Sears Oakland Downtown Store To Remain Open In 2012 And Beyond
2012-01-07 17:32:00 Sears, facing a drop in sales, announced last December it was planning to close 100 to 120 stores. The local media assumed Oakland, Ca would be one of them, and so danced over Oakland’s grave. They were wrong. On Friday, and while at the Sears Oakland Eye Center, this blogger learned that Sears would remain (Read More...)

Five Rumored Features of the Downtown Casino
2011-06-01 20:14:00 Chicago is a city with a lot of problems. We're broke, our public school system is a mess, gang violence remains prevalent, and our gas prices and taxes are the highest in the country. But nobody cares about that stuff because there could be a casino on its way to downtown!
Number of homes listed for rent in downtown neighborhoods falls again
2011-05-13 21:31:00 Another Friday brings another low number of downtown homes listed for rent on the MLS. At this time last year, 1,350 condos, townhomes, and single-families in 14 downtown ZIP codes were available; as of this morning, there are 817. Leading the 182 homes listed in the last 7 days is a three-bedroom / three-bath on the 43rd floor of Park Tower, 800 N Michigan Ave. At $21,900, it's the second most expensive rental in the city. The unit features unobstructed views of the lake to the east, stone and hardwood finishes, a master suite with an Italian steam room and huge walk-in shower, a state-of-the-art kitchen, an upscale sound system, and motorized shades. Renters also get access to all...
A video visit to downtown Downers Grove
2011-05-04 18:06:00 We love video tours as a way to visit communities without having to get in the car - especially with current gas prices. The video above takes you on a corporate-toned tour of downtown Downers Grove, but does provide a decent look at what you'll find there. If your checklist for your next move includes finding a suburb with a destination downtown and Metra access to downtown in less than half an hour, add Downers Grove to your list. The Downers Grove Visitors Bureau's Web site has a calendar of events that you can use to plan a good time to visit. Attending a busy community event will expose you to the way life's lived in Downers Grove and...
Living in the 80's ~ A Downtown Ghostly Girl
2011-04-19 04:33:00 I honestly never liked haunted houses. All my siblings and friends as kids would love going to these favorite of Halloween pastimes, not me. Gallivanting through one particular haunted house, I hid. I crawled into one of the obstacles set out for small children and got lost on purpose. I had no desire to partake in the idea that anything scary being fun. I still wonder why people want to feel fear for the purpose of fun, but that's another topic entirely. Haunted houses, for the most part are not something I decided that I wanted to do, I've never been the type of person that wanted to go 'ghost hunting'. Because of who I am I was asked to...

What will $1,700 get a renter in downtown Chicago?
2011-02-04 23:42:00 Of the 1,055 homes currently listed for rent in 14 downtown ZIP codes, 147 have been available for a week or less (or at least were taken off the MLS and put right back on). The median price for all downtown rentals is just under $2,000 a month, but for these new listings it's closer to $1,700. Condo selling below 1999 price in downtown Deerfield
2010-11-23 00:00:00 Virtually every piece of property sells, sooner or later. Sooner or later, the common mantra you see in real estate listings - "hurry, won't last"- comes true for almost every property. Unit 132, at 1015 Deerfield Rd in Deerfield, is on day 237 of its "hurry won't last" phase. The 2-bedroom, 2-bath condo across the road from Maplewood Park and a few short blocks from the Metra station, is currently priced at $125,000 - just below the $127,000 it sold for in 1999. A quick scan of condo units for sale within a block of this seems to indicate that the units have quite a lot of staying power. A block to the east, at Deerfield Gardens, 4 units in...
The ups and downs of downtown Chicago's rental market
2010-11-19 23:27:00 Fifty-two weeks ago, we started tracking the number of homes listed for rent in 14 different downtown-area ZIP codes. (Every Friday, using the "rental" filter in Coldwell Banker's Quick Search, we pull up the number of listings for 60601, 60602, 60603, 60604, 60605, 60606, 60607, 60608, 60610, 60611, 60616, 60622, 60654, and 60661, and record them in a Google Docs spreadsheet. The chart above is the week-by-week trend line for total listings in all 14 ZIP codes. On the Friday after Thanksgiving, 2009, 1,979 homes were listed for rent. That number decreased gradually throughout the first half of 2010, moving to as low as 1,286 listings at one point. Inventory spiked, passing the 1,600-home mark in the first week...

The Wilderness Downtown Video. Power of HTML5.
2010-09-02 21:30:00 You may have already seen this doing the rounds, rock band Arcade Fire, together with Google and artist Chris Milk, launched an interactive video set to the band’s track “We Used to Wait.” Called “The Wilderness Downtown,”. This clever video starts by asking you to enter your childhood address which serves as the setting for the video. This experience has been optimised for Google Chrome and is a great example of how powerful HTML5 is, even at this fairly early stage in the implementation of the new standards. Some of the clever techniques used here include: HTML5 Canvas 3D engine renders a flocking bird simulation that reacts to the music and mouse. HTML5 audio plays music and keeps track of timecode. HTML5 video plays film clips in custom sizes. Choreographed windows are triggered by the music and placed relative to screen size. Images extracted from Google Maps and Street View rendered as scripted 3D views. Animated elements dynamically composited o...

