2007-12-25 03:00:00 Donald Bryd - Best Of Donald Byrd [1992]A solid record for anyone, but a must-have for anyone intereted in 70s-era funk-toned jazz.Most jazz compilations are rife with tracks that most people who might even be hip to the artist haven't heard. Not a Donald Byrd record: you may not have known some of these tracks were his during the very funky 70s, but this man was spearheading the popularity of fusion with bomb track after bomb track. He's oft-sampled by hip-hop and you see why immediately: he nailed jazz and funk before acid jazz even existed.Donald Byrd - Ethiopian Knights [1971]Although the musicians do improvise, their main objective is to keep the grooves pumping, using their solos more to create texture than harmonic complexity.
