Ronald Reagan's Former Home in East Sacramento
2012-05-07 07:00:00
Spring is in full bloom in Sacramento, which makes May a perfect time to tour homes of East Sacramento and admire the delightful, whimsical spring gardens. It amazes me that many people think the capital of California is Los Angeles. Even in my adopted state of 35 million residents, some of them, if asked to quickly name the capital, draw a blank. And half of those who do realize that the capital is Sacramento don't know where it is. Just for the record, Sacramento is located approximately 90 minutes north and east from San Francisco. Sacramento is in the Central Valley, tucked at the confluence of the largest river in the state, the Sacramento River, with its tributary, the American River. Located just south of the American River and east of Midtown is a delightful community known as East Sacramento. It's within walking distance of downtown. Many of the homes were built in the 1920s and 1930s, and are filled with Old World vintage details such as curved archways, stained an...

Nor'easter to bring heavy rain and snow to U.S. East

(Reuters) - Heavy rains and snow will soon pound the eastern United States, possibly leading to downed trees, power outages and flight delays as a low pressure system from the Gulf of Mexico moves through the region, meteorologists said on Saturday. Intense precipitation from the Nor'easter storm will start on Sunday, with two to four inches of downpour expected along the Mid-Atlantic Coast, which will make for soggy conditions in New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. ...
All Eyes East On Marketing To China’s Youth. I Liked It.
2012-04-21 17:29:00
I spend pretty much all day reading for work and so when I read during my off-hours, I tend to prefer fun and light. And this is especially true of work related books. And let’s get real here and put away the pretension. Most businesspeople want a book that they can both start and finish on their flight to China. Yes, Jonathan Spence’s, The Search for Modern China is a great book, but it is 992 pages, and if you are talking about ROI per page, then something like Jeffrey Wasserstrom’s book, China in the 21st Century, is more realistic. That book is accurately subtitled “What Everyone Needs to Know” and it is 192 pages, which means you can read it on the plane between meals. For my full review of Wasserstrom’s book, check out “China In The 21st Century. The Book You Must Read. At Minimum/For Starters.” And when it comes to business books on China, I am even more impatient. I am a lawyer and so when I read a business book on China, I am reading ...

The Marlins will break in their new ballpark tonight when they host theCardinalsand the regular season gets started in earnest. Here are some links from the NL East... The Mets "have taken a step backward in the short term" Mike Puma of the New York Post writes in his season preview. Puma points out that David Wright will look to prove himself worthy of an extension and suggests pitching prospect Matt Harvey could be called up by July. Mets VP of player development and amateur scouting Paul DePodesta took questions in a Baseball Prospectus chat yesterday and explained that he'll be thrilled if Harvey and Zack Wheeler become dependable starters in the Major Leagues. "If they do, we'll be happy with the results in the long run," DePodesta added. Commissioner Bud Selig told Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post that the Nationals are generating lots of buzz this spring. "In terms of people talking about a club that is clearly coming on, it?s the Nationals,? Selig said. The co...

NL East Predictions
2012-04-02 14:00:00
Its finally arrived! The 2012 Major League Baseball season is set to kick off in just a few short days. Unfortunately, the Mets find themselves in what could very well be the most difficult division in baseball. This year more than ever, due to their limited depth in almost every facet of the roster, the Mets results will be dependent upon their health. Ultimately, this is how I see things in the NL East panning out:1st) Philadelphia PhilliesAs a die hard Mets fan it pains me greatly to write this, but until someone beats them the Phillies will remain the class of the NL East.  Yes, they are getting old.  However, the Phillies rotation still sports two of the top five pitchers in baseball in Cliff Lee and Roy Halliday.  Backing them up are Cole Hamels (who is in a contract year) and youngster Vance Worley.  Still the best rotation in baseball by most accounts.  The addition of Jonathan Papelbon will sure up the closer's spot, after the roller coaster ri...

