Fish for Good Friday & Earth Day: 7 Myths About Sustainable Seafood
2011-04-22 02:52:00 In honor of fish-eaters on Good Friday and Earth Day, I thought it was appropriate to talk about the confusing area of sustainable seafood. Here's the problem...I'm not a seafood expert. And I don't want you to suspect that anything fishy (sorry) is going on, so I invited a contributor on board (eh) to steer the helm (I'll stop). There's no better fish expert to consult than the very green, very lean and not-at-all mean, Kate Geagan, MS, RD, America's Green Dietitian. Welcome, Kate! 7 Must-Read Myths about Sustainable Seafood In terms of a powerful lever you can push in our food system to tip it towards "sustainable", you can't get much bigger than fish; it lands right up there...

Earth Day Activities
2009-04-22 12:41:00 The Division of Parks and Recreation hooked me up with three trees for my Earth Day tree planting with the Rotary Club of Saipan. Two of the trees were da'ok trees, Calophyllum inophyllum. Do you know the trees lining the road to the Grotto? Those are da'ok trees that we planted in 2006. There are also several large da'ok trees at Sugar King Park. The third tree was a non-native species, the only specimen of its kind growing at Parks & Rec. It is a species of banyon, Ficus religiosa. As far as I know, there are only two trees of this species growing in the CNMI. There is one at the botanical garden in Papago and one growing on Tinian.I went all out for the tree planting today. After digging the holes this morning I took the shovels back to my apartment where I cleaned them and painted them gold. I also bought three big bags of mulch to place around the trees, fertilizer, and bottled water (less salt than tap water). The tree planting took place with the Rotary Club of...

EARTH DAY 2009
2009-04-22 12:13:00 Will you teach your children what we have taught our children? That the Earth is our mother? What befalls the Earth befalls all the sons of the Earth. The Earth does not belong to man, man belongs to the Earth. Every part of the earth is sacred to my people. Every shining pine needle, every sandy shore, every mist in the dark woods, every meadow, every humming insect. All things are connected like the blood that unites us all. Man did not weave the web of life, he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself. One thing we know: our God is also your God. The Earth is precious to Him and to harm the Earth is to heap contempt on its creator. (Chief Seattle)I believe this is the most appropriate song to go with today's post:? what a wonderful world?, by Louis ArmstrongHappy Earth Day to you all and don?t forget thatEARTH DAY IS EVERYDAY!

Veggie Wednesday: Earth Day, 2009
2009-04-22 04:56:00 Today is our 39th Earth Day! This is one of my favorite days of the year. I love this earth we live on and I think it's every single earthling's duty to protect our resources and treat this world kindly. One of my favorite ways to 'go green'.My personal favorite ways to do that are growing my own garden, walking or using public transportation as much as possible, using cloth bags or re-using other bags when shopping, eating organic and local as much as possible, recycling and Freecycling and teaching my kids about how to do these things for themselves. The biggest tip I have for everyone when it comes to the Three R's is this: The first R is REDUCE. Recycling is awesome and re-using is great, but reducing what we use is the first and most important R to be vigilant about.I think sometimes people assume that we are super-poor because the kids use their coats for more than one year (mine has gone on 5 years) and they don't have a different pair of shoes for each day. Guess what? T...

Sablan, Agnes McPhetres, Pete Igitol, Harry Blalock, and Karl Reyes with the 2009 EPA Environmental Award. The EPA Environmental Award belongs to all those who helped support the creation of the Marianas Trench Marine National Monument. I brought the trophy to Rotary Club yesterday to photograph our biggest supporters there.  I hope to get more photos like this with the many environmental champions who helped us last year.******Earth Day brings forth mixed emotions for me. It is a day to celebrate my chosen profession...and I'll leave the other side alone for now.But like I said, today should be a day of celebration. I remember on Earth Day 2004 giving my first public speech at the kickoff rally for the League of Conservation Voters Environmental Victory Project in Florida and gathering signatures for a petition asking the new Rollins College president to support his predecessor's signing of the Talloires Dec...

