EARTHRACE WORLD RECORD START DATE NOW 29TH MARCH
2008-03-01 21:10:00
The Earthrace team has announced they are moving the start of their round the world speed record attempt to 29th March. Earthrace is an incredible 78ft wave-piercing trimaran that runs exclusively on biodiesel. The not for profit project is run as a carbon neutral enterprise, making it one of the world’s most environmentally-friendly powerboats. The crew aim to secure the world speed record, to create greater awareness of the use of biofuel from sustainable sources as part of the solution to counter damage to the environment through fossil fuels, and to promote the need for everyone to lead sustainable lives. Skipper Pete Bethune explains, “We’ve been alerted to the impact that La Nina might have on our round the world record attempt. Bob McDavitt, our MetService Weather Ambassador from New Zealand, has told us that we could risk affecting our progress through the Pacific Ocean if we continue with the original start date of the beginning of March. We also want to ensur...
EarthRace Skipper Slams James Bond Producers
2008-02-12 21:36:00
While 007 may get the ladies, he’s certainly not receiving any praise from environmentalists. The latest slam comes from the skipper of the planet’s fastest eco-boat, Peter Bethune. Last year, he auctioned off his home to fund the £1.5m Earthrace project to beat the round-the-world speed record by powerboat. His 75ft boat run specifically ...

El desafío del Earthrace
2008-01-09 06:48:00
The Earthrace Boat
2007-12-31 15:38:00
The Earth Race boat is a bio-diesel powered boat that runs on human fat and looks like a highly futuristic vessel you?d expect to see on Star Trek. The inventors of the zero carbon boat intend of breaking the current global speed record, planning to take the boat around the world running purely on fat. It ...
Earthrace captain really, um, ?getting into? next biodiesel circumnavigatio
2007-12-21 07:11:00
The first Earthrace attempt ended in defeat back in April. The idea was to circle the globe on a biodiesel-powered boat, but there were just too many problems (and one deadly accident). But, the idea - and boat - are just too cool to be sent into history without a second chance, so the New Zealand team will try again in 2008, trying to beat the circumnavigation record of 74 days, 20 hours and 58 minutes. And, with a little special help from the captain, the second time just might be the charm. The plan is to set sail from from Valencia, Spain at the beginning of March and "traverse the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans as well as the Panama and Suez canals in its more-than-24,000-nautical-mile- journey," according to Fox News. That's similar to the plan from last time. What's new? How about a little bit of fat taken from the captain and turned into biodiesel? The Fox article says:He [Pete Bethune] also made a symbolic gesture towards the project, undergoing liposuction with two ot...
EarthRace Ar0und the World in 65 Days
2007-12-20 11:38:00
This is one mean looking boat and no this is not the latest Batman Boat; although it certainly would not look out of place in the next movie. This is EarthRace, and it is trying to be the fastest eco boat on the planet, by breaking the round the world speed record, using fuel made from bio-diesel. The attempt will start in Valencia in Spain on March 1 2008. They hope to complete the trip in 65 days (current record is 75 days). EarthRace with its net zero carbon-footprint will certainly raise awareness of the environment and the sustainable use of resources.Good luck to themSource: EarthRace
Once More Unto The Breach: Earthrace continues its goal to reach Barbados!
2007-03-30 00:56:00
The Guatemalan court has ruled in favour of Pete Bethune to be freed of charges related to the sad accident earlier this month. The Judge however ruled that the event was in fact an accident, and that no charges should be laid. Earthrace has continually maintained that two major contributors to the accident were that the fishing vessel had no white light, and its crew was asleep at the time of the accident. Immediately preceding the court appearance, Earthrace crew met with the fishermen and their families, and Bethune says it was an extremely emotional experience for all involved... Earthrace -- is en-route to Acapulco, Mexico. Damage sustained in the accident will be repaired in Mexico, then the team will continue with their objective of setting a new world record for a powerboat to circumnavigate the globe.Incredibly enough, Bethune says they will continue to plough onwards for the goal to reach Barbados?Mr Bethune was tonight crossing the Gulf of Tehuantepec at 40kph, headed for...

When last you may have heard about Earthrace - the biodiesel powerboat from New Zealand - is that they were looking at doing it over next year, after the Guatemalan tragedy with the illegal fishing crew... There are now some new developments - The captain of the New Zealand biofuelled vessel, Earthrace, has reached a settlement with the family of a fisherman killed when Earthrace collided with a fishing boat off the Guatemalan coast last week. Peter Bethune details the settlement on his blogsite which is keeping a record of Earthrace's bid to beat the world record for circumnavigating the globe in a bio-fuelled vessel. Now, it seems they may get going again tomorrow, I had emailed the crew and spoke with some of the interests involved - Pete the skipper was glad to hear how some folk along with yours truly on this News-Blog were encouraging them not to surrender; my land-lubber source was observing what you can read for yourself in the Ground Crew's Blog (BTW: There's a vacancy ri...

Earthrace Update: Capt's wife says vessel with Barbados start may abandon q
2007-03-20 11:22:00
There's bad news and good news... In continuing coverage of the ever-saddening plight of the Earthrace a check with a Kiwi website of a radio station there indicates the crew may be forced to drop their pursuit of the bid to circumnavigate the planet in less than two months. Mrs Bethune says on the upside, Guatemalan authorities could be lenient about the collision as new evidence came forward -"Sheryl Bethune says the feeling is that her husband will not be held culpable for the crash, as the fishing boat had no lights on nor any radar equipment operating. She says the crew will be questioned by a Guatemalan judge on Tuesday morning. The crew of the New Zealand powerboat could be detained in Guatemala for up to six months. However, charges have not yet been brought against the Earthrace team. Mr Bethune said on Monday that the damaged powerboat made it to shore on its one remaining engine. He said it was unlikely that Earthrace would continue its bid to circumnavigate the globe."E...

Bananas skin up the Earthrace? Follow-Up!
2007-03-14 21:20:00
It seems when the Earthrace left Barbados bright and early at 7:00 am on 10-3-2007, they may have offended the sea gods, at least that's according to their skipper, who pinned his propeller's break to the wrong fruit on board...-- bananas have been bad luck on shipboard since the days when most boats were powered by sail. That was because bananas give off gases that cause other fruit to ripen and become overripe more quickly - a potential disaster in the days when sailors depended on fruit to prevent scurvy. Bethune said that the person who brought the bananas on board the Earthrace was a landlubber, a passenger who paid to join the first leg of the race.Apparently, the guest's ignorance is what saved him from being keelhauled; JK-JK-JK {just kidding}!Despite the setback as he limps towards Panama, he still is hoping to beat the record of 75 days as the previous record holder did in 1998.**U P D A T E**Earthrace made it to Panama; a distance of just under 1300 nautical miles in ...

Earthrace Limping into First Race PortPanama City, Panama- March 11, 2007---On 10th March, Earthrace started its attempt to set a new world record for a powerboat to circumnavigate the globe. Leaving Barbados at an unofficial time of 12:06:26am (UTC), Earthrace set a course for Panama, some 1250 nautical miles away, however just 16 hours later and the boat has been forced to almost abandon the attempt.Earthrace is running a new kind of carbon propellers that were originally developed for submarines, and they offer reduced vibration and better efficiency compared with conventional blades. The propellers however have struggled with the speeds and loads of Earthrace, and just 16 hours into the first leg have started to fail.At 1am this morning, and over a period of about an hour, there was a steady and progressive increase in vibration. Using a dive light, the team inspected the props, and according to Earthrace Skipper Pete Bethune, "we were staggered by the damage". All the blade...
