Durian Cake
2008-07-30 07:43:00 My first recipe after a long break. I had wanted to post other recipes but I had to redo those dishes again just to make sure the quantity is right. So this is easier as I had referred this from a magazine. :PI did this when durian was not in season but I just happened to see them in a supermarket. I knew I had to buy them. I ate some and when I saw the durian cake recipe from a magazine, I kept the rest for it.This recipe, like the 15 minutes Cupcake, is really easy and almost fail proof. Try it if you like durian.Ingredients:250g Mashed Durian Flesh (original was using 170g)250g Butter150g Castor Sugar (original was using 180g)5 Eggs240g Flour, sifted (Plain/All purpose)2 teaspoon Baking Powder, siftedHow to do it:Cream butter and sugar til light fluffy.Add one egg at a time and continue beating.Add in durian gradually and beat for 2 1/2 minutes.Add in flour and baking powder.Mix well.Pour batter into a greased and lined 25cm X 25cam baking tray. ( I baked in 6' rectangle tin an...

Eau de Durian
2008-01-21 23:46:00 Durian? I ate it twice, the first time is a very long and somewhat embarassing story. The second was in a small inn in Thailand, pressured by locals I fell victim to tourist thinking - if I don’t eat this I’m not getting the full experience and if I don’t eat it I’ll regret it for the rest of my life because this is not available at the corner bodega. I was pretty sure it was rotten by the horrible smell but I didn’t want to be rude, once I ate it I remembered that slimy texture and I involuntarily gagged and regurgitated some of it. It’s haunted my mind since and now I see Dr. Murad, you know his great cosmetics I’m sure, thinks Durian will make a great ingredient for skincare!! let’s hope he gets some great scents involved because if not it would be great skincare that doubles as birth control! Total Beauty chatted with Dr. Howard Murad about trends in skincare and what we can expect to see from his brand this year: - “We ...

My New Durian Icon
2008-01-20 15:54:00 Yesterday, I received an email from Edwin, an author of NoktahHitam. Guess what, he voluntarily drawn a durian icon for me as a website logo. Well, he said got nothing to do these days that’s why he used his free time to draw such a fantastic durian logo for me. Thank you very much Edwin. I appreciate it very much. Sigh I admit my drawing was very lousy. Probably Edwin had read all my previous post, including Add Icon to Your Address Bar for Blogspot user. He might found out he cannot tahan (control) to see my ugly drawing skill anymore. Wonder when I will spend some time to improve my Photoshop skill, so my blog will looks attractive than the current blog that you’re reading right now. After 1 month plus holiday, finally I can go to school as usual tomorrow, glad to see all my beloved classmate chit-chat via windows live messenger, even though the distance between my classmates just a meter from each other. I miss my college life. I should improve my shoot...

Durian Fruit King
2007-12-09 06:43:00 Durian: The King of Fruit The good durian should have a rich aroma, a silky-smooth flesh texture, succulent but firm flesh and a perfect mix of bitter and sweet tastes. The best quality fruit are the pedigree breeds from Malaysia and Thailand, cultivated specifically to obtain the desired taste and quality. Nameless durians, which are not ...

Durian or Mangrove Research
2007-10-24 11:41:00 I'd especially like to see botanists get involved in these studies. The work could proceed along several lines. Some of our past student scholarship recipients have used fairly simple equipment, I believe Sony NightShot cameras with IR light sources, to monitor flowers fairly close up to document exactly what critters visit them and how they do it, showing that some are basically "thieves" as opposed to truepollinators. Also, exclusion experiments are likely appropriate. We need to document what happens if flowers are not pollinated, versus if they are visited by only certain pollinators. My anecdotal observations indicate that bats will contribute the lion's share of successful pollination, and it is my understanding that these flowers cannot set fruit without pollinators. Such experiments have been designed many times for pollination studies. They just apparently have not been done on durians or Old World mangroves. Obviously, we need some work done where appropriate bat visitor...
Durians
2007-10-01 14:46:00 Lately, I went to my Aunt's house. There they got so many Durians. Oh I really love Durian. I love eating durian because it's not only delicious but they're very nutritious. They got a lot of Durian because it was suppose to be brought to Tandag City but wasn't able to bring it. Well, the owner told them to eat it because it's useless to brought that durian because it will be over ripe if not eaten after 2 days. So we ate a lot of durian until we are full. Then the other durian was given to my cousins and the other to my uncle. Oh I'm sure they'll enjoy eating it. hehe.

