee. This injury is the equivalent to ACL in humans. It often goes undiagnosed or misdiagnosed as a hip issue - so be vigilant in documenting your pet's behavior to give tips to your vet for diagnosis. After doing some research, this is a very common issue with dogs. Especially hunting dogs and larger dogs. In addition, dogs who are middle aged (5-7) seem to be impacted. It is important, especially in larger breed dogs, that they not be overweight. However, some of the cause may be genetic - just based on their body structure. Mr. George is not overweight - and perhaps a bit underweight - we wanted to avoid any unnecessary hip issues in large breed dogs with him. So part of it in his case is probably a combination of age, the angle of his legs, and...

New Rapidshare CAPTCHA - Playing Cats n Dogs, anyone?
2008-06-03 18:53:00
All right.. The new look rapidshare is alive and kickng .. But I liked the old layout better. The new CAPTCHA system is a real pain in the ass.. It generates a random code with twisted letters and numbers. But wait.. There are little kittens and dogs (apparently) attached to each of the letters. You have to enter the ones with the ‘cats’ alone and NOT the dogs in order to get through. And finding which one’s a cat and which is the dog is a real pain in the ass. Whoa! Apparently, the P has a DOG and NOT a CAT .. So, the correct code would be 6BLC and nothing else. Hey! That was easy, right ? CAPTCHA these days are becoming more of a mental challenge to genuine users, making it so difficult to get past them. Lets hope rapidshare changes their new CAPTCHA system  ASAP.

Puppy Food For Large/Giant Breed Dogs
2008-06-02 19:28:00
Many companies have, or are coming out with, higher protein, grain free foods.  While these can be wonderful for the full grown dog, not all of them are appropriate for puppies under one year of age. It is not the high protein that is a concern but most of these foods are too high in calcium for growing pups. Some people and breeders are still skeptical about feeding pups higher protein.  I disagree with this as I have seen pups raised on high protein foods and they are doing great.  I correspond with breeders feeding high protein grain free food to weaned pups and plan on doing so with my next litter.    Here is a link for your review: http://www.b-naturals.com/newsl-etter/puppy-protein/ Now for the calcium:  Natures Variety Instinct is what my girls eat and do great on.  However with calcium at 2.49% it is too high for growing pups under one year of age. EVO is another excellent grain free food but at 3.0% calcium it is also too high. The best one I have seen on the marke...
