Cooking Up The Dough
2008-08-13 03:36:00 Ok, I am just going to warn you right up front that this post will mention Rachael Ray, possibly several times. With that being said, feel free to click elsewhere. No, better yet, head down there on the right and check out my archived posts. Alrighty, for the two or three of you still left, thanks for sticking around. I?ll try to make it worth your time, even though you aren?t out any money, which really lowers the bar for me. However, I will try to excel for you. Or better yet, I will actually get to the point of this post before you too navigate to someplace else. Oh hey, The Carpenters? ?For All We Know? just came on the ole Ipod. What a peaceful song that is. I was reading on Forbes.com recently about the top earning celebrity chefs. (Warning: here comes my first Rachael Ray mention) Would you believe that Rachael Ray is the top celebrity chef? I think her total was like 16 million a year. That even beat out Wolfgang Puck, who when he found out that Rachael (oops, for...

Go Green and Save Some Dough
2008-05-15 03:15:00 Although you may not think it, but 21% of the green house gas emissions produced in the united states come from everyday household energy usage. By implementing cost efficient energy saving techniques, you can help reduce these emissions while saving money at the same time. <img src="http://www.sellingnorthern-nv.com/images/IgnitionSuite_Ima-ge(1121).jpg"> Improving your homes efficiency Compact fluorescent light bulbs last up to 10 times longer, produce 75 percent less heat, and still produce the same amount of light as an incandescent bulb with only 25 percent as much energy usage. By simply swapping your old lights out for these new ones, you can see a drastic reduction on your monthly energy bills. If you want to take it to the extreme, you can easily make the switch to solar power. Solar panels are getting cheaper to purchase, easier to install, and will last for around 20 years. In addition to cutting your energy bills, the federal gov...

Day Sixty-Three + Day Sixty-Four: Rye Sour Dough
2008-03-05 18:10:00 You may have noticed by now that we have a certain fondness for rye bread in our house. Of course, I’m trying to maintain balance in the various things I make for Project Daily Bread, but there’s no questioning what bread instantly comes to mind when contemplating what to put our deli meats and cheeses on. It’s almost Pavlovian; indeed, the merest mention of rye bread around here can set our mouths to watering.1 Now, I’d like to think it’s obvious that I couldn’t make bread every day for an entire year and completely ignore the sourdough genre. That would be incredibly remiss of me, especially since I do have a sourdough starter that I like to use on occasion. When I first started using it a couple of years ago, I was very excited. I’d never made a sourdough bread before, but had long admired the way they tasted. To my friend and sometime culinary partner-in-crime Katherine, I gave half my first batch of start...

In The Closet and, A Really Good Pizza Dough Recipe
2008-01-25 13:40:00 I'm still a little embarrassed about the little spiel I did earlier about my recent nomination. I sort of stayed away from the blog for little while for fear that my readers had turned on me and thought I had become some sort of sell-out. I don't know why I feel like that but I'm still a little awkward about getting recognition for the blog, it's nice when other bloggers say nice things about me, but when all the appreciation suddenly becomes official, I somehow get all gawky and reluctant.I guess I'm not sure what the appropriate reaction is, I guess gratitude and excitement would seem apparent, although I'm not sure whether I should be all glaringly blatant about it and in the spirit of blogging- share all things with you the reader or whether I should be all rock and roll about the whole thing, just cool and aloof- no skin off my back whether I win or lose.At some points I manage to border on being apathetic about the whole thing but my inner dork just wants to be all giddy...

Amazingly, Joe Only Makes A Little Dough
2007-12-01 00:45:00 By comparison, I should hasten to add?and I haven?t ventured into the world of sports for a little while now, but I?ll do so here (and I may do so again a little later ? we?ll see). After I read here that legendary Penn State football coach Joe Paterno makes $512,000 a year, I thought I would hurl all over the pigskin, as it were. That is until I read this USA Today article from about a year ago that listed salaries for coaches at top-tier schools (the story mentions the at-that-time pending lawsuit over Paterno having to divulge his salary, which he should have had to do anyway as far as I?m concerned, given the fact that Penn State takes public money). The USA Today article tells us that the actual salary of these coaches comprises about 25 percent of their compensation, with endorsements and other income sources making up the remaining amount. And subsequent to that story, this post tells us that?Gary R. Roberts, deputy dean of Tulane University?s law school and director of its spo...
Spillsbury Dough Boy
2007-11-21 18:38:00 The usual suspects out of the political woodwork. Democratic presidential nowhere man Sen. Chris Dodd calling for an investigation. Miss Covert America Valerie Plame blowing her pretty blonde stack. E & P Deadeye Dick Cheney spotted digging a grave at Fort Marcy Park. The "misled" "Scottie" McClellan issues 121 words from an unfinished book rocking Bush's political world that he lied when he spun the one-note-samba to the WH press day after day. That Bush, Rove, and Cheney, Libby had nothing to do with the CIA leak thing. The unwitting McClellan falls on his own sword for those who gave him false info. What a way to get the liberal media vultures tripping over their dicks for McClellen's unfinished book due out in April 08! Politico Slate Scott's 39. His life as he knows it is over. Hope he has a good retirement plan and investments. My take on "Scottie" is that he's a hand-wringing, wussy whining victim. Hate that toxic victim energy. Public Affair Books Jay & The A...

