Replacing One Durbin With Another
2008-06-04 02:00:00
In one of my first posts here at Fangraphs I discussed some odd name similarities amongst players on the Phillies. One I did not mention was that, since 1909 there have only been two major leaguers with the last name of Durbin—JD and Chad—and both are currently on the Phillies; incidentally, they are not ...
For starters, Philly's Durbin has been solid as a reliever
2008-04-05 14:43:00
It's no secret Chad Durbin fancies himself a starter, and that he could end up as one by the end of the season. But after losing out on the competition for the No. 5 spot in the rotation, the offseason free-agent acquisition is proving to be a valuable arm in the Philadelphia Phillies' bullpen. Durbin appeared in all three games in the Nationals series, allowing no runs and two hits in three innings of work. Not bad considering he had never pitched in back-to-back outings prior to this season the Philadelphia Daily News reported. In yesterday's 10-inning, 8-7 win, he pitched a crucial 1¹⁄³ innings after lefthander Jamie Moyer left the game just one out into the fourth inning. Durbin and five other relievers combined to pitch the final 6¹⁄³ innings, allowing one run and five hits as the Phillies rallied from a 6-1 deficit.
Senators Grassley & Durbin Confront Firms, Stand Up for American Profession
2008-04-03 00:09:00
DURBIN AND GRASSLEY ZERO IN ON H-1B VISA DATA God bless Senators Dick Durbin and Chuck Grassley.  They are asking some tough questions on H-1B and L-1 Guest worker Visas and how they are being used.  For some background, H-1B guest worker Visas are a temporary, corporate sponsored method to bring in foreign labor.  The program is supposed to be about supplementing the US labor force with specialty skilled professionals who cannot be found domestically.  But instead, the program often bypasses American professionals capable of performing the work desired.  In other words, the H-1B guest worker visa is often used as a labor arbitrage vehicle.    Labor arbitrage is a method to increase profits by squeezing wages of workers. Business Week has published a handy table showing how the biggest users of these insourcing methods (bringing in cheaper labor via guest worker Visas) are Indian firms which specialize in providing technical services at lower costs. From his press release Durbin ...

Phillies | C. Durbin pitches minor league game Tuesday
2008-03-12 15:48:00
Todd Zolecki, of the Philadelphia Inquirer, reports Philadelphia Phillies P Chad Durbin pitched a minor league game against the Baltimore Orioles Tuesday, March 11, allowing two earned runs on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts in three innings of work.

The situation here is far worse than the national foreclosure picture. Carol Thomas is 69 years old. Senator Dick Durbin: Obama Always Against Iraq War - Warns Bill Clinton To
2008-01-13 08:38:00
I knew it would come to this point where Illinois Senator Dick Durbin would step into the fray of words between the Obama and Clinton campaigns. In this case, according to Politico, Durbin has said President Bill Clinton?s comments about Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) are getting ?too personal,? and called on the former president to refrain from attacking Obama?s integrity. ?I?m really troubled by his questioning the sincerity of Barack Obama?s opposition to the war in Iraq,? Durbin said. ?I really think it is unfortunate to question Barack?s sincerity on the war. He has been there from the start, opposing this war.? That Durbin stepped was a sign of an establishment politco excercizing power over a campaign, to an extent, but also sending a message to the electorate that Senator Obama's role as a U.S. Senator should be respected, something the Clinton people have not done of late.
Phillies close to landing Durbin, Jenkins
2007-12-20 17:46:00
The Philadelphia Phillies could have a couple of new players on their roster before next week. Quoting baseball sources, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported the Phillies were getting close to contract agreements with two free agents: outfielder Geoff Jenkins and righthander Chad Durbin. Announcements could come this week. Jenkins reportedly had been deciding between the Phillies and San Diego Padres, but general manager Kevin Towers told reporters Tuesday in San Diego that the club had backed away from Jenkins.Durbin had been deciding between the Phillies and the Pittsburgh Pirates, but the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has reported that the Phils have knocked the Bucs out of contention.

