News: Crisis in Kenya Impacts Whole East Africa
2008-01-06 18:18:00 Readers of Aid Workers Today saw we have been rather worried about the wider and longer term post-election violence in Kenya. Not that I underestimate the shame of hundreds who died in violent street clashes, including dozens burned alive as they sought refuge in a church. But there is more to the conflict than what one can actually see on television.First of all, an estimated 250,000 Kenyans are now estimated to have been displaced by post-electoral violence, which, in many places, has an ethnic dimension to it. Some 5,400 Kenyans sought refuge in neighbouring Uganda. The UN estimates between 400,000 and 500,000 people have been affected by the conflict. That in itself constitutes a new and major humanitarian crisis aid agencies are scrambling to deal with. The direct cost to Kenyan economy is figured at $31 million USD a day, according to Vice President Moody Awori, due to many businesses having to close during the unrest and foreign governments advising their citizens against trav...

East African Safari Rally: Lloyd gets assurance.
2007-08-24 00:00:00 Click on the picture to enlarge To be sure that his Datsun 240Z is in top form for the Kenya Airways Safari Classic 2007, John Lloyd has been out in Kenya testing it on typical roads. John Lloyd has participated in both the previous editions of the Classic Safari and is likely to be a strong contender for outright victory this year. On his first Kenya Airways Safari Classic in 2003, he rolled his Ford Escort on the very last day while lying a creditable fifth overall. On the last Classic Safari in 2005, he finished third overall in a Porsche 911. Preparations are certainly hotting up for the Kenya Airways Safari Classic with many competitors taking the opportunity to test or try their cars in Kenya and Tanzania. After his run in the car, Lloyd commented "I am very happy with the set up of the Datsun 204Z and I hope to challenge for top honours this year"
East African Safari Rally: A late entry ?
2007-08-24 00:00:00 Click on the picture to enlarge The organisers of the Kenya Airways Safari Classic have just completed another weeklong recce of the route in the course of which, a prospective entrant approached Surinder Thatthi, the Event Director, at the Naivasha Sopa Lodge. Strolling onto the lawn, the gentleman enquired whether there was a place for a late entry. Informed that there was not, he took a few mouthfuls of grass and headed off for the swimming pool. Certainly, if the sole requirement needed to win rallies were to have a heavy right foot, then this chap would have been a formidable rival for ex-World Champions, Björn Waldegård and Stig Blomqvist. Though accommodating him in the front seat of a rally car could have presented a bit of a problem ? Fortunately the kind of obstacles that the team found on the recce were of the normal rally kind like a ford created by recent rains in the Kerio Valley (see attached photo) while the large animal brigade kept themselves at a discreet distan...

Rwanda: Rwanda, Knowledge Economy, and the East African Community
2007-07-01 12:21:00 Why is Rwanda’s membership in the East African Community important to ICT practitioners in the region?: “This is because Rwanda was developing its ICT industry before its regional neighbours had an inkling of the potential and competitive edge ICT gives nations. Rwanda has a knowledge-based economy that is only matched in the region by Mauritius,” ...
Suicide bomb in Nairobi:Al Qaeda in East Africa?
2007-06-11 11:39:00 A bomb went off in Kenya’s capital of Nairobi, two blocks from where the 1998 suicide bombing killed so many. So far, only a few people were reported killed, but news is still sketchy. The UKGuardian reports a man dressed suspiciously tried to enter a restaurant, and was stopped before the explosion. John Lloyd returns to East African Safari Classic in a 240Z.
2007-06-04 00:00:00 City of London insurance broker, John Lloyd has entered this year?s East African Safari Classic rally in his classic car, a Datsun 240Z, lent to him by former Datsun/Nissan works driver and organiser of the Classic Safari in 2003/5, Mike Kirkland. This will be Lloyd?s third entry in the classic rally and it will also be the third different make of car that he has driven. In the 2005 event, Lloyd took a formidable fourth place in a Porsche 911, and in 2003 he was one of the leading contenders in a Ford Escort until he crashed on the final leg and the car went up in flames. Partnering Lloyd will be Paul Amandini who has co-driven with Lloyd on those two Safari Classics. The 240Z is the same car that four times ex-world champion, Juha Kankkunen, drove on the 2005 event. ?I haven?t driven a 240Z before but I?m excited about the challenge,? says Lloyd. ?I?ve known Mike [Kirkland] for many years and it was an offer I couldn?t refuse. For Paul and I, the event?s always has been a great e...
East African Safari Classic rally: Shock ! Perana bitten by woman
2007-05-29 00:00:00 For some entrants, the adventure that is all part of the Kenya Airways Safari Classic has started already. Richard-Martin Hurst has done both previous Safari Classics, the first in a Rover P5 V8 and the second in another V8 engined car, a Ford Capri Perana and the Perana is being readied for its second attempt at the Safari. In fact, until a short time ago, the Perana was ready to go off to Africa since Richard?s co-driver and preparation expert, Tony Devantier, was leaving England to go to live in Australia and had done everything necessary on the car before he left. Then the night before he was due to fly off, a certain lady driver lost control of her vehicle outside Richard?s house and managed to regain control by driving her car into the side of the Perana. As Richard commented, he felt it was particularly galling that ?having done two London to Sydney rallies, a Safari Rally, the Midnight Sun to Red Sea, plus Evo Africa and Evo Kalahari in this car without bending it, this ha...

