2008-04-18 07:36:00
Miami, Florida. All-Star starting pitcher Dontrelle Willis of the Detroit Tigers has settled his criminal DUI charge resulting from an arrest back in December of 2006. This incident occurred when Dontrelle was pitching for the Florida Marlins. Dontrelle agreed to plea guilty to Reckless Driving pursuant to the prosecutors amending the original charge of DUI to the lesser charge. The court imposed the following sanctions against Dontrelle for the Reckless Driving conviction: 6 months probation Complete 50 hours of community service Pay $761.00 in fines and fees The plea agreement also prevented a license suspension. Detroit Tigers left-hander Dontrelle Willis was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday after an MRI confirmed that he has a hyperextended right knee. Dontrelle Willis figured the worst when his knee gave way and he fell on a damp mound. And why not? It’s been that kind of bad season for the Detroit Tigers. “I thought initially I blew it out, but that’s not the case,” he said. “I’m able to put pressure on it now. As ...

Dontrelle Willis was nearly unhittable. Unfortunately for the Detroit Tigers, the White Sox found other ways to get on base against him. The Detroit Tigers never saw the Dontrelle Willis they were eager to see all spring. For the Pittsburgh Pirates, it was a much different story. They saw the Zach Duke of 2005. 2008-03-24 02:05:00
The Detroit Tigers’ Dontrelle Willis prepares for life after baseball by interviewing Ryan Howard of the Philadelphia Phillies and David Wright of the New York Mets. The question that Willis wants answered to most is “Who’s the toughest pitcher you’ve faced?” and he’s begging for the answer to be him. Ryan Howard took the diplomatic way out by saying the D-Train is one of the best pitchers in the game but David Wright didn’t hold back. Dontrelle: Who’s one of the toughest pitchers you’ve faced in the league man and why? David: I would say you but I own you. Classic. For the record Wright is 14-39 (.359) with 1 hr and 8 rbi against Willis. Dontrelle cracked back by saying it’s gonna be Tigers-Phillies in the World Series, but it was too late. Wright got him again. Tags: Dontrelle Willis, Ryan Howard, David Wright, Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets, video, youtube, utube Share/Email This

Dontrelle Willis has agreed to a three-year contract with the Tigers. The deal is worth $29 million. He can make an additional $1.5 million in award bonuses. “The Tigers were already good without me, but hopefully I can play a small part in putting the club over the hump to win another championship,” he said.

Tigers, Willis Talking Extension
2007-12-19 20:57:00
The Tigers have begun talks with Dontrelle Willis' agent on a three or four-year extension, according to Jon Paul Morosi.  Morosi is thinking around $25-30MM.  It would be Willis' first multiyear contract. Morosi notes that both Willis and Nate Robertson are free agents after the 2009 season, and Kenny Rogers might be done after '08.  Robertson also wants to talk extension. Jeremy Bonderman is signed through 2010.  He'll team with Justin Verlander and Rick Porcello to form the team's pitching nucleus. showad();
Willis Wants Extension With Tigers
2007-12-12 16:14:00
Now that he's on a club with the financial resources for it, Dontrelle Willis would like to talk contract extension.  Willis is only 26 in January. The model would apparently be Jeremy Bonderman's four-year, $38MM deal.  That deal was signed two years prior to Bonderman being eligible for free agency, as Willis is now.  Add a little inflation and maybe it's 4/40 or 4/42 for Willis.  A few years from now that might be the going rate for a guy with a high-4's ERA who can eat 200 innings.  So even if Willis doesn't bounce back the extension could be reasonable.  If he does, it's a bargain. showad();
Unfair Expectations
2007-12-10 00:16:00
Detroit News columnist Jerry Green (who's old enough to use the word "balderdash" without blushing) felt he had to let us know that "perfection [is] now demanded of new-look Tigers." It's unclear who, exactly, is demanding this flawless performance, other than Green himself.The Tigers must win the World Series next October -- or bust. A division title would not be satisfactory. Not any more. Another American League pennant, the same as the Tigers unexpectedly won in 2006, would be insufficient. The Tigers have to win the pennant plus the World Series next season or the monster trade of the other day becomes a flop.The Tigers didn't make the playoffs last year. One trade later, they have to win the World Series or be considered a disgrace? I mean sure, they picked up a great player, but they also finished 8 games behind the Indians last year, and 6 games behind the Yankees in the Wild Card. This trade certainly improves them in the short term (as does the acquisition of Edgar Rent...
Dontrelle For Josh Hamilton Was Discussed
2007-12-07 18:27:00
MLB.com's Joe Frisaro posted a new column last night full of good Marlins hot stove chatter. The most interesting note is that the Marlins talked to the Reds about swapping Dontrelle Willis for Josh Hamilton, prior to the blockbuster with Detroit.  With Miguel Cabrera, the White Sox and Rangers were involved during the Meetings before the Tigers jumped in.  The Rangers backed out when they couldn't get an extension window for Cabrera.  The Tigers wanted the same but obviously it wasn't the dealbreaker.  The Angels, Dodgers, and Giants were involved before the Meetings, with the Giants offering Noah Lowry. Frisaro says there are "strong indications the Marlins will sign Jorge Cantu.  He'll be in the mix at third base. The Fish are offering the Phils Scott Nestor for Wes Helms, who'd also compete at the hot corner. The Mets have some interest in Alfredo Amezaga, though the Marlins are inclined to keep him. Miguel Olivo will be released soon, so thro...