I just fell in love with this city, which?s old part is directly at the sea, only the road is more near! Here the people live a more simply life than in Beirut. Yet they are so kind and funny, helpful citizens. When you get here, you should never miss to dive into the souk, where you might get set back by it hundreds of years. Yeah, and when you are like me, who is quite sensitive for energy in the air, the magic lying in it, so welcome to the old Saida, which the Phoenician had called Sydwn. via Saida ? Last year, the UConn Huskies men's basketball team set New York ablaze with their Big East Tournament run on their way to the NCAA Championship. On Thursday afternoon, the Syracuse Orange were looking to end the Huskies fortunes in NYC. When UConn went cold late in the second half, the Orange used an 8-0 run to take control as they held on for a 58-55 win over the Huskies in front of a packed house at Madison Square Garden on Thursday afternoon. The Huskies (20-13) now wait until Sunday night to find out where they'll go in the NCAA Tournament (yes folks, they are in). Syracuse (31-1) awaits the winner of Georgetown/Cincinnati in the semifinals. Shabazz Napier led the way for the Huskies with 15 points. Andre Drummond added a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds while Jeremy Lamb was held to 10 points. Tyler Olander had a nice game off the bench with four points, eight rebounds and four assists. Dion Waters paced the Orange with 18 points while both Kris Joseph and James Sou...

Cedars to the East: A Study of Modern Lebanon ? Student Pulse
2012-03-05 20:25:00
Solving the political problems faced by Lebanon is no easy task. With deep, internal conflicts that date far back and are still tied to a political system imposed by a colonial power, Lebanon?s democracy is delicate to say the least. Besieged constantly by foreign influences and powers, (France, Syria, Israel, Iran, and Saudi Arabia, just to name a few) Lebanon?s sovereignty has never been fully stable, preventing the country from developing and adopting a political system based around its preferences, not the preferences of others. via Cedars to the East: A Study of Modern Lebanon – Student Pulse.

This preview was sculpted over a two month period in the off season with some mild tweaking as we went along prior to publication.  It comes from a culmination of reading many baseball magazines, periodicals, articles and websites. I hope you enjoy this look at the upcoming season.  I know everyone will not agree with me and that?s fine put it in the comments or hit me up on Twitter.  I can assure you I'll most likely have an argument for each and every objection that you could possibly raise. Yesterday we looked at the NL East, Sunday was the ...
2011-12 Big East Women?s Basketball Regular Season Awards
2012-03-02 00:40:00
While we have to wait until 5 p.m. on Friday for the big awards, the Big East Conference announced four awards plus the All-Big East teams. And as you would expect, there's a distinct UConn Huskies women's basketball flavor to the teams. Senior Tiffany Hayes was named to the All-Big East First Team and is joined by her teammate sophomore Bria Hartley. Freshman Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis was named to the All-Big East Second Team. KML also picked up the Big East Sixth Man Award and should win Freshman of the Year honors tomorrow. She and Kiah Stokes were named to the All-Big East Freshman Team. There was one other member of the Huskies honored for her play and that was sophomore Stefanie Dolson who received honorable mention honors. Given what Kelly Faris does for the Huskies on a nightly basis, I'm really shocked she was not recognized by the coaches in the conference. The Big East Player of the Year, Big East Freshman of the Year, Big East Coach of the Year and Big East Scholar-Athle...

Oakland Blogosphere Withering? East Bay Express Article Full Of Crap
2012-03-01 21:22:00
I should have known better than to take the call of East Bay Express writer Rachel Swan, who was writing an article that not only looked narrowly at Oakland bloggers who were given awards for blogging on the Oakland Mayor’s Race (not so much local issues), but seems to say that because many of the (Read More...)

Four New Dangers in the Middle East
2012-02-28 15:13:00
Ever since I was born in 1946, the Middle East has been at the core of the most enduring, most vexing, and most economically impactful conflicts on Earth. The region has generated eight major wars, scores of lesser skirmishes, plus a cascade of political assassinations, acts of terror and revolutions. It has triggered at least four global economic upheavals. It has repeatedly caused chaos in the world’s most advanced industrial nations.
