Drug Companies Want to Be Taken Seriously
2008-07-21 00:00:00
When I was in high school, I had the coolest pen – it was silver, sleek, and wrote smoothly. On one side, however, there was the logo for a prescription drug. I had no idea what the drug was or what it did, but it had come from a friend whose mother was a nurse. Years later, I dated a guy
Human Rights a Drug War Casualty
2008-07-20 05:35:00
Image via Wikipedia The drug war's dirty washing is exhibited everyday in popular media, absent scrutiny or oversight from academic or civil society.I suspect all those living in this institution we call New Zealand would be generally appalled if it were argued that by our collective (in)actions we were held to be unfit members of the UN, yet everyday we incarcerate and continue to deprive the freedom of thousands of people in the name of compliance with one UN "Single Convention" - and to what end?I have on many occasions raised the glaring human rights anomaly with government select committee and commissions including the NZ Human Rights Commissioner Rosslyn Noonan. It has been the character of the response that 'drugs are illegal' and that people may choose not to consume them, thus consumption or possession is not a 'rights issue', rather society has the preeminent right to be protected from drugs' harms and consumers. Else why the law? This is wrong. It doesn't matter how...
WHO Says US/NZ Drug Policies "a failure' ?
2008-07-15 22:17:00
The World Health Organization Documents Failure of U.S. Drug PoliciesTuesday, July 8th, 2008 / By Bruce Mirken The United States has some of the world's most punitive drug policies and has led the cheering section for tough "war on drugs" policies worldwide, but a new international study suggests that those policies have been a crashing failure. A World Health Organization survey of 17 countries, conducted by some of the world's leading substance abuse researchers, found that we have the highest rates of marijuana and cocaine use. The numbers are startling. In the United States, 42.4 percent admitted having used marijuana. The only other nation that came close was New Zealand, another bastion of get-tough policies, at 41.9 percent. No one else was even close. (more)So? Whats new about this unremarkable fact? Could it be that the "MethCon's" and "Kiwi Party" think we can incarcerate our way to a drug free society. Perhaps the media might have liked to print the following attribut...

Milestones in Drug Policy, Homegrown Solutions Are Best.

Milestones in Drug Policy, Homegrown Solutions Are Best.Thirty five years ago today, on July 1, 1973, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) was established, based on an executive order signed by President Richard Nixon in March, 1973.A pivotal part of Nixon's War on Drugs, the DEA was formed by merging the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs (BNDD), the Office of Drug Abuse Law Enforcement (ODALE) and several other Federal offices. As a United States Department of Justice law enforcement agency, the DEA's primary task was to combat drug smuggling and use within the United States, and coordinate and pursue US drug investigations abroad. In 1973, the DEA employed 2775 people, 1470 of whom were special agents, and had an annual budget of $74.9 million. By 2005, the DEA boasted 10,894 employees, 5,296 special agents, and an annual budget of $2.141 billion. In 2007, the annual budget was increased again, by $71 million per year, making the total 34 times larger than the original...

Nights of extreme Stupidity in Christchurch Drug Policy
2008-06-27 23:00:00
The entire alcohol debate is gravely flawed with a suspension of any analysis around 'alcohol' being a drug. I hear it labeled so in pejorative terms by people who in so doing believe that somehow that justifies there prejudices to all drugs. Yet there in the middle of this see "Nights of extreme in Christchurch" [http://www.stuff.co.nz/print/4-599551a19743.html ] we have policeman attributing more moderate behaviors associated with the time when raves fueled by Ecstasy occurred describing "E" as a 'happy drug'.And there lies the clue. It is so obvious to anyone who looks at what drives the behavioral outcomes, the need to be part of something, to bond... "Until we accept that our national drug policy is corrupted by the idea there is 'evil vs good' drugs we never get a handle on this."Mere possession of "Ecstasy" [MDMA] was elevated to a Class A schedule (which to a young person means 'must be really excellent') with life in prison, comparable to murder. Yet, in the London p...

