5th Round Draft Pick, QB Josh Johnson, adjusting to NFL Life
2008-05-06 18:00:00
Tampa Bay Buccaneer 5th Round Draft Pick Quarterback Josh Johnson is adjusting to the Pro Life. Surprisingly its a lot like his freshman year in college: "It?s like you?re a freshman," Johnson said, shortly after his first practice as a Tampa Bay Buccaneer. "The way I was thinking about it is like you went from high school to college as a freshman. Now I?m just at the next freshman level for me. - Buccaneers.com As expected, Josh was as nervous as anyone of us would have been had we taken the field as a Buccaneer: There was a little bit of extra juice, just to be back on the field," Johnson said. "You?ve got to get your feet wet, but once practice was on, it was football again. It kind of became reality," Johnson said, referring to the first time he pulled on his Buccaneers practice jersey. "Finally today it hit me that I have an opportunity to play for an NFL team, so that?s when it sank in" - Buccaneers.com Josh Johnson on what its like to take the inevitable verbal beating from H...

Better Know a Draft Pick: Tulsa Quaterback Paul Smith

Height 6-1 Weight 208 lbs 40 Yard Dash 4.95 20 Yard Dash 2.81 Bench Reps 26 3 Cone 7.02 Compares To: TROY SMITH-Baltimore: "Both posted impressive numbers as seniors but lack the size and bulk you look for in a quarterback and likely are better fits for a West Coast offense. Smith can dink-and-dunk a defense to death, but he's not a threat as a vertical passer. In an ideal world, he joins the minions of quarterbacks in Tampa Bay, where Jeff Garcia is the perfect tutor for any West Coast quarterback. " Serious Interview With all your on and off-the-field accomplishments, what’s been the overall highlight of your football career? All the individual stuff is neat, not only personally but for the team. Going to three bowl games in my three years as a starter provided a level of consistency. As the starter at the position most people consider the leader of the team. Tul...
Bucs 5th Round NFL Draft Pick: QB Josh Johnson
2008-04-29 05:14:00
Raise your hand if you already created new Bucs QB Josh Johnson via Madden on your Video Game system... Come on don't lie... I was dismayed when Jon Gruden took a Quarterback with that 5th Round Pick, but I was curious as to how the kid's 4.53 speed would play out on my PS2... I gotta say, yeah boy!! Video Game characters aside, this guy has the make-up to be a very special Quarterback in Jon Gruden's system. I know, where have you heard that before. Gruden was quoted as saying in the off-season that he wanted a chance to draft a 1st round Quarterback. Well my man, with Grads and now JJ, that ought to add up to a 1st Round Quarterback.. Hopefully you can mold this guy. I know I look forward to it.What makes Josh exciting? Probably his ability to make plays happen with his feet and his athletic ability to avoid the rush. He's a smart player who does a good job reading the defense and progressing through reads. Despite great legs, he looks for the pass first, and knows when to run...

2008-04-28 13:45:00
Buccaneers.com provides a good collection of quotes from Head Coach Jon Gruden about 1st Round Draft Pick CB Aqib Talib: Gruden on Talib the person: "You're going to meet a guy that has tremendous confidence, he's got a real passion to play," Gruden said. "It's a contagious vibe. He's a leader at [KU], and when you watch him practice or when you see him play, you know who No. 3 is. You just can't help but walk away feeling his presence on a football field. He's that kind of competitor and playmaker. He's a guy that sits on the edge of the chair and he just wants to go out and play," Gruden said. "He wants to be in the yard playing ball, it's just what he does. We need that. We need some juice here, certainly some playmaking, and we need some confidence. Sometimes when he plays there's a little arrogance, honestly. I like this guy a lot. He's a great kid. Football means the world to him, and I think he'll represent us well. I expect him to come in here and full-force com...

