JUST TALK: THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM & EASTERN PROMISES
2008-01-29 02:05:00 Just a short post regarding a couple of movies #1 and I've recently seen. We're big Netflix fans so we have a constant flow of movies arriving in our mailbox. Our most recent DVD was of The Bourne Ultimatum. This is the third in the Bourne series and ranks in that place behind the other two, The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy. If I was giving corkscrew ratings I'd have to give the first one 5 Corkscrews, the second 4 and this last one 3. My major complaint, I guess, about the Ultimatum was that it felt like one long chase scene from the start of the movie to the end. They filmed in a lot of beautiful locations but it is hard to see much at the speed this movie moves in. I'm sure the fourth edition can't be far behind but I'm beginning to wonder how many rogue CIA-types there can be. 2008-01-20 01:19:00 Eastern Promises, David Cronenberg's latest, tells the story of a nurse who gets herself into trouble by being determined to help find the family of a baby which is left in her hands. Traces lead her to the Russian maffia and soon she finds herself in the middle of a dangerous world of betrayal and murder. Overall Eastern Promises kind of feels a bit old fashioned and it's definitely one of those films you either love or hate. The film's setting and style very much remind of the past. Bad guys' throats are cut with fake blood sipping out and running down their necks. A sequence in a sauna ends in a small massacre after providing you with some nice thrills. Cronenberg has made a nice and solid crime drama set in London. Viggo Mortensen is ruthless as the Russian Nikolai, portraying a man you most certainly don't want to cross paths with. 2007-10-28 17:38:00 David Cronenberg, the director behind such infamously disturbing flicks as 'Scanners', 'Rabid', 'Dead Ringers' and 'Videodrome', has switched genres lately. I suppose the cross-over from horror to thriller probably started with the psychological thriller, 'Spider', but with the graphic novel adaptation, 'A History of Violence', the change was explicit. Now with 'Eastern Promises', a tale of the Russian Mafia in London, he continues his foray into crime and that most criminal of genres, the gangster movie. Not that Cronenberg has toned down the disturbing imagery. In one notably humorous scene, Viggo Mortensen's Nikolai asks those around him to leave the room while he removes all identifying characteristics, eg. teeth and fingers, from a corpse. The audience are not given such an opportunity. I?ve written about movies numerous times in the past although it generally involved movie quotes, the Oscars or a debate about the genius of Kevin Costner. Anyway, over the weekend, I saw the movie ?Eastern Promises? starring Viggo Mortensen and Naomi Watts. Although this movie has been out a few weeks, I have heard very little about it except for positive reviews from BDK on the Junkies and my friend Chris. According to the October 5-7 box office numbers, "Eastern Promises" finished 11th this weekend with slightly less than $2.1 million. Compare that to "Mr. Woodcock" that finished in 9th place earning $2.3 million. Now in its fourth week in theatres, Eastern Promises has only made about $14.5 million in cumulative gross, so this is obviously not going to be Titanic or even The Kingdom (that?s the current movie where The Rock is a quarterback who learns he has a daughter; the daughter grows up to kidnap approxim...

This isn't some gasp over how great it is or due to shock or anything, but for whatever reason, it just doesn't leave me overflowing with criticism (in the general sense). This may be a lacking on my part to be able to successfully apply critical thinking to all mediums and articles, or perhaps it's a flaw in the film that it just doesn't give you much material in terms of theme or tone. Or maybe it's just because sometimes I'm content admiring the quiet beauty that comes with watching Patrick Swayze perform martial artsy yoga in Roadhouse.Eastern Promises is one of these films that leaves me lacking a response.