Durbin missed? Oasis Hillbillies and a job opening
2007-12-20 05:49:00
Chad Durbin. The Post-Gazette scooped Chad Durbin signing with the Phillies and suggested the Pittsburgh Pirates finished second again in trying to sign a free agent.  But did the Pirates really even want Durbin? Doubtful. On paper, Durbin looked strong as a reliever - a 4.18 ERA over 28 innings, 1.29 WHIP, and a 2-0 record. As a starter, he was 6-7, had a 4.88 ERA, and a tad higher WHIP at 1.48. But what you don't see is the 26 bequested runners he had and the fact only 38% of them scored, so his ERA could have been higher. In other words, he was kind of lucky overall. You also don't see that he tossed 2/3rd's of his innings in the first half and then got rocked in the second (5.71 ERA in 42 IP and 18 appearances). Nor do you see his xERA of 5.35 for the season which is a good indicator of where he really was at in Detroit. Fans think because he was in the AL he'll do a lot better in the NL, and especially in the NLCD. Don't be too sure in Durbin's case. The reason I say...
Second Fiddle Again, Durbin to Phils
2007-12-20 03:09:00
After pursuing Durbin in a trade with Detroit, prior to Durbin being non-tendered by the Tigers, the Pirates have lost out a second time.  Durbin will be signing with the Phillies.  This will be the second time in a week the Pirates have come up short in the bidding for a free agent pitcher.  Last week the Pirates were outbid for the services of Luis Vizcaino by the Rockies. Other bits: The Pirates have come to terms with two pitchers signing minor league deals.  Adam Bernero, 31, a right handed starter.  Also, Kuwatamania reigns.  Masumi Kuwata agreed to terms on a minor league deal. In the same article... The Pirates are not one of a dozen teams interested in Prior.  Read the line a few times, since it is worded oddly. Chacon and Dotel are on the radar.  Which one will be strike three on the free agent front?

Today's Non-tenders: Towers, Prior, Everett, Durbin
2007-12-13 06:48:00
Tim's out for the night, so we've got a fresh post started for the non-tenders.  MLB.com has a running list as well. These guys are the officials as of now: As expected, the Marlins non-tendered catcher Miguel Olivo.  Johnny Estrada was another casualty; these two make up the market for starting catchers. The Blue Jays non-tendered Josh Towers, a surprising move.  Some NL team could offer him two years and get league average work out of him. Mark Prior has been non-tendered.  Honestly if I were the Cubs, I would've tossed the $3.5MM his way just to see. Aaron Miles is now a free agent. The A's cut Kiko Calero loose. The Padres have non-tendered four: Morgan Ensberg, Jason Lane, and pitchers Jack Cassell and Ryan Ketchner. RotoWorld speculates that the latter two, not arbitration eligible, could be offered minor league deals. The Royals cut the cord on Emil Brown.  He turns 33 soon; he hit an ugly .257/.300/.347 in 2007.  Brown earned $3.45MM in '0...
Durbin non-tendered
2007-12-13 00:36:00
The Tigers had been working on a trade with the Pirates for Chad Durbin but when all was said and done the Tigers ended up non-tendering the starter.Durban is a 30 y/o right handed starter with eight partial seasons of major league experience, He has been a full time player in three of those seasons. Last year with the Tigers he worked both in the rotation and out of the pen. He wouldn't cost much and isn't arbitration eligible until 2011. Tigers non-tendered RHP Chad Durbin. It seems no deal could be worked out with the Pirates. Perhaps he'll sign with Pittsburgh now that he's a free agent. Durbin appears to be the Tigers' only non-tender, meaning Marcus Thames is sticking around for now. The 30-year-old Durbin probably would have made $1 million or so in arbitration. source Rotoworld .

Remember the rumor about the Pirates trading for Chad Durbin.... The Tigers decided not to offer right-hander Chad Durbin a 2008 contract, making him a free agent Thursday. BTW Take: Expect him to be signed by the Pirates soon.
Odds and Ends: Mench, Kent, Durbin, Wang
2007-12-12 16:58:00
Rounding up this morning's Odds and Ends, to be updated periodically... The Pirates are talking to the Tigers about acquiring Chad Durbin.  The arbitration-eligible Durbin doesn't have a place in Detroit's rotation, but could be useful for the Bucs.  Chien-Ming Wang would like a three or four-year deal with the Yanks. The Phillies will pass on Kevin Mench, though they've still got their eye on Nate McLouth.  The Royals' disinterest in Mench was noted yesterday. We've assumed it for a while, but Jeff Kent playing in 2008 is now official. The Twins may have non-tendered Jason Tyner. showad();

J.D. Durbin struggled and could not get out of the 2nd inning. Durbin allowed 3 ER and 5 hits in only 1 inning of work but received a no-decision thanks to the bullpen and the Phillies offense. Durbin has not made it past the 5th inning in his last three starts but hopes to bounce back next week at St. Louis.