First Draft Pick of 2008
2008-04-26 19:41:00
Well the mystery of the first pick was given away a little premature. The Dolphins signed Jake Long to a 5 year deal worth 57.5 million.Long is brought in to build the offensive line hoping to give whichever guy is quarterback some protection. He should also help the running game which struggled after Ronnie Brown went down. Was this the right choice for Miami?Well so far I think it is, but only time will tell. Who will be draft pick #2?

You know that 1st Round NFL Draft Pick? Meet DE Jared Allen
2008-04-18 01:41:00
...UPDATE...Apparently the Bucs and Vikings are having reservations about dumping a ton of money into Jared Allen's lap. The fact that he has a tendency to drink, alot, coupled with the fact that he owns a sports BAR that features "Jared Juice" apparently doesnt sit well with either club and it shouldnt. If the man's jersey number selection (69) wasnt enough, his bar's slogan says it all "Wine 'Em, Dine 'Em, 69 'Em" if the Bucs sign him after that, maybe he'll do an interview here at Buc 'Em, eh, maybe not. I can see a Jared's Arena & Grill going right up beside Tampa's own Mons Venus... Stay classy Jared! Reports everywhere have the Bucs attempting to trade with the Kansas City Chiefs for franchise tagged DE Jared Allen. You may remember last season when the Bucs were rumored to be trading for the Saints Charles Grant, going so far as to have him visit their facilities. I didnt cover that much, as it didnt seem like a real possibility. This Jared Allen situation on the ot...