Youngest ever team for East African Safari Classic Rally
2007-05-15 00:00:00 Click on the picture to enlarge Don't miss the East African Safari rally Classic Pictures Gallery. With their eyes firmly fixed on a finish rather than outright victory, Quentin Mitchell and Russell Savage have entered the Kenya Airways Safari Classic with the double aim of raising money for needy children in Kenya and showing that two young men can make a serious attempt on a major international rally in a classic car that is more than eighteen years older than they are. The car that they have chosen is a British sports car from the 1960s, a Triumph GT6. Nicknamed ?the poor man?s Jaguar E-type? when it was launched in 1966, the GT6 was based on the 4-cyl 1,200cc Triumph Spitfire fitted with a 6-cyl 2-litre engine from the Triumph Vitesse. The model that Quentin and Russell will use is Mk2 GT6 which is the form in which the Triumph factory prepared a prototype known as the GT6R to race at Le Mans. It never competed in the 24 hour race ,but the development work done led to raci...
54 classic cars to take part to the East African Safari Classic Rally
2007-05-02 00:00:00 With more than six months to go before the start of the Kenya Airways East African Safari Classic Rally in Mombasa on November 25th, the number of entries has hit the target set by Event Director, Surinder Thatthi. Fifty-four crews have signalled their intention to compete and the last four to be received have been put on a reserve list. ?I am simply delighted with the response from rally drivers all over the world who want to be part of the amazing tradition that is the Safari Rally.? said Surinder Thatthi this morning. ?I am especially pleased that the confidence shown in the event by Kenya Airways has helped to attract such a talented and diverse entry. It means that in November we will surely have a truly classic event.? The entry list contains two ex-World Rally Champions from Sweden ? Björn Waldegård and Stig Blomqvist ? and has attracted drivers from Australia, Belgium, Austria, South Africa, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Japan, the USA and Britain as well as from Tanz...
Preparing a classic car for the East African Safari Classic
2007-04-27 00:00:00 Click on the picture to enlarge A lot of work... To enter and prepare one car for the East African Safari Classic is quite a task. There are several teams who are preparing three classic cars and rightly look upon that as major effort. But one organisation from Britain is undertaking a truly Herculean task by preparing and running no fewer than six cars in this tough African event come November. Francis Tuthill?s name is synonymous with Porsche and thus it is not surprising that his company?s involvement with the 2007 Safari Classic centres on six Porsche 911s. On the previous two events, in 2003 and 2005, Tuthill Porsches have come very close to taking top honours. In 2003, Richard Tuthill navigated for BRDC Chairman, Stuart Rolt and their Porsche 911 took third place, while in 2005, Frederic Dor and John Lloyd finished third and fourth respectively in their Tuthill Porsches. This time, it is Dor who once again heads the Tuthill Porsche armada using the same 3.0 litre 911 on m...
EAST AFRICA: Region unveils tougher measures to fight malaria
2007-04-26 11:02:00 The following article was seen on IRIN NEWS and highlights the arguments about using DDT for vector control. I’ve read quite a lot about this recently. The main protagonists against targetted spraying (we are NOT talking about indiscriminate crop spraying) are the very countries who used DDT the most, incidentally dealing with their own mosquito ...
