Ford Unveils Smallest and Most Efficient EcoBoost Engine Yet
2009-09-18 21:34:00 In keeping with their plan to rely heavily on the EcoBoost engine line up, Ford has introduced another variant of the potent powerplant. This time, the turbocharged engine displaces a total of 1.6 liters, making it the smallest and possibly the most widely used for the upcoming model years.
EcoBoost 1.6 liter engine features central direct injection
2009-09-15 14:22:00 Ford's new 1.6 liter EcoBoost engine features Central Direct Injection, where the injector is located in the top of the combustion chamber, pointing down - rather than to the side as in conventional Direct Injection. The 1.6 liter EcoBoost was announced today at the Frankfurt show, but this detail was not. It is shown clearly in the Ford Press-supplied image below, to the left of the spark plug. Note the corresponding depression in the piston directlyk below. Central Direct Injection, the next step in the evolution of Direct Injection for petrol engines, is also used in the new Jaguar 5 liter DOHC V-8 engine. It's benefits include even more precise fuel metering and burn, yielding better emissions, economy, and performance.
Ford introduces 3 more EcoBoost engines in Frankfurt
2009-09-15 14:01:00 Ford has released the first details of three more EcoBoost engines. We'll see at least two in North America in the next two model years. Ford Press Release follows: FRANKFURT, 15 September, 2009 -- Ford of Europe is revealing further details of its new generation of Ford EcoBoost high-efficiency low-CO2 four-cylinder petrol engines at the Frankfurt Motor Show, prior to their first production applications in 2010. EcoBoost 2 liter - what happened to the power?
2009-07-25 20:14:00 A press release from Ford's press release announcing the Explorer America concept describes the horsepower and torque the 2 liter EcoBoost was originally envisioned to produce: "A powertrain lineup that includes a 4-cylinder 2-liter engine with EcoBoost technology delivering 275 hp and 280 lb.-ft. of torque or, as a premium engine, a 3.5-liter V-6 delivering about 340 hp. Depending on engine selection, fuel-efficiency will improve by 20 to 30 percent versus todays V-6 Explorer " The 3.5 liter EcoBoost went up - the 2 liter EcoBoost went down to 230/240 (per last week's announcement). What happened?
Ford Officially Confirms Four Cylinder EcoBoost Engine
2009-07-22 23:45:00 Ford's EcoBoost engine has gained quite a bit of popularity since first being introduced. Offering performance comparable to that of a V8 while also returning fuel economy more akin to an inline four engine, what's not to love? Now, Ford has decided to expand on the EcoBoost line by including a four cylinder version that will not only provide outstanding fuel economy, but also offer a sport oriented powerplant for many small vehicles.
Ford EcoBoost 4-cylinders
2009-07-22 03:41:00 Ford also reported today that the upcoming EcoBoost 2 liter 4-cylinder engine will products at least 230 HP and 240 torque. This is strange news - it had been previously reported that this engine would produce 275 HP. What happened? In any case, the engine will be out some time in 2010 - it wasn't said whether it would be for the 2010 model year or 2011. It's also known that the EcoBoost 1.6 liter engine is a bit further out, and is targeted for 180 HP/ 180 torque. EcoBoost Summary Size HP Torque HP/liter 1.6 180 180 &nbs-p; 1.13 2.0 230 240 &nbs-p; 1.15 3.5 355 350 &nbs-p; 1.01
Lincoln MKS EcoBoost - another reason why Lincoln should have kept the LS
2009-05-14 20:36:00 The 2010 Lincoln MKS with the EcoBoost engine option is the big brother to the SHO, sharing engine (without the extra 10 HP), chassis, strengthened transmission, and other components. And if you think the Taurus SHO is too heavy at >4360 pounds, the Lincoln - with even more options - will be even worse. With an engine that, according to Lincoln, makes as much HP as a 4.6 liter V-8 (it actually makes a LOT more), and an unexceptional EPA rating of 17/24, the net mileage won't be any better than a V-8 powered car. Given the weight of this porker, this engine won't be able to do much to improve the "fuel economy leadership" that Ford wants to promote. What's needed is a much lighter and smaller Lincoln. Then the EcoBoost V-6 would show it's potential. So, unfortunately, the Lincoln MKS and SHO both suffer from the same problem: weight and plenty of it. And while we've harped on this topic many times over all these past years, we'll say it again: Linco...
