Mt. Bromo & Semeru, A Spectacular Volcanic Landscape in East Java
2008-07-12 19:15:00
The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park covers some 800 square kilometers in the centre of East Java. It is the largest volcanic region in the province and there stands Mt. Semeru, which rises 3676 meters above sea level. At its northern end is the spectacular Tengger Caldera, Java's largest, with its 10 km barren desert-like sea of sand. Within the caldera rise the deeply fissured volcanic cones of Batok and Bromo, the latter is still active with a cavernous crater from which smoke blows skyward. Temperatures at the top of mount Bromo range about 5 to 18 degrees Celcius . To the south is a rolling upland plateau dissected by valleys and dotted with several small scenic lakes, extending to the foot of Mount Semeru, a towering grey forest-skirted cone dominating the southern landscape.Tengger sandy area has been protected since 1919, and its believed to be the only conservation area in Indonesia, even probably in the world possessing a unique ocean and sand at the attitude about 2...

Tom Gonzales - Commerce One Founder Sues East Bay Community Foundation
2008-06-22 13:04:00
(Story reposted at the request of our own Robin Belker..) Tom Gonzales, the co-founder of Commerce One, has filed a lawsuit to against East Bay Community Foundation of Oakland and to regain control of his son's charitable bequest in order to ensure that the tens of millions of dollars are spent as the younger Tom Gonzales wished. In this, the image of the East Bay Community Foundation has been damaged. The East Bay Community Foundation was originally the receiver of a bequest of $23 million from the Gonzales Foundation, and it was to be controlled by EBCF. But distribution of the money has been on hold until various tax claims involving the Gonzales estate are resolved. In a kind of fit, EBCF elected to sue the family just because EBCF has not received all of the money due to the tax matter. I guess they forgot who it belonged to. But in doing this, the reputation of the East Bay Community Foundation has been damaged because it seems like an awardee can't trust the East Bay Co...

Movie Review: Heroes Of The East
2008-06-11 04:24:00
I don?t think I?ve ever enjoyed ballet.  The whole art of people moving in graceful ways fails to move me.  However, when I see a really well choreographed fight scene, particularly in a kung-fu movie, that is something which stands a much greater chance of leaving me amazed.  Now there is a new chance available ...

Foreign intervention in Middle East
2008-06-10 19:21:00
PressTV's Middle East Today takes a look at the effects of foreign mediation in Middle East disputes. Is it time for the West to bow out, and let the region sort out its own problems?Iraq?s Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is on his third official visit to Tehran since taking office ? and his second this year. High on the agenda in his meetings with foreign ministry officials, the president and leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyid Ali Khamanei, are the plans by Washington to forge a long term strategic relationship with Iraq ? a status of forces agreement ? or SOFA. Critics of the deal say it would reduce Iraq to the level of a vassal state of the US, and a base for US military adventures in the region. Maliki has assured his neighbor that Iraq will not become a base for threats against Tehran. But even if a watered down version of the SOFA security pact goes through ? and all indications are that it will - these are promises that Maliki is hardly in a po...

Scouting the NL East
2008-06-07 23:26:00
BY ADAM RONIS ATLANTA BRAVES Buy low -- Mark Teixeira: His numbers are decent, but not what you expect from a top-20 player. He is batting .279 with nine home runs and 43 RBIs. The power is coming, so buy fast before he takes off. Sell high -- Chipper Jones: There's no doubt he is one of the best hitters in the game. A .421 average proves it. He has walked 37 times and struck out just 23. The one thing he doesn't have is a triple. Ok, I'm looking through a magnifying glass to find a negative and that's all I see. He likely won't hit .400 all season, but he could stay hot for most of the season. It's really tough to deal him right now, but he remains an injury risk. Look at the games played since 2004: 137, 109, 110, 134. It's a concern. I'm not saying trade him. But if you are afraid of injury, he could get you a lot. Pickup -- Jorge Campillo: He's still stretching his arm out after spending most of the season as a reliever. He is 2-0 as a starter and lasted just four inn...
41 Waller - East Austin condos