Willis/Pudge Spinoff To Mets?
2007-12-06 04:22:00
UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 9:21pm: Danny Knobler says the Tigers did briefly consider a three-way scenario that sent Willis and Pudge to the Mets.  That permutation was dismissed before anything went public and won't be revisited. FROM 12-5-07 at 6:08pm: According to Sweeny Murti via MetsBlog, the Tigers have looked into the idea of spinning Dontrelle Willis off to the Mets.  I'm sure this would thrill the Marlins, who didn't want to trade within the division.  No offer has been made, but it's been discussed.  The part that doesn't make sense is the inclusion of Ivan Rodriguez to the Mets as a salary dump.  The Tigers, after all, chose to exercise that $13MM option on Pudge. showad();

Big Trade: Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis to Detroit for Prospects?
2007-12-05 01:18:00
It looks like the Detroit Tigers have made the first blockbuster trade of the Winter Meetings. Well, they lost the division to the Indians, and now they have made a move that potentially may get them back into the playoffs again in 2008.The Florida Marlins and Detroit Tigers have agreed in principle on a trade that will send Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis to Detroit for key prospects, sources told ESPN's Peter Gammons.The Tigers would send outfielder Cameron Maybin, pitcher Andrew Miller, catcher Mike Rabelo and three other minor league pitchers to the Marlins.and...6:20 p.m., from Peter Gammons? Doh! Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis Traded!
2007-12-05 01:16:00
Just hours after Ken Rosenthal broke the news that the Florida Marlins and the Detroit Tigers were engaged in trade discussions revolving around Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis going to Detroit for Andrew Miller and Cameron Maybin, the trade occurs.  In addition to Miller and Maybin, the Tigers are getting catcher Mike Rubello and three minor league pitchers. While this appears to be much less than what the Angels had to pay for Cabrera alone, the names of the minor league pitchers may change that.  I have a hard time believing it unless one of those players is a PTBNL who will be named one year after he signed his first professional contract.  That PTBNL would be Mike Porcello. That doubt aside, is this how the Marlins addressed their catching situation?  They use their two biggest trading chips to get Mike Rubello?  I wonder if the team decided it could live with another year of Miguel Olivo. I am curious now whether this trade makes the Angels serious...
Tigers Inquire About Willis
2007-11-11 03:56:00
Scott Boras and Kenny Rogers threw a wrench in the Tigers' plans by suggesting The Gambler will test the open market.  It's already been noted that the Tigers have expressed interest in Carlos Silva as a fallback. Also on the radar: Dontrelle Willis.  Dave Dombrowski recently called the Marlins to inquire.  Dombrowski, of course, previously worked for the Fish.  Jon Paul Morosi notes that the Tigers asked about Willis two years ago as well.  I imagine the asking price was much higher then.  With Jair Jurrjens and Gorkys Hernandez now with the Braves, it may be hard to find a match anyway. The vibe seems to be that the Marlins would prefer to trade Miguel Cabrera and keep Willis.    showad();
Contract Window For Miguel Cabrera?
2007-11-09 21:05:00
MLB.com's Joe Frisaro says the Miguel Cabrera trade talks are heating up.  As you know, Cabrera is under team control for the 2008 and 2009 seasons.  He might become more enticing if the acquiring team can talk to his agent prior to completion of a trade, with a long-term contract in mind.  As far as I can tell Cabrera is represented by Arn Tellem and Fernando Cuza currently. Frisaro says the Angels and Dodgers are in the lead for Cabrera.  The Yankees, White Sox, Indians, and Tigers are also in the mix.  However this Paul Hoynes article seems to indicate the Indians are fading on Cabrera.  And I think it's questionable whether the White Sox have the goods.  Frisaro doesn't include the Red Sox, which jives with Michael Silverman's info today.  Peter Gammons says the Red Sox could get Hank Blalock in a Coco Crisp deal but aren't ready to do that right now. It's known that the Marlins want Howie Kendrick from the Angels; Ken Rosenthal firs...
Miguel Cabrera Trade Rumors
2007-11-08 20:36:00
For up for auction: two years of Miguel Cabrera.  Who's going to place a bid?  The latest buzz from Joe Capozzi is that the Dodgers, Angels, Giants, Yankees, Red Sox, and White Sox are all after him.  A deal could happen at the Winter Meetings from December 3-6.  The needs for the Marlins are starting pitching, third base, catcher, and center field.  They want three players. Dodgers: Capozzi's source says they're "making a big push" for Cabrera, after calling about him last summer.  This could even involve a package deal with Dontrelle Willis.  The names being thrown around: Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier, Andy LaRoche, Chad Billingsley, Clayton Kershaw, Scott Elbert, and Jonathan Meloan.  I can't see the Dodgers trading Billingsley; he's integral to the 2008 team.  Dodgers side note: Bill Shaikin names Kosuke Fukudome as someone the Dodgers are monitoring. Angels: Capozzi says Cabrera could be the Angels' alternative if they fai...
Bad Advice
2007-11-07 18:09:00
Mike Berardino of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel knows just what the Marlins should do if they can only retain half of the Miguel Cabrera/Dontrelle Willis duo:Finally, there's the stark difference between finding another slugger and replacing a legitimate ace. The first is comparatively easy, while the second is nearly "impossible," to use J.P. Ricciardi's word. "You try to get pitching ?from anybody," said Ricciardi, the Blue Jays' GM. "You talk to anyone, it's pitching, pitching, pitching, pitching. It becomes gold after a while." That's why the Marlins should hold onto Willis as long as they possibly can, even if it means moving Cabrera now.This would be true, if Dontrelle Willis were anything even close to a "legitimate ace." This is not the case; in fact, he's no longer even league-average. Willis posted an 83 ERA+ in 2007, after finishing with a 112 ERA+ in 2006, both numbers well below his career-high 151 ERA+ in 2005. He certainly could reverse this decline, (that 151 ...