Changing Times at John Gray's Downtown - A Food Revolution in Cancun
2010-06-07 23:28:00 It began with an impassioned invitation on Facebook a few weeks ago, a call to action from local celebrity Chef John Gray for all of us to wake up! Wake up and start really thinking about the food we put into our mouths. Where the vegetables and fruits are grown. How and by whom the animals are raised that become our steaks, hamburgers, bacon... Unless you have been living under a rock, you have seen the global trend toward eating local, making well informed responsible choices about what food we buy and prepare for our families. Organic, free range, hormone free, these are the marketing tags we now look for as we make our way through the aisles of our local supermarkets. But one wonders: When you go out to enjoy a meal in a restaurant, do you expect the same care has been given to the selection of ingredients that make their way to your well appointed, candle lit table? John Gray thinks we should demand it. Rob and I made our way to Cancun for the unveiling of the menu and had a ch...

New Elysian Hotel, Balsan bistro offer luxurious taste of Paris in downtown
2010-01-11 09:12:00 A glimpse at Balsan, the European-inspired bistro inside the Gold Coast's new Elysian Hotel. The casually chic eatery takes its inspiration from 1920s Paris--which of course thrills Francophiles like me. Last time this year, I was in Paris, celebrating the arrival of my 40th birthday. But this year I stayed put, with a lack of vacation days and a limited budget prompting me to remain stateside for this year's anniversaire. But for Francophiles like me who wish they were somewhere in La France, downtown Chicago's new luxury Elysian Hotel-- and Balsan, its gorgeous European-inspired bistro, offer lovely touches of the country minus the travel costs and airport hassles. Everything about the Elysian, from the moment you enter the French-inspired...
Nuba Authentic Lebanese Cuisine on West Hastings and Cambie in Downtown Van
2009-12-14 13:06:00 That restaurant is located at the basement of the Dominion Building, one of the grand historic buildings in the young city of Vancouver. This 99 year old building was the tallest building in the British Empire when it was built. Because of its ornate structure, this building had been used to film many movies some of which includes The Neverending Story and Battlestar Galactica. Nuba is the name of the restaurant we went to. The entrance to the basement restaurant is just at the corner of West Hastings and Cambie. Nuba is a Lebanese restaurant. It was interesting to note that Nuba used to operate from the very spot that the La Taqueria Taco Shop is today. I guess business is good and they moved to this new location. Actually Nuba also has another smaller restaurant on Seymour too.

La Taqueria Taco Shop on West Hastings and Hamilton in Downtown Vancouver
2009-12-14 06:00:00 Anyway, this is about my first food blogger meet organized via Twitter. @604foodtography sent a twitter to @tibbidy, @edlau and myself asking if we wanted to have a quick bite at La Taqueria. @seasaltwithfood picked up our tweet and decided to join us as she was already in downtown. La Taqueria is located on West Hastings and Hamilton in downtown Vancouver. I had never walked along this stretch of the road before. So it was a surprise when @604foodtography pointed to me that La Taqueria is located just across the street from Marc Emery's headquarters (Marc Emery is known as the Prince of Pot in Canada) and next door to Vancouver Seeds Bank (which sells Marijuana seeds for medicinal purposes). It was OK. I did not feel unsafe waiting outside La Taqueria in bright daylight. It was cold though waiting outside. Both @604foodtography and I were there first. I told @604foodtography I had a feeling that @edlau would be late because he had a reputation for being late. True enough, he ...

Man with no pants looks for job in downtown Chicago
2009-11-13 10:16:00 His wife wears the pants. He wears the boxers. At around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 12, I was walking on the Magnificent Mile by the Tribune Tower when I saw a guy with a suit coat, a dress shirt and no pants on. Obviously that caught my attention. I looked at the sign around his waist, and it said, "Hire me. My wife wears the pants." He was passing out his resume with just boxer shorts on, bare legs and dress shoes. His sign also said he had 18 years of design experience. And I watched people smiling, walking by and some walked up to him to get a resume. I was amused at first, but then...

Apartments vs. Condos downtown
2009-10-28 22:11:00 Crain's reported this morning that 241 downtown units that were slated to be condos will now be converted into apartments. The Mondial at 900 W. Huron and the Trio at 650-670 W. Wayman expect to announce the decisions for sure in the coming months, but have canceled some contracts with buyers. The article brings up some good points- potential buyers who thought they were in good shape two years ago may not really want to close today. And not as many buyers can afford loans today. But other issues may be at hand here: We can't keep dumping hundreds and hundreds of rental units into the downtown market, either. There's not many new jobs becoming available and those that are...