Waller 41 - Type: "Cool Type" Condo conversion. Near Downtown +9 Appreciation +10, Proximity to UT +8, Deal potential +8, Proximity to coolness +7.5, Features +8, Green features +5 . I really like east Austin. There are several projects that I've been watching over there too. Waller 41 is one of them. It's cute, spacious and in the heart of everything. One of the more interesting features is the lack of a tub replaced by a stand up shower that you'll have to see for yourself. It works, but something feels a little off. Otherwise for under $300K, you get a pretty good buy. This blog is the personal opinion of Perry Henderson, a local realtor in Austin. Scouting the AL EAST
2008-06-06 23:27:00
BY ADAM RONIS BALTIMORE ORIOLES Buy low -- Nick Markakis: He has 10 homers and 27 RBIs and eight stolen bases, but has just 11 doubles and a .272 average with 55 strikeouts in 217 at-bats. Those aren't terrible numbers for a guy who is a perrenial second-half player. Markakis had 14 home runs and 61 RBIs with a .325 average in the second half last season. Sell high -- George Sherrill: The closer position is very volatile. He already has 20 saves, but has a 25/14 K/BB ratio in 26 2/3 innings. Not saying he will slow down, but his value is at its peak and a team desperate for saves might overpay. Pickup -- Radhames Liz:He had a 4.05 ERA in the minors, but had a 2.39 ERA in his last five minor league starts. He throws in the mid-90s and has good stuff. He struck out 58 in 60 innings. He was called up to start June 3 against the Twins and went 5 1/3 innings, allowing four hits, two runs, one walk and struck out four. BOSTON RED SOX Buy low -- Josh Beckett: Focus on his 4.07 ERA, 11 ho...
Around the AFC East: Week Three (NE)
2008-06-06 22:31:00
In our final weekly installment of Around the AFC East, MaPatsFan joins us to discuss a player whose absence was felt for much of the beginning of the Patriots' season in 2007: DE Richard Seymour.     Injuries and only having to play for two quarters in most games caused Richard Seymour to have an un-Seymour-like 2007 season.  At age 28, is Seymour primed to rebound to his old self in '08 and restore prominence to a strong Patriots defensive line?     Pats Pulpit: Seymour is, without a doubt, the best defensive lineman the Pats have.  Possibly considered one of the best in the NFL (5 straight pro bowls to prove it), yeah it was a huge loss not to have him 100% in 2007.  Because the Pats run a 3-4, they don't typically rush their DEs, preferring to leave that to the OLBs.  Seymour's experience and size (6-6, 310 lbs) means he fits perfectly in a 3-4 DL situation, closing up holes and jamming up offensive lineman.  Add to tha...
Around the AFC East: Week Three (NYJ)
2008-06-06 19:00:00
We're back with Part Two of today's Around the AFC East feature, in which we interview - and are subsequently interviewed by - our most heated rivals' bloggers.  Joining us now is Brian Bassett of The Jets Blog, who is here to discuss the Jets' new big man anchoring their 3-4 defense:     You've spoken about Alan Faneca and Tony Richardson as important off-season additions for the Jets (and I'm not disputing that), but I thought by far their most interesting import was NT Kris Jenkins.  Can Jenkins stay healthy enough to play your defense's most important position for the foreseeable future?  Do you see him having an impact?     The Jets Blog: The contract that the team put in place with Jenkins has many incentive bonuses and one specifically where he is weighed over 10 times a year to make sure that he's no higher than 360 pounds.  Jenkins has responded well to the incentive and has been keeping his weight where the team wa...
Around The AFC East: New York Jets
2008-06-06 17:13:00
For the final installment of this week's "Around the AFC East," it's time to talk Jets. And for that, we turn to Brian Bassett of The Jets Blog: Matty I: As we inch towards training camp, what position (other than the QB competition) concerns you the most at this point in time? Brian B: Right Tackle.  The team signed former Lion and Patriot Damien Woody to 5 year - $25 million deal.  Woody lost his job at Guard last year but played well when they subbed him at Right Tackle after an injury.  For the Jets in 2007, Anthony Clement let up more than nine sacks, so you'd hope that anything would be better than that, but it seems to be something that people are just glossing over and assuming the line will be excellent. My Take: That's exactly what I would have said as well.  I think the Jets' offensive line will be improved, but Woody as a starting right tackle would worry me, too.  However, I didn't realize Clement allowed that many sacks.  Woody sh...
Around the AFC East: New England Patriots
2008-06-06 14:30:00
Back with round two of this week's "Around the AFC East." It's time to talk Patriots.  And to do that is MaPataFan from Pats Pulpit: Matty I: I know I asked about the secondary last time, but two players in particular I have questions about.  Rodney Harrison is entering the final year of his contract.  What kind of contribution do you expect from him in '08 and do you think he'll be back beyond this season?  Also, last year's 1st round pick, Brandon Meriweather, has been rumored to possibly switch from safety to corner.  What do you expect his role to be this season and will be make the kind of impact that a former 1st round pick should make entering year #2? MaPatsFan: Harrison is 35 and, as you state, in the last year of his contract.  Even though he's been a huge asset to the team (and sometimes distraction, re: HGH), Belichick would not renew his contract in a heartbeat if he wasn't making the grade.  It's even questionable whether he...
Around the AFC East: Week Three (MIA)
2008-06-06 12:44:00
In the wake of the very latest information surrounding Marshawn Lynch's legal trouble (see above FanShot), we'll continue on with our weekly Friday feature of Around the AFC East.  At the very least, our little exercise might provide y'all with a distraction - but, of course, feel free to continue the discussions on Lynch as well. We'll start off this week's feature with Matty I from The Phinsider:    With Bill Parcells and his new regime in town, what is the 2008 prognosis for RB Ricky Williams?  Does he or does he not make the team?  Can he be a contributor under Parcells/Ireland/Sparano's direction?    The Phinsider: Ah, yes.  Ricky Williams.  First, let me be honest.  I love Ricky.  I really do.  Despite his troubles, he's a genuinely good person who I really wish the best after his football life.  And he's quite entertaining.  I love his most recent quote, when asked about his NFL legacy.  ...