Meet WR/PR DeSean Jackson (California) potential Tampa Bay Buc Draft Pick
2008-03-22 01:10:00
DeSean Jackson is first and foremost a dual threat. He excels at receiving and returning the football, color me intrigued. Jackson finished with 52 career plays of 20 yards or more. The Phinsider Community Mock Draft: Pick #6 - New York Jets
2008-03-21 17:39:00
With the fifth pick of The Phinsider Community Mock Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs select Ryan Clady, OT, Boise State. This was the closest vote yet, with Clady getting 30% of the vote and Glenn Dorsey getting 27%.  Vernon Gholston followed in 3rd with 12%. So the draft now looks like this so far: Miami Dolphins - Chris Long, DE, Virginia (49%) St. Louis Rams - Jake Long, OT, Michigan (67%) Atlanta Falcons - Matt Ryan, QB, BC (68%) Oakland Raiders - Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas (47%) Kansas City Chiefs - Ryan Clady, OT, Boise St. (30%) Up next is pick #6, which belongs to the NY Jets.  You can head over to NY Landing Strip if you want to get up to date insight on the Jets.  And below are the Jets' draft needs, according to NFL Draft Countdown: 1. Wide Receiver: After talking about it for a couple of years they finally "jettisoned" Justin McCareins so depth is needed. If he keeps complaining about his contract Laveranues Coles could be gone too. 2. Cornerback: Dar...
The Phinsider Community Mock Draft: Pick #5 - Kansas City Chiefs
2008-03-20 17:40:00
With the fourth pick in The Phinsider Community Mock Draft, the Oakland Raiders select Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas. McFadden won with 47% of the vote.  Vernon Gholston followed in second with 25%.  Glenn Dorsey came in third with 17%. So now the draft looks like this so far: Miami Dolphins - Chris Long, DE, Virginia (49%) St. Louis Rams - Jake Long, OT, Michigan (67%) Atlanta Falcons - Matt Ryan, QB, BC (68%) Oakland Raiders - Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas (47%) Next up is the fifth pick, which belongs to the Kansas City Chiefs.  For all the Chiefs' news and insight you could want, head over to Arrowhead Pride.  Listed below are the Chiefs' draft needs, according to NFL Draft Countdown: 1. Offensive Line: What had been a team strength for many years has now become their greatest weakness. It's not easy to replace guys like Willie Roaf and Will Shields and they certainly proved that. 2. Cornerback: Ty Law was sent packing and Patrick Surtain is near the e...
The Phinsider Community Mock Draft: Pick #4 - Oakland Raiders
2008-03-19 17:36:00
With the third pick in The Phinsider Community Mock Draft, the Atlanta Falcons select Matt Ryan, QB, Boston College. Ryan received 68% of the total vote.  Glenn Dorsey was in second place, with 21%. So now the draft looks like this so far: Miami Dolphins - Chris Long, DE, Virginia (49%) St. Louis Rams - Jake Long, OT, Michigan (67%) Atlanta Falcons - Matt Ryan, QB, BC (68%) Up next, with the 4th pick, are the Oakland Raiders.  For all of your Raider needs, including news and insight, check out Silver and Black Pride.  Below are the Raiders' draft needs, according to NFL Draft Countdown: 1. Defensive Line: Depending on where the choose to play Tommy Kelly, who they grossly overpaid for in free agency, they will either need find a stud pass rusher at defensive end or defensive tackle. 2. Offensive Tackle: Either Kwame Harris or second year pro Mario Henderson will hold down the old fort at left tackle (they hope) but Cornell Green leaves much to be desi...
The Phinsider Community Mock Draft: Pick #3 - Atlanta Falcons
2008-03-18 17:39:00
With the second pick in The Phinsider Community Mock Draft, the St. Louis Rams select Jake Long, OT, Michigan. Jake Long finished with 67% of the vote.  He was followed by Vernon Gholston (21%) and Glenn Dorsey (7%). So that makes the draft so far look like this: Miami Dolphins - Chris Long, DE, Virginia (49%) St. Louis Rams - Jake Long, OT, Michigan (67%) Up next, with the 3rd pick, are the Atlanta Falcons.  Below are their needs, according to NFL Draft Countdown: 1. Quarterback: Neither Joey Harrington or Byron Leftwich were the long-term answer and even though Chris Redman played admirably late in the year this franchise needs a signal caller in the worst way. 2. Offensive Tackle: Wayne Gandy was sent packing and will need to be replaced at left tackle because it's highly unlikely that guys like Renardo Foster and Quinn Ojinnaka are starting material in the NFL. 3. Defensive Tackle: Rod Coleman was their one impact presence on the interior but he's gon...
The Phinsider Community Mock Draft: Pick #2 - St. Louis Rams
2008-03-17 17:37:00
With the first pick in The Phinsider Community Mock Draft, the Miami Dolphins have selected Chris Long, DE, Virginia. Long received 49% of the votes, with Jake Long in second place at 34%.  A distant third was Matt Ryan, with 7%. So up next is the #2 pick, belonging to the St. Louis Rams.  Below are their draft needs, according to NFL Draft Countdown: 1. Defensive End: Leonard Little will turn 34-years-old during the 2008 season and he is starting to wear down while James Hall was recently cut, leaving Victor Adeyanju as a starter on the other side. 2. Wide Receiver: Isaac Bruce, who was the last Ram around from the old Los Angeles days, was let go which means the depth is now extremely sketchy behind their starters Torry Holt & Drew Bennett. 3. Offensive Line: Two years in a row now Orlando Pace has gone down with season-ending injuries, Alex Barron is best suited for the right side and there are still a ton of question marks on the interior. The Phinsider Community Mock Draft: Pick #1 - Miami Dolphins
2008-03-13 22:35:00
Well I posed the question to everyone in the community and it seems as though there is enough interest in doing a community mock draft.  So here's how it will work.  Every weekday, I will post a thread on the main page about whichever team is up to pick.  I'll recap the picks up to this point and then post a scouting report or two from a draft website about what that team's needs happen to be.  Then I'll attach a poll which asks you all who you think the pick will be.  You'll then have to the deadline I give you to vote on the pick.  And we'll continue on until we are done with the first round, which will likely be the day before the NFL Draft.  We'll then see how accurate we have been. So I figured I'd get this thing rolling now.  First up, the Miami Dolphins.   Seeing as how this is a Dolphins website so most (if not all) visitors are Dolphin fans, I don't think I really need to post our draft needs.   This is also the onl...
MHR Draft Resource: Draft Pick Chart
2008-03-11 14:15:00
This is an up to date chart that is labeled with each team, the number of the pick and any notes regarding who got which pick from where.  Below the fold are the notes themselves, as well as a quick summary of likely Compensatory picks that will be awarded this year (based on the vagaries of free agency around the league), and a link to a site which gives a much more in depth analysis of the likely compensatory picks.  This post includes a link to a downloadable PDF that you can print out for handy reference.  I will update the chart once the compensatory picks are officially released, as well as several other undisclosed picks that have yet to be officially announced (and may not even fall in this draft year).  I hope you all enjoy! Download your printable PDF here!  Browns to Cowboys. The Cleveland Browns traded their first-round selection in the 2008 Draft to the Dallas Cowboys, as well as the 36th overall selection in the 2007 Draft (later traded to ...