Ford Compares EcoBoost Engine to Competition?s V8s
2009-04-19 19:35:00 Since the EcoBoost engine was first introduced, Ford has been working tirelessly to make it as powerful and fuel efficient as possible. This is, of course, due mainly to the EcoBoost drivetrain being the staple of Ford's long term plan to increase sales. The real question is, how well will the new engine do when compared to the competition? Ford recently released a side-by-side comparison that should help answer that question.
New high-res Ford SHO Taurus and EcoBoost images on DrivingEnthusiast.net
2009-03-01 23:28:00 Interested in the new 2010 Taurus SHO? We've explained our feelings in the past few weeks that the Taurus is in our humble opinion (and as owners of both Gen 1 and Gen 3 SHOs) just too big a platform to build a proper SHO on... but that's what we have been handed so we'll go with it. Today we've expanded our website significantly, adding 292 MB and 27 MB of images respectively to the sections on the site covering the 2010 SHO and the EcoBoost engine. Dozens of super high resolution (SHR?) images cover all available angles of the car and it's engine. Our purpose? To preserve these images for posterity. We've done the same with images of all the major Ford products over the past ten years, such as the 2000 Cobra R. Enthusiasts can save them, make them into wallpapers, plan a purchase of a SHO, and - if you are engine nuts like us - examine the engines in fine detail. Ford EcoBoost Lineup Gets a Twin Turbo V6
2009-02-21 01:57:00 Considering how much positive feedback Ford's 4-cylinder EcoBoost engine received, the next logical step would be a V6. Ford decided to take it one step further by designing a high output EcoBoost engine that should catch the interest of performance junkies and eco-savvy people alike.
Ford Ecoboost V-6 in testing phase
2008-09-04 12:54:00 It looks like Ford might have a home run with the EcoBoost V-6 engine... but we'll withhold judgment until we see how the engine actually fares under the hands of real-world customers. We've personally been burned too many times by Ford with SVT Cobras that were unusable in the Texas heat... despite extensive high-speed testing at the Arizona Proving Grounds. And- while it might be argued that while that was indeed the "old Ford", that was also the Ford was wasn't facing bankruptcy, hadn't mortgaged the factories and Headquarters, and had as much development and testing budget as needed. And SVT was allegedly run by enthusiasts and the cream of the crop of top-notch engineers, who should have known better and who covered up their amateurish mistakes until recalls were forced on them. Fortunately, that particular bunch doesn't exist any longer in the "new" Ford. And good riddance. This is an interesting engine... out DrivingEnthusiast network has all...
The other Ford EcoBoost: 1.6 liter 4 cylinder
2008-04-30 16:52:00 Automotive News (April 28, 2008) reports that Ford has developed a new 1.6 liter DOHC 4-cylinder direct-injected and turbocharged engine branded as EcoBoost in Europe. This is the third use of the EcoBoost brand so far, after the 2 liter and 3.5 liter EcoBoost engines in North America. Ford's Bridgend plant in Southern Wales will build the engine and it will be used in the Focus, Mondeo, S-Max, and Fiesta models in Europe. The new engine is aimed at offering a more economical and cleaner (particularly CO2) alternative to the larger 2 and 2.3 liter engines currently offered. Ford of Europe will also export up to 300,000 of these engines to the United States by the end of 2009 for an unspecified model. We know that the Fiesta and Focus European models are coming to North America after that timeframe so this is likely, along with the eventual Fusion or Fusion replacement. No photos or technical information is available yet.
Meet the new Ford Ecoboost twin-turbo V-6
2008-04-11 18:35:00 Meet the new Ford EcoBoost twin-turbo DOHC V-6 engine. Follow the link in the title of this post above and select the "EcoBoost" section. Press releases, and several technical high-res images are available. Note the EcoBoost blog category I've set up to highlight EcoBoost topics. Click on the image to the right for just one of several high-res images showing parts of the engine in great detail. This interesting new engine will be available in 2009 in the Lincoln MKS and MKT, the Ford Flex, the new F-150, and the 2010 Taurus (SHO?). It only makes 340-350 HP, and it's not intercooled. But it does make ~340 torque and the torque curve is very flat. It's been shown and discussed only with a 6-speed automatic at this point, although further transmissions are a possibility. Although Ford is not talking any further details, it's interesting to note that Ford has started to use a new automated manual dual-clutch 6-speed transmission in Europe behind a mea...