Around the AFC East: Buffalo Bills
2008-06-06 06:15:00
It's Friday, so it's time to go around the AFC East. To kick things off today is Brian Galliford of Buffalo Rumblings: Matty I: You said that you knew it was coming, and here it is.  What do you make of this Marshawn Lynch "potential hit and run" situation and how would the Bills cope with losing Lynch for any matter of games?  And how big of a distraction is this right now for Lynch and the entire Bills organization? Brian G: It's difficult to discuss at this point because there's so little factual material surrounding the incident.  Lynch still hasn't spoken with Buffalo police, who continue to investigate the situation.  All I can say is this - the signs are pointing to Lynch being the driver, and if that turns out to be true, he could face up to a year in jail time (it's a misdemeanor crime).  The football deities know that I hope I'm wrong on that speculation. All we get from team responses are the generic "no comment" and team media - so the re...

A brand new powers in a brand new middle East "1-2"
2008-06-05 21:25:00
This is a brand new Middle East for sure that suits a brand new world , another step towards the new middle East where the Usually leading countries are substituted with other countries in the leading place,it is not about dictatorship regimes and minorities . In the last 20Th century Egypt and Saudi Arabia were the leading the countries in the Middle East, Egypt was the first then Saudi Arabia was the second , then in the last 27 blessed years the roles were switched especially in the last two years , Saudi Arabia became the leader and we are the follower , of course both were following the American Orders blindly. Saudi Arabia was always the faithful ally for the United States ,so it is not a surprise , Egypt has its own ups and downs with America since the revolution or the coup of 1952 "it was actually the first one to be backed by the American administration then in the region" Any how it seems that the United States got bored from these two dictatorship corrupte...

2008-06-05 03:16:00
I love many of Kanye West?s song, and his newest single, Flashing Lights, is one of those songs that I love to listen these days. Kanye happens to be a Christian too, and that is evident in some of his songs. With that, I love him more, because he?s not all about those dirty, non-sense raps. He sings songs not for the sake of having his songs, but to convey important feelings and thoughts to his [[ This is a content summary only. Around the AFC East: Week Two Recap
2008-05-30 22:30:00
Week Two of our newest feature, "Around the AFC East", is in the books.  I hope all of you are enjoying our weekly interviews with three outstanding "enemy" bloggers in Matty I (The Phinsider), MaPatsFan (Pats Pulpit) and Brian Bassett (The Jets Blog).  The purpose of these interviews is not just to learn a bit more about the Buffalo Bills' biggest rivals; we're hoping to keep the chemicals of football pumping through your veins in these boring off-season days, as well. Today, we discussed quarterback controversies in New York and Miami and the Patriots' rushing attack - feel free to continue those discussions in their respective posts.  Here's what went on at the rest of the excellent blogs involved: Over at The Phinsider:   I discuss the most overrated and underrated Bills players, from a national media perspective.   MaPatsFan breaks down the massive changes the Pats went through at the CB position.   Bassett talks about the Jets' stable of (re...