Durian soccer anyone?
2007-08-08 18:01:00 Imagine yourself playing soccer as per normal but instead of using a soccer ball, how about a durian instead? These mediums did that and sure they are covered with bloods all over.Claiming that they were possessed by divine spirits, 16 mediums from a local temple in Klang formed a "Malaysian Medium Football Team" on the anniversary of their deity's birthday, using durians as soccer balls as they showed off their football skills. It was definitely not a display for the faint of heart as the mediums played soccer with these heavy fruit covered in prickly thorns. The mediums kicked and passed the fruit to their team mates as if they were real soccer balls.Durian soccer wasn't the only spectacle on the programme. A variety of equally wince-inducing feats carried out by the mediums included using their bodies as chopping boards for slicing up pineapples, breaking open the protective shell of durians with their bare hands, and wrapping themselves up in rolls of lit (and exploding) firecr...

Durian Pudding
2007-08-01 07:28:00 The King of Fruits, Durian, is in season now! The latest craze in Singapore is a durian called 'Cat Mountain King' literally translated from it's Chinese name, ???. This species of durian is creamy, buttery, sweet with a little hint of bitter taste. It's so silky, the meat just slip of the seed! It's definitely worth every cent I paid for (It's the priciest of all durian!). One very bad after effect of eating this durian, other than your breathe smell like durian, is you won't want to eat any other types of durian! Durians, you either love it or hate it. I think it's the pungent smell that people can't handle. Once you get pass the smell ... ahh ... there's no stopping. Not even if you get poked by the thorns on the shells!I didn't use the 'Cat Mountain King' durian to make the pudding. Oh, by the way, the pudding was custard smooth and don't mistaken it as Steam Egg Custard. I used Thai durian and it's a lot more cheaper. Using 'Cat Mountain King' durian would be a...

Durian in Davao City
2006-09-17 17:40:00 I'm finally back in Davao City. This was thanks to another of those one-peso fare tickets on Cebu Pacific I had booked earlier this year. And I'm simply reaping the fruits of my foresight. Hehe! I had taken a flight just a month ago and a lot's changed since then. Imagine what one "terror expert" could do to the entire security system! I knew about the ban on liquids which is why I purposely did not bring any gel, toothpaste and other liquids so that I would not have to check-in my backpack. But I ended up having to check it in because anything with wires is not allowed on hand-carried luggage as well, phone chargers included! As I entered the waiting area, I had to wait a bit since passengers were taking off their shoes for the x-ray. The security personnel also asked us to remove our belts, eyeglasses and everything else in our pockets. Anyway, I guess this is for our safety.I arrived in Davao City at about 5:30 p.m. just in time for dinner. My brod Jepri passed by for me at the...

Craving durian--the King of Fruit!
2006-09-06 09:00:02 Who loves tropical fruit?Alrighty, for those who know Gdog...you know that I love durian. Durian is a tropical fruit that "tastes like heaven but smells like hell."--say what you want about the smell, the taste is second to none. From Wikipedia: "The fruit can grow up to 40 cm long and 30 cm in diameter, and typically weighs one to five kg. The shape of the fruit ranges from oblong to round, the colour of its husk green to brown, and its flesh pale-yellow to red, depending on species. Its hard outer husk is covered with sharp, prickly thorns, and the flesh within emits a strong, distinctive odour. Some regard this odour as fragrant, while the uninitiated often find it overpowering or offensive. The edible portions of the fruit are the custard-like flesh and the seed."Travel and food writer Richard Sterling says: "... its odor is best described as pig-shit, turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock. It can be smelled from yards away. Despite its great local popularity, the raw... |