'Go Doggie Go Green' Dog T-Shirts For Earth Day!
2009-04-11 03:02:00 Even if you are not into the environment, you know that your dog is. Dogs are born nature lovers. If you're not a dog owner, don't worry, the worst is over.

Earth Day: Planting mangroves, saving lives
2008-05-11 10:51:00 The 9 o'clock sun on May 3 began to burn down on those assembled at Angke-Kapuk Nature Recreation Park (TWA Angke-Kapuk) in North Jakarta. The air was becoming hotter and hotter, but this did not wilt the high spirits of the hundreds who had come from the Regina Caely Church Community in Pantai Indah Kapuk and from the Telkom Vocational Senior High School) in Daan Mogot, West Jakarta, to listen to Murni's briefing on mangrove-planting techniques.Sri Lela Murniwati, 64, who is known simply as Ibu Murni, has been working at the TWA Angke-Kapuk since 1998, when she received a decree by then forestry minister Djamaluddin Suryohadikusumo appointing her to manage the 99-hectare coastal park.Murni's entry to reforestation is unique. One day when she visited Benoa, Bali, she saw the lush vegetation of mangroves growing there, and was inspired her to green an area. She began looking for a place in Bali that needed reforestation, but encountered several obstacles in the process. She thus sw...
Attacking Earth Day and a Soap Opera Kiss (and the case of the missing “o,”
2008-05-09 23:31:00 by Mel Seesholtz, Ph.D. The “thinking” of Louis P. Sheldon, founder and chairman of the Traditional Values Coalition, was once again vomited forth in a late April 2008 TVC diatribe titled “Earth Day: The Rantings Of Chicken Little Marxists”: The Earth Day speakers will do what they have done every year since 1970 when the first Earth Day was held: They will trash America as the fountain of all pollution; call for more government regulation of businesses; and continue fighting against energy independence for our nation. Ironically, on the first Earth Day, radical environmentalists were ranting about the alleged coming dangers of “global cooling.” Today, they’re ranting about global warming. So, which is it? As we will see, the jury is still out on how to interpret complex and incomplete scientific data on global climate changes. [italics added] If discredited “Lucky Louie” and the rest of the gnomes at TVC would read something other than their own preposterous propag...

Earth Day - Why Bother?
2008-05-01 00:00:00 In case you missed it, on Earth Day last week Michael Pollan, author of "The Omnivore's Dilemma" and ''In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto," wrote an extraordinary essay that dares to refute the current malaise by some towards Global Warming. It starts out: Why bother? That really is the big question facing us as individuals hoping to do something about climate change, and it's not an easy one to answer. I don't know about you, but for me the most upsetting moment in "An Inconvenient Truth" came long after Al Gore scared the hell out of me, constructing an utterly convincing case that the very survival of life on earth as we know it is threatened by climate change. No, the really dark moment came during the closing credits, when we are asked to . . . change our light bulbs. That's when it got really depressing. The immense disproportion between the magnitude of the problem Gore had described and the puniness of what he was asking us to do about it was enough to sink you...

El Papalote Pre-1st Students Celebrate Earth Day!!
2008-04-29 13:00:00 Last Tuesday, in celebration and appreciation of Earth Day, the students in the Pre-1st class at El Papalote, traveled 30 minutes north, via vans, for a day at La Casa de la Cultura in Puerto Morelos. I was lucky enough to be invited along as chaperone/staff photographer. This was my very first field trip as a mom and I was thrilled that Birdie wanted me to tag along with her and her classmates. I might as well take advantage of the opportunity now. In a few years, she won't want to be seen with her boring/crazy/annoying/totally un-cool mum and her darn camera ;)In preparation for their special project of the day, Miss Kim gathered the students in one of the classrooms and introduced them to the traditional Mexican figurines sculpted of clay called "cuentacuentos", the story-tellers. These small figures can take the shape of a human or an animal and will often have smaller figures attached to it resembling offspring. The figures are often shown...