Durbin Calls Out White House On Executive Privilege Sham
2007-08-03 01:37:00
by- Suzie-Q @ 4:38 PM MST When former White House aide Sara Taylor testified in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee last month, Chairman Pat Leahy (D-VT) asked whether President Bush had a role in the firings. Despite being under executive privilege, Taylor stated she did not attend meetings with Bush nor did she believe he was involved in the scandal. In today’s hearing, Leahy asked the same question to White House aide J. Scott Jennings. In contrast to Taylor, Jennings refused to answer, repeatedly citing executive privilege. In fact, Taylor answered “a number of questions that Jennings has refused to answer,” despite both being under similar assertions of executive privilege. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) noted the discrepancy between Taylor and Jennings’ responses and called out Jennings for abusing executive privilege. Jennings responded: “I respect [Taylor’s] decision…but I simply do not intend to disobey a directive from the President.” More

Puzzle Pieces: On Lincecum, Broxton, Durbin, and Those Precious Pirates
2007-07-23 18:52:00
Kind words from Hall of Famer Jim Palmer regarding Tim Lincecum, after the latter twirled eight scoreless innings against Milwaukee on Saturday (via Baseball Think Factory): ?He?s got overwhelming ability,? Palmer said. ?Jim Kaat was saying back in ?90, ?If a guy?s got great velocity, great movement, great location and deception, that guy?s going to the Hall of Fame. This kid looks like he has those four things. Now, he?s just gonna have to figure out how to stay healthy enough to pitch.? The health issue is always trumpeted when a young pitcher as talented and undersized as Lincecum comes through the chute, which is to say, it doesn’t happen often. He’s still only 29, but the slight Roy Oswalt has been the poster child for major league durability in his career, and — what do ya know? — he is leading the NL in innings pitched in 2007. Of course, this comes on the heels of the news that Oswalt will miss a start with chest soreness.  You’re lucky you don&...

Queen of pot jailed (aka: Alison Durbin)
2007-06-01 13:02:00
FORMER Queen of pop Alison Durbin [Giles] has been jailed for one year for drug offences. The sentence follows her guilty plea to growing and selling cannabis. Durbin, 57, who once admitted she was addicted to heroin, was sentenced in the County Court today. She was sentenced to serve 24 months in jail, with half suspended....The court heard that since the early 1980s, Giles had been suffering depression....No one deserves to be in jail for 5 cannabis plants. The injustice is the absurd drug laws that leads to this anachronism of modern times. Where in heavens name was the 'victim' here. Absent a complainant this was an adult consensual activity undeserving of both this trite media 'expose' or the massive waste of police, justice, and corrections resources. The real rort is being rendered on taxpayers. Will Alison's incarceration make an IOTA of difference to cannabis prevalence, price or to drug related crime... if the answer is no then the conclusion is obvious. The law and a...

At least on the Nazi's having used the same torture techniques the administration has approved for detainees.Courtesy of The Daily Dish:"Freezing prisoners to near-death, repeated beatings, long forced-standing, waterboarding, cold showers in air-conditioned rooms, stress positions [Arrest mit Verschaerfung], withholding of medicine and leaving wounded or sick prisoners alone in cells for days on end - all these have occurred at US detention camps under the command of president George W. Bush. Over a hundred documented deaths have occurred in these interrogation sessions. The Pentagon itself has conceded homocide by torture in multiple cases."Oddly enough they also used the same sort of logic about why they tortured them too:"The victims, by the way, were not in uniform. And the Nazis tried to argue, just as John Yoo did, that this made torturing them legit. The victims were paramilitary Norwegians, operating as an insurgency, against an occupying force. And the torturers had also ...

-By Warner Todd HustonIt was news for one day in Chicago, the biggest city in Senator Dick Durbin?s home state. Since then, no one seems to have noticed this absurd bill being pushed by Senator Dick Durbin that would give away Federal welfare money to young lawyers. Of course, Durbin isn?t calling it welfare. He is calling it "debt relief". It sounds helpful and innocuous doesn?t it? Relief is a nice thing, right? On November 27th, the Chicago Sun-Times tried to soft sell the proposal as a way to help "people with over $100,000 debt" get "relief".Gosh that is an awful lot of money to be saddled with, eh?Debt relief may be in sight for lawyersFor prosecutors and public defenders drowning in debt, help might soon be on the way.Since 2003, Sen.