Dontrelle Willis To Stay?
2007-10-22 17:03:00
Take this for what it's worth.  Dontrelle Willis' agent, Matt Sosnick, ran into former Marlins GM Larry Beinfest in the supermarket recently.  Beinfest basically said that the Marlins plan on Willis remaining with the team, so the two sides should plan to discuss a contract as usual.  For Sosnick that means late November talks. Willis will earn more than $7MM next year, which will probably comprise a fifth or so of the team's payroll.  Most likely new Marlins GM Michael Hill will listen to offers on both Willis and Cabrera and trade one of them.
The "Spoiler" Mentality
2007-10-02 07:59:00
As the end of every regular season nears, each non-contending team seems to regain its sense of purpose. Many of them have already been mathematically eliminated, but that nagging issue doesn't seem to cast a damper on their renewed enthusiasm. This enlivened commitment to victory has nothing to do with an improvement in their own playoff fortunes; in fact, it has everything to do with the opportunity to hurt the chances of others. I've always found this motivation somewhat baffling.It's not just the fact that taking pleasure in the failures of others isn't something which people generally boast about, or even admit. I mean, we've all felt that way at one point or another, so I won't pretend that the "spoiler" teams are any more morally bankrupt than the average person. "Misery loves company" is an old saying, after all. But how many of us go to work each day with the intention to make others miserable?I suppose that much much of the "spoiler" phenomenon stems from the fact th...
Rumors and Questions
2007-09-29 00:12:00
If Cubs make the playoffs, they will be glad not to see the Marlins in the postseason.  After last night's defeat, the Cubs haven't beaten the Fish since April... of 2006. Lots of buzz today, so here are some Rumors and Questions on the day: Florida Marlins Fans, it may be disheartening for you, both of you, to know that David Hyde (with some help from Bill Murray) believes as though either Miguel Cabrera or Dontrelle Willis will indeed be dealt this offseason.  Tim crunched the numbers and thinks they should shed Willis' contract.  If I had to choose, I'd agree with Mr. Hyde (not Dr. Jekyll) and wave goodbye to Miggy before the D-Train rolls out.  Cabrera is indisputably elite and could net a Hanley Ramirez or two.  Meanwhile, Dontrelle's value is at an all time low.  Who would you deal? Speaking of former Marlins, Buster Olney thinks the Tigers will re-sign Todd Jones.  When asked who will close for the Tigers next year, Manager Jim Leyland ...
Willis Wouldn't Mind Playing In Philly
2007-09-11 16:04:00
Not exactly a rumor, but worth a mention.  This type of thing is common when teams meet up for a series.  We saw it with Aaron Rowand when the White Sox played the Phillies this year. Though the Phillies tattooed Dontrelle Willis Sunday night, Willis's friend Jimmy Rollins and teammate Brett Myers were discussing how they'd love to see him in a Phillies uniform.  Rollins suggested that Willis may be unmotivated in Florida.  He also added that he's asked Dontrelle and confirmed that the pitcher would not mind playing for Philadelphia.  Of course, Willis doesn't have any say in it. I've heard estimates anywhere from $7-9MM for Willis's arbitration reward this winter.  He made $6.45MM in '07.  The Fish had a $30MM payroll on Opening Day of this year, and will owe Miguel Cabrera several million more in 2008.  So Willis should account for 20-25% of the payroll. Will the Marlins pay up for one more year and hope Willis rebuilds his value?&nbs...
Ageless Maddux, Sleepy Eyes Harang, and Hermida?s Summer
2007-08-30 07:49:00
I found this interesting, regarding the ageless Greg Maddux: ?I haven’t felt this good in my life,? Maddux said yesterday. ?Maybe when I was in high school.? Early this season, Maddux agreed to allow head trainer Todd Hutcheson and assistant Paul Navarro to work on his pitching arm several days per week. The 41-year-old said he feels ?a lot better? than in other Augusts and cracked: ?I wish I felt like this when I was good and could put it to use.? Maddux said the arm maintenance is allowing him to recover from games faster, which is enabling him to throw more in his bullpen sessions, yielding better feel when he pitches. The right-hander hasn’t allowed a walk in his past 35 innings, a span of five starts. Maddux is rather quietly stringing together a very valuable fantasy season, allowing only 1.17 walks every nine innings, which is even better than his historically pinpointing career numbers (1.82). He’s got 10 wins and a 3.90 ERA, and is enjoying his best seaso...
Obsession
2007-08-30 03:56:00
This is my busiest time of year, but has nothing to do with work or social activities. I am currently spending any free time with fantasy sports. My first of four fantasy football league drafts took place last night (Gobo has a brief recap), and I?m gearing up for the final month of the fantasy baseball league season for my two leagues. While four fantasy football leagues are probably a bit excessive, I only truly care about two of them. Actually, I take that back; I can be competitive so I care about all four, but I?m only really focusing on two of the four. As for baseball, I?m currently in third place out of twelve teams in both leagues. It does not look promising for a championship in either league. Have I mentioned that I hate Dontrelle Willis?Over the past few days, I also spent time researching television shows for the upcoming season for the Alison LaPlaca Open TV Death Pool. I?ve selected my ten shows, which I will share here soon. As a reminder, the deadline to si...
Dontrelle Willis May Be Shopped Come Winter
2007-08-13 23:55:00
According to the Miami Herald, the Marlins may shop D-Train in the offseason instead of paying him at least $7 million in arbitration.  There has been rumors for a long time that the Marlins may eventually trade this guy.  However, the Marlins have also said they want to build the team around him and Miguel Cabrera.  There are plenty of young stars in their system that they will have to pay, like SS Hanley Ramirez.  Willis has stuggled at times of late, so this may be the time to trade him.  The Marlins will probably want pitching, a lot of pitching, in return. For more rumors visit FOXSPORTS Any time D-Train's name comes up, the Mets are involved.  I would love to see him in a Met uniform, despite his recent troubles.  The Mets have many old pitchers and Pelfrey has struggled.  Willis's energy would be great for this team and he'd be so exciting to watch at Shea.  If the Mets can get a deal done, they should.  Go get em, Oma...

