Dyslexia: Making a Change
2008-08-07 15:47:00 Scientists at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh recently announced some interesting results of a brain imaging study of dyslexic students and other poor readers. They showed that with intensive remedial instruction, the brain can permanently rewire itself and overcome reading deficits.

Musical Genes? They May Even Tell Us Something About Dyslexia
2008-05-08 20:58:00 As a four year old, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was reported to "play faultlessly and with the greatest delicacy" Behavior like that makes musical talent intriguing and mysterious. Given that certain families produce abundant numbers of musicians, scientists have long suspected that talent in this realm music might have genetic roots. Now research indicates that they may be right. Scientists in Finland say they?ve found approximate locations in our genome where genes affecting musical talent may lie. The findings suggest not only that musical ability is partly genetic but it may share evolutionary roots with language.
Dyslexia and Different Languages
2008-04-28 18:15:00 This month, a fascinating study was reported, showing that dyslexia affects different parts of children's brains depending on whether they are raised reading English or Chinese. The study was conducted by Li-Hai Tan, a professor of linguistics and brain and cognitive sciences at the University of Hong Kong and was reported in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI's), Tan's group studied the brains of students raised reading Chinese. They then compared those findings with similar studies of the brains of students raised reading English.
Do you know why English and Chinese languages affect dyslexia differently?
2008-04-14 16:46:00 Prof. Know Why answers for your general knowledge and awareness: Millions of children worldwide are affected by dyslexia, a language-based learning disability that can include problems in reading, spelling, writing and pronouncing words. According to the International Dyslexia Association, approximately 8 to 15 percent of the students worldwide (if not more) suffer from this problem. But very recently an interesting finding, reported in the online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, opened up a new angle to look at the problem on the whole - Dyslexia affects different parts of children's brains depending on whether they are raised reading English or Chinese. "This finding was very surprising to us. We had not ever thought that dyslexics' brains are different for children who read in English and Chinese," said lead author Li-Hai Tan, a professor of linguistics and brain and cognitive sciences at the University of Hong Kong. "Our finding yields n...

Dyslexia does not apply to Chavs - they're all just thick as fuck..
2008-03-13 16:52:00 So I'm selling my ChavMobile on eBay (I bought it about 3 weeks ago as a cheap thrill to replace my FTO but it proved to be exactly like its owner; a fucking dirty, smelly chav cunt and was fucked from Day 1) and the worst part of it is dealing with a ridiculous amount of inane offers I've been getting off the Chav masses. I've decided that I don't care what excuses chavs in schools give about their learning difficulties, they're all lies and really, they're all just thick as fuck. read more
?Day Dyslexia It Is
2008-02-16 23:43:00 The Georgia Bulldogs put up a great effort against the Volunteers of Tennessee on Saturday afternoon from my dad’s basement the Stegeman Coliseum on the campus of the University of Georgia. From lazy lights to misinformed fans, this game had it all. Another thing it had, was some terrible commentary. Dave Baker, better known as Dave “not good enough to be a full time announcer for Jefferson Pilot Sports, Lincoln Financial Sports football coverage so we’ll leave you on the sideline to check injuries” Baker, decided it’d be funny to announce the game completely opposite of what was actually happening on the floor. Just in case you were watching the game on Raycom Sports and didn’t understand what was going on, here’s a quick rundown of the Dave Baker announcing “code:” Inside = Outside Outside = Inside Tennessee = Georgia Georgia = Tennessee Tyler Smith = JaJuan Smith I’m sure there are more, but somewhere around the mi...

Children With Dyslexia
2007-08-13 14:55:00 Steps In Handling Children With DyslexiaThis sentence, ?I am eating an apple?, sounds very easy to read and comprehend. But if you ask a child who is diagnosed with dyslexia to read that simple sentence, he or she will picture it as one of the most difficult sentences he or she has ever come across.Dyslexia is a mental syndrome that slows down the child?s thinking process. The child will encounter difficulties grasping even the simplest words or sentences. He or she will have troubles speaking and writing too. This health condition usually comes together with another disease called Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), a disease that causes a child to become prone to restlessness.Dyslexia can sometimes be resulted from heredity from a family member. It can strike any child, regardless of age and gender. Hence, this condition should be identified as early as possible, because the older they get, the worse it can be.Let us explore some steps that parents can put into practi...

Dypographical Dyslexia PtII
2006-12-02 15:51:05 At least that's my nickname for it. I'm still a little perplexed about it, and I've been giving it a bit more thought since my last blog on the topic. For those who don't remember (or care to remember) I have this little problem where if I read from a page, I interpret it fine. If I read from a screen, I have a little bit of difficulty (I thank the effect of hours of coding for my computer science minor for this) but this is more to do with my eyes. If I speak a sentence, it's no more jumbled than anyone else (I do "umm and ahh".) When I type, I get quite a few typos and more disturbingly word substitutions. Going over some older material I wrote (circa 2000), this wasn't a problem. The typing accuracy on my old certificate testifies to this. Indeed, I'm thinking the increase in the amount of typing I do by touch has something to do with this. I type a lot faster, but that's because of a change of method. Occasionally, I would look at the keyboard, but now I don't even do t...