Rule 5 Draft: Pick Then Trade for Cash
2007-12-06 20:22:00
The Rule 5 Draft just concluded and the Marlins picked up RHP Jose (don’t call him Che) Guevara from the Reds and then traded him to the Padres for cash. Since the Marlins have to guarantee him a spot on the roster, it’s safe to say that they simply didn’t have room for ...
Missing: #1 Overall Draft Pick JaMarcus Russell
2007-10-31 18:16:00
On Monday I commented that I couldn't figure out why Daunte Culpepper was still starting for the Raiders.  He isn't playing well this season - a 56% completion rate, 817 yards, 4 TD, 4 INT in five games - and his performance the past two weeks have been especially poor.  Culpepper's totals of one touchdown and two interceptions turned a pair of possible (even likely) wins into a 12-10 and a 13-9 defeat.  At this rate, the Raiders are going to end up with the top pick in next year's draft where at least they can draft a franchise QB for the future. Errrr...wait. So this brings up the question: Where is JaMarcus Russell?  Why isn't he playing?  Trent Edwards has played well for Buffalo this season and there are reports that the Dolphins are going to start their QB-of-the-Future, rookie John Beck, when the Dolphins return from their bye.  So why isn't the #1 QB - the #1 pick overall - ready and/or able to start his NFL career? There seem to be two ma...
Subject: Chargers trade 2008 draft pick - by: GoTalkSports
2007-10-20 00:00:00
It was announced today that the San Diego Chargers have traded away their 2008 2nd round draft pick to acquire wide receiver Chris Chambers from the Miami Dolphins. Chambers, a 2nd round draft pick himself in the 2001 draft out of the University of Wisconsin, has yet to truly meet the high expectations set upon him by many early in his career. Chambers is in the 7th season of his career that has, by the standards of those who scouted him, been somewhat of a disappointment. Aside from his rookie year, i...
More On Free Agent Draft Pick Compensation
2007-10-17 23:11:00
I've always felt that my knowledge of Type A/B free agents and the accompanying draft pick compensation was lacking.  I'll try to do a better job this year keeping up with the vagaries of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. I was reminded today that the first 15 picks in 2008's draft are protected.  That means those 15 teams can sign Type A free agents (pretty much the best ones) and at worst only lose their second-round pick.  Here are the first 15 teams drafting in '08: 1. Devil Rays2. Pirates3. Royals4. Orioles5. Giants6. Marlins7. Reds8. White Sox9. Nationals10. Astros11. Rangers12. Athletics13. Cardinals14. Twins15. Dodgers That should make Dodgers fans feel much better about their season.  They could've easily missed the cutoff and the playoffs.  The Rangers can chase Torii Hunter, the White Sox can chase Aaron Rowand, and the Nats can go after Andruw Jones without risking their picks.  On the flip side, these clubs are in jeopardy of losi...

Greg Oden, NBA Celebrity and #1 draft pick, out for season
2007-09-13 08:50:00
Celebrated Trail Blazers rookie center Greg Oden, the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft, will likely miss the 2007-2008 season after undergoing knee surgery Thursday, the team said. Tough break for Oden. I was looking forward to seeing how he would do his rookie season. Guess it's all about Kevin Durant for that Rookie of the Year. Popular: 10 hours 29 minutes ago source: (sports.espn.go.com)