Long Shot: Willis Back To Cubs?
2007-07-30 07:39:00
Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus has an interesting note in today's Rumor Mill: "The Cubs also still covet Dontrelle Willis as "the one that got away" and--despite his not being on the market--Willis is one player the Cubs could get if Larry Beinfest suddenly changes his mind about that. Adding Felix Pie to Jacque Jones and Donald Veal would get it done, while not adding to the Cubs payroll." Jim Hendry already tried to patch up one of the all-time classic Cub mistakes by signing Greg Maddux before the 2004 season.  At least that departure didn't happen under Hendry's watch.  Back in March of 2002, Hendry traded Ryan Jorgensen, Jose Cueto, Julian Tavarez, and Willis to the Marlins for Matt Clement and Antonio Alfonseca.  Where are they now? Jorgensen, a catcher, had a four-game cup of coffee for the Fish in '05, and now toils for the Reds' Triple A team. Cueto, a pitcher, never made it past Double A and finished off his career back in the ...
Mariners Watching Starters
2007-07-26 17:04:00
UPDATE: Hickey writes that the Mariners have also scouted Kyle Lohse, Matt Morris, Jason Johnson (thought he went to Japan), and Octavio Dotel.  However, a deal seems unlikely because none of those players are worth top Mariner prospects. According to Jim Hickey of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the Mariners have been scouting all kinds of available and not-so-available starters lately. The Mariners have been scouting the White Sox "religiously" lately.  If they saw Javier Vazquez beat the Tigers on Tuesday, they came away impressed.  (However, Vazquez can and probably would veto a trade to the AL or NL West).  They were on hand to watch Jose Contreras tonight; the Tigers had batting practice with him and his ERA is up to 6.22.  Did you hear that?  That was the sound of Contreras' remaining ounce of trade value evaporating. As you know, the Ms watched Dontrelle Willis on Monday.  Compared to Contreras, Willis pitched well - four earned ...
Rosenthal's Latest Video: A-Rod, Willis
2007-07-14 19:04:00
There's a new video up with Ken Rosenthal contributing.  Let's see what the man had to say this time: According to Rosenthal, Alex Rodriguez will opt out, and he will get $30MM a year.  The coverage of this story is just beginning, unfortunately. The Marlins have been telling teams they won't move Dontrelle Willis; they think they're still in contention.  The Fish are 7.5 out in the NL East and 8 out for the Wild Card.  The simulations I've seen give the Marlins a 1-3% chance at making the playoffs.  Would Willis command a stronger package of prospects if dealt now or during the offseason?  Dave George thinks his stock will continue to fall, and he needs a change of scenery (Willis heard boos at home for maybe the first time last night).  However, Rosenthal's contention is supported by Juan C. Rodriguez - apparently, only one scout was at Willis's start last night (a Royals guy who lives in Florida anyway).