Dead Celebs Still Bring in the Dough
2007-10-31 04:39:00 There's an old story that goes something like this... A guy is wandering in the desert totally starving and dehydrated, when suddenly he comes upon a genie who gives him a simple choice: he can have a zillion dollars or a glass of water. Obviously, he wants the money, but he thinks, "you can't be rich and dead," so he takes the water.Well, that guy better re-think his decision, because, as Forbes' list of the Top-Earning Dead Celebrities makes perfectly clear, you really can be rich and dead.Released on Monday, the list throws out the names and incomes of the 13 legends who have kicked the bucket but keep striking it rich. Topping the list, of course, is none other than the King, Elvis Presley, whose estate generated $49 million in the past year and whose likeness adorns almost as many T-shirts as Che. The King is so big that he's got his own publicly traded company, CKX Entertainment, which owns the rights to just about everything Elvis including his Graceland Mansion/Amusement...

I am so glad that this week is almost over!!! oh...and pizza dough too!
2007-10-19 14:58:00 Wow!!!My oldest daughter was sick for the end part of last week and I fully expected everyone else in the house to end up with it. As it was I was the only one who got even a touch of it (I guess that happens when you are cleaning up after a sicky for most of a full day!) Thank you Dr Vince!!! I credit Dr Vince's vitamin regime to our ability to fight of most things! The beginning of this week went smoothly enough and then along comes Wednesday. Tony was leaving to go out of town for the week and I would be staying home to take care of the girls. As luck would have it my oldest daughter (who had recovered nice and quick from the bug she had) woke up with a hive on her finger. We have been down this route before so I immediately gave her some Benadryl. That will stop any other hives from breaking out on her body. The Benadryl did it's job and she didn't end up with any more, so off we went to school. I dropped them off and spoke to her teacher and let her know that she had a hive a...

Rolling In The Dough!!
2007-10-11 18:28:00 When I was in high school, one of the deacons at church opened a donut shop. I worked for him in the early morning before school during my senior year, and in the summer time before I left for college. When my wife and I married we lived in a town where I grew up. We had been married for five or six years when one night I got a call from the deacon, offering to sell me the donut shop. read more

Bestest Pizza Dough
2007-10-05 06:12:00 This pizza dough is WAY better than the last one I posted. However, it doesn't lend itself to a spur-of-the-moment kind of dinner as the other one does, as this one requires a long, chilled rise - but the long, chilled rise is what makes it far superior to a shorter-rising dough. The recipe is really long, but it's not as complicated as its length might lead you to believe - it’s just that the
Bestest Pizza Dough
2007-10-05 06:12:00 This pizza dough is WAY better than the last one I posted. However, it doesn't lend itself to a spur-of-the-moment kind of dinner as the other one does, as this one requires a long, chilled rise - but the long, chilled rise is what makes it far superior to a shorter-rising dough. The recipe is really long, but it's not as complicated as its length might lead you to believe - it’s just that the directions are very detailed. You can even freeze the dough and use it a later date, but I think it’s best when it is fresh from the fridge. Seriously, this is the best pizza crust I’ve ever eaten, and I've eaten lots of pizza in my years. (I'm from NY, of course I've eaten at least twice my weight in pizza over the course of my life.) The quality of this crust has nothing to do with my prowess in the kitchen and everything to do with the proportions and timing. Bestest Pizza Dough modified and shrunken down from this pizza dough recipe (makes 3 balls of dough, each for a 9-inch...

Ultimate Fight Night 11 UFC Payouts - Cummo Takes in the Dough
2007-09-21 20:24:00 Here are the payouts from the Ultimate Fight Night 11 (UFN 11) show that premiered on Wednesday night. To my surprise, Luke Cummo brought in the biggest pay check at $32,000 for his fight against Crocota. Second runner up was Nate Diaz at $30,000 and finally Thiago Alves at $28,000. Quite honestly I was surprised by these numbers, especially surprised to see Joe Veres get $3,000 to get Knocked the f’ Out By Gray Maynard. Here’s the full break down of the pay outs. Pizza Dough
2007-09-14 17:15:00 I’ve tried tons of pizza dough recipes and this one works the best – it’s simple and produces a perfectly crisp crust. You can use all purpose flour, but bread flour is best. Pizza Dough(makes enough for two 8-9†pizzas) 3/4 cup warm tap water1 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast2 cups bread flour1 teaspoon salt In a small bowl, stir together the water and yeast. Let it stand for a few minutes so that the yeast dissolves. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook, mix together the salt and flour. Add the yeast and water and mix on medium speed for 12-15 minutes, until the dough is soft and elastic. (You can also do this by hand – mix the water and yeast into the dry ingredients with a wooden spoon and stir until the dough forms, then knead on a lightly floured surface for about 10 minutes.) Lightly coat a large bowl with extra virgin olive oil and place the dough in the bowl. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and leave in a warm plac... |
