Schmoll joins Lo Duca & Milledge
2008-04-17 02:20:00 Steve Schmoll came to the Mets in the Duaner Sanchez trade, prior to the 2006 season Omar sent Jae Seo to the Dodgers for Sanchez and Schmoll. Seo was subsequently traded to the Rays for Mark Hendrickson and then ended up pitching over seas. When Schmoll came over he was much less accomplished then Sanchez but did have some experience in the majors with Los Angeles (2005- 48gms/ 5. 01 ERA). I never understood why Schmoll didn't a chance at the end of the season but while he served for two years as the Zephyrs closer and late inning reliever, he never did come up. Schmoll had drastically changed his delivery from a 3/4 Laredo style to a full submariner like Chad Bradford, it resulted in his ERA going from 4.69 in 2006 to 3.76 last year. At the end of spring (this year) Schmoll was released by the Mets and Mack Attack is reporting that the Nationals have signed Schmoll.The Washington Nationals signed RHP Steve Schmoll. Quite a night at the ballpark for President Bush: Snubs Lo Duca, calls for
2008-03-31 22:53:00 President George Bush, once the owner of the steroid-riddled Texas Rangers, snubbed Nationals catcher Paul Lo Duca last night when he threw out the first ball at the Nats new stadium. Perhaps Bush became concerned that Lo Duca -- apparently a lifelong juicer -- would chuck that ball back at his head, or throw a Clemens-esque bat his way. The VIllage Voice says thus: Oh, they're so happy over on ESPN because of the Washington Nationals' new baseball stadium, which opened last night when George W. Bush threw up the first pitch. The doofus POTUS was wild with his throw to Nats' manager Manny Acta. Strange, isn't it, that Bush's battery mate was Acta instead of the Nats' catcher, Paul Lo Duca. But the ex-Met is ensnared in the steroids scandal, so his PR quotient is below the Mendoza Line. When asked by the ESPN team about the steroid scandals, Bush fumbled his way through the issue, and responded to the Mitchell Report (which we bet he didn't read) in an oblique way:F...

Odds and Ends: Jerome Williams, Linden, Lo Duca
2008-03-18 10:46:00 Below you'll find the day's random rumors and links. Remember Jerome Williams? He's begging the Giants or any other team to give him a shot, "even if it means in A-ball" according to John Shea. The 26 year-old Hawaiin couldn't find any success last year with Washington. He started out pretty strong with the Giants back in 2003-04. Todd Linden can get out of his minor league deal with Oakland if offered a deal in Japan, which is a possibility. Paul Lo Duca has choice words for the Mets, rejecting the notion that they were ever interested or that he demanded three years. The Astros still have Mark Loretta on the radar. The Brewers don't seem to have any trades in the works. He deems it "pure speculation," but Buster Olney wonders whether the Angels should call the A's about Joe Blanton. Support for my contention that RBI Baseball is better than today's baseball video games.

Nationals Sign Lo Duca
2007-12-11 05:13:00 UPDATE, 12-10-07 at 10:11pm: The Nationals paid a fairly hefty $5MM for Lo Duca. This is for a backstop who hit .272/.311/.378 while throwing out a below-average 23.4% of basestealers in 2007. He'd better call a good game. FROM 12-10-07 at 1:59pm: According to Barry Svrluga of the Washington Post, the Nationals have signed Paul Lo Duca to a one-year deal. He apparently wanted $5MM; I imagine he got a bit less than that. Four days ago Joel Sherman said the Blue Jays were putting the "finishing touches" on a one-year, $3MM deal with Lo Duca. My reaction: eh. I'm not sure what Lo Duca adds to the 2008 Nationals that they couldn't get elsewhere for less money. I guess they could hope he has a big first half and then try to flip him for a prospect. Mets fans: is Lo Duca good at naturing young pitchers? That could be one decent reason to sign him. showad();

Blue Jays Like Lo Duca, Clement, Armas
2007-11-30 16:47:00 J.P. Ricciardi is going bargain-shopping this winter. The Jays won't be in on any big-name free agents. Instead, names like Paul Lo Duca, Matt Clement, and Tony Armas are on Ricciardi's shopping list. The Jays like the idea of pairing Gregg Zaun with anothe veteran backstop, but don't want to give out a deal greater than one year. It doesn't seem like Lo Duca would go for that, but sometimes the last catcher standing has to settle. It happened to Bengie Molina in '06 and he was coming off a decent year. The Marlins could pluck one of Lo Duca or Michael Barrett and the other one could get screwed. The Jays have good rotation depth: Roy Halladay, A.J. Burnett, Dustin McGowan, Shaun Marcum, Casey Janssen, and Gustavo Chacin. That front three stacks up with anyone's when healthy. You can never have too much pitching, however, so projects like Clement and Armas are being considered. Clement worked with Jays pitching coach Brad Arnsber...

Looking good for Lo Duca
2007-11-06 04:30:00 As it's been well documented Paul Lo Duca wants to return to the Mets in 2008 and has said he'll accept a home town discount to make it happen. After receiving a luke warm reception from management "they want the player" without any further talks, Lo Duca's agent set-up a meeting with Omar to transpire during the GM meetings this week. Omar talked with reporters in the lobby today and said he was optimistic about re-signing Lo Duca. To me going from a player of interest to optimistic is a huge step forward. Lo Duca Vs. Posada
2007-11-04 04:42:00 Jorge Posada is a Hall of Fame catcher and should probably retire where he started, as a Yankee. When it's all said and done, I do believe Posada will re-sign with the Yankees, unless another team completely over pays for him. As intriguing as Posada may be, I just can't believe that Omar would give a five year contract to a 36 y/o catcher. Furthermore, we've seen firsthand what happens when a HOF player joins a team for the money, when his heart is elsewhere. According to reports from a friend close to Posada, he's using the Mets to drive up the price on the Yankees, which may have backfired and is why he may have released the statement about his potential new Yankees coach. It's clear where his heart is and we should be used no more....."Girardi was my mentor and he always taught me the value of having a great work ethic and how it was most important to maintain the position year after year," said Posada, who has been silent publicly since the Yanks' season ended. source Dai...