Trade Rumors - Mark Teixeira, Jermaine Dye, Dontrelle Willis

With White Sox pitcher Mark Buerhle and the Mariners' outfielder Ichiro Suzuki removed from the trade rumor market thanks to the contract extensions both signed with their respective teams, the rumors will turn to other players just as water flows downhill.  With Rangers 1B Mark Teixeira dues to return at week's end, he is a natural fit as his team stinks, and he is represented by Superagent Scott Boras. The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports the Braves are amongst the teams interested in acquiring Teixeira and speculates the team would have to include C/1B Jarrod Saltalamacchia in any deal.  Given Rangers' GM Jon Daniels lack of trading success, Saltalamacchia offers some public relations cover as he is the best known of the Braves prospects.  However, the Rangers have other needs that could be addressed by the Braves without including Salty.  Amongst them would be AA OF Brandon Jones, AA SP Matt Harrison, current major league pitchers Kyle Davies and Jo Jo...
Rosenthal's Latest: Willis, Dunn, Griffey
2007-07-09 21:11:00
Ken Rosenthal has a new column up today.  Not too much brand new material but worth discussing nonetheless. Rosenthal opines that Dontrelle Willis is currently at his peak value.  Mark Buehrle is off the market.  Dontrelle is seemingly healthy and under control through 2009.  There was a scare, though, when Willis had a sore forearm in June.  Rosenthal points out that despite mediocre stats the past couple of seasons, Willis still has an ace aura about him.  That's probably because of his near-Cy Young in '05 and the way he took the league by storm in '03.  The Mets, Mariners, Dodgers, Red Sox, Rockies, and Diamondbacks could all be interested in the Marlins start shopping Willis.  Larry Beinfest seems to be leaning against it though. The Padres may still consider trading for Adam Dunn, but will see how Milton Bradley plays over the next few weeks first.  The Reds and Padres aren't a great match, as the Padres don't have many big-nam...

Stark's Latest
2007-05-18 16:36:00
Jayson Stark posted a new Rumblings and Grumblings column over at ESPN; it's definitely worth a read.  A summary of his trade rumors: GMs calling the Marlins have noticed that the team seems a little more open to trading Dontrelle Willis this year. Miguel Cabrera doesn't appear to be under discussion.  If the Marlins are out of the race in mid-July and a team ponies up with three legimate young regulars, they might be able to pry him away.  The D'Backs or Dodgers could probably pull this off without damaging their current group too much. Stark says the D-Rays are considering promoting both Evan Longoria and Reid Brignac before the trading deadline, filling out the left side of their infield.  Someone would have to be pushed out; maybe B.J. Upton to center, Akinori Iwamura to second, and Rocco Baldelli to another team.  Stark reminds us of past interest by the Red Sox.  And don't forget all the interest from Atlanta in December.    The Rich...