Synthetic Yeast Creates Malaria Drug
2008-06-04 20:49:00
According to New Scientist, researchers in California are scaling up for industrial production a process to produce a synthetic strain of yeast engineered to produce a compound called artemisinin, which is used to treat malaria. The current process used to produce the medicine is expensive, but this new process has been optimized such that—within two to three years—they could produce enough of the drug to meet the needs of the entire world. Attempts to use living organisms to produce medicines have been underway for several years now. If the artemisinin process being commercialized (by Sanofi-Aventis) is successful, it would be the first major production of medication using a synthetic organism.

STARTLING FACTSGSACS study reveals drug abuse among children in GoaPreetu Nair | TNNPanaji: A study conducted by the Goa State AIDS Control Society (GSACS) has made some startling revelations. If you thought that drug abuse is a youth problem, think again. The study reveals that even children aged 12 years abuse drugs orally and by the time they are in their twenties, take to intravenous drugs. Many start by s m o k i n g cannabis when at school and later shift to ecstasy and even heroin and brown sugar to get a ‘definite high’. The mean age for sexual debut is estimated at 19 years of age, with some having their first sexual experience at the age of 17 or below. The study, Rapid Assessment in Goa, which was conducted by a Delhi-based NGO SHARAN for GSACS presents a snapshot of drug use trends in ...

United States customs officials have seized a statue of Jesus Christ made from plaster mixed with cocaine - the latest sophisticated attempt to smuggle drugs from Mexico. Sniffer dogs at the border crossing in Laredo, Texas, alerted officials to the smell of narcotics in the 3 kilogram statue, which was in the trunk of a car being driven by a Mexican woman into the United States last week. “The statue tested positive for cocaine,” Nancy Herrera, an official at the US Attorney’s Office Southern District of Texas said.

Ass Cream - The Hot New Club Drug
2008-06-03 01:00:00
Apparently there is a new trend spreading around the club scene in NYC amongst the young males looking to get laid. While they are waiting in line they slather the well known ass cream Preparation H all over their stomach and chest. The hope or desired effect is that the cream will make them looked more ripped thus upping their chances of duping a female club goer into banging them. “If you want to get [lucky], you have to know how to dance, and if you want girls to dance with you, you have to look ripped.” Sound logic, but why is ass cream necessary? Preparation H contains a drug called phenylephrine HCL which when applied shrinks blood vessels in the area which then reduces blood and fluid in said area. This shit isn’t going to turn a beer gut into a six pack but the broken logic is that it will make your chest and stomach more defined. The company that produces Preparation H does not condone these “off ass” applications and does not recommend them. ...

Dog’s Drug Causes Man to be charged with DWI
2008-05-31 01:24:00
If you wondering why a man would take his dog’s drugs and get charged with a DWI (driving while intoxicated) it’s a serious mistake that happens quite often.   Apparently a Des Moines Iowa man was apprended after he apparently mistook his dog’s prescribed drugs instead of his own drugs.   Clarence Fenton crashed his SUV into a telephone pole as a result of ingesting his dog Saturn’s medication. The drug was prescribed for his dog’s seizures and contained a powerful ingredient Phenobarbital which is also used in humans for the same condition.  After Clarence appeared in court he stated he “did not remember taking the pills” although police found the pills in his vehicle. Clarence was supposed to take his own medication for depression which he said he did the day of the crash.  It remains unknown if he took both on the same day or just the phenobarbital. The Iowa State Poison Control Center indicates that people mistakenly take their pet&rs...

Rimonabant: Miracle Drug for Obesity
2008-05-29 19:53:00
Rimonabant decreases appetite, weight, and may cause some nausea, depression and anxiety. For weight control, and therefore its effects on obesity and incidence of diabetes/metabolic syndrome and ultimately the chance of decreasing heart disease in our ever expanding population, rimonabant or a drug like it may have some uses. The drug has been well tested for the past two years on men who have a waist circumference of greater than 40 inches and women who have a waist circumference of greater than 35 inches. This drug however may not ever come to this country due to the possibility that depressive side effects may lead to increased suicide (not the way we want to decrease weight in our population, or suits in our courtrooms).Unfortunately, doctors are left with few choices when suggesting weight reduction to overweight and obese patients. The current available drugs (orlistat and sibutramine) are actually very weak, and most have not been documented to keep weight off after one year....