Ford EcoBoost Technology video
2008-03-03 15:34:00 Speaking of the Ford EcoBoost technology, Ford has thoughtfully provided this YouTube video covering the upcoming single-turbo V-6 Duratec. It's targeted to produce 340 HP and 340 lb-ft of torque. It will be found first in the Lincoln MKS, and later in a wider range of vehicles including the Taurus. There is also a twin-turbo V-6, although it's further out. And a single-turbo 4 cylinder. Note the timeline that is shown... several other interesting facts there including an upcoming dual-clutch transmission. It's unclear which market he is talkingf about for the transmission, it's already known that it will be offered in Europe. Perhaps it will start here as an option in the upcoming Verve, followed by the (finally!) European Focus?
Ford spreading the EcoBoost love to the Mustang
2008-01-27 01:24:00 Once upon a time the old 302cu.in. V-8 was almost ubiquitous within Ford being available in some form in just about every vehicle that Dearborn built except the lowly Pinto. It looks like the next engine to achieve that status will be the new 3.5L EcoBoost V-6. The turbocharged direct injected V-6 has already been announced for the Flex, Explorer, F-150, MKS, MKT and will likely appear elsewhere including the 2010 Mustang. Turbocharged engines have not appeared in the Mustangs since the SVO model of the mid-eighties. When the old Fox-bodied Mustangs debuted in 1979 just in time for the second oil embargo they featured a 2.3L turbo four-cylinder with 132hp as the most powerful engine. Thanks to modern engine electronics and direct fuel injection, modern turbo engines are far more robust than those earlier units that had a nasty tendency toward premature death by cooked bearings. The V-6 will likely be rated at a minimum of 340hp to start and be lighter in weight than the current 4.6L...
Next-generation Ford Mustang to use EcoBoost engines?
2008-01-26 00:46:00 Next-generation Ford Mustang to use EcoBoost engines? Ford is considering offering its next-generation Mustang with a twin-turbo EcoBoost V6, a new report finds. While no decision is said to have been made yet, several Ford executives are supporting an EcoBoost-powered Mustang in the face of newly passed CAFE regulation. EcoBoost Ford's EcoBoost family of engines will first bow in the Lincoln MKS sedan, but the turbocharged range of engines could ultimately replace the Mustang's traditional range-topping V8. The advantage of the EcoBoost line is that it offers greater performance with less fuel consumption. But muscle car enthusiasts don't need to worry quite yet as Ford has no plans to kill the V8 in the immediate future. In fact, when the 2010 Mustang makes its debut, it will be available with a new 5.0L V8. Although the new engine is essentially an evolution of the current Mustang GT's 4.6L V8, the added displacement, along with some mechanical upgrades, ...
Ford Explorer America Concept: EcoBoost technology improves fuel economy
2008-01-21 14:44:00 The new Ford Explorer America Concept will be using the EcoBoost technology, and what this will do is help to achieve at least 20-30 percent better fuel economy. However do not think for one moment that performance is compromised, as you will be mistaken. The Ford Explorer America Concept SUV uses a number of features to ...

Detroit 2008: Bill Ford talks about hybrids, EcoBoost and sustainability
2008-01-18 05:55:00 During the Detroit Auto Show, a Ford press liaison invited AutoblogGreen and around a dozen other journalists to an on-the-record dinner to talk about sustainability and related topics. As a guy who writes for AutoblogGreen, I couldn't help but notice that every single person around the dinner table had been at Cobo Hall during the day. The first day's schedule of jam-packed press events ended at around 6:30 at the show in downtown, and the dinner started at 7:30 on Southfield, which is 20+ miles away. So, for a relaxed discussion on Ford's commitment to sustainability, Ford made sure that we all needed to drive for half an hour. Nice. To be fair, it's not like Ford at home in Detroit, so maybe they didn't know that there are plenty of good restaurants downtown. Oh, wait. Anyway, the chance to sit with Sue Cischke, Ford's Senior Vice President, Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering and Bill Ford, Jr. himself made the dinner too tempting and so I headed out to the ...

EcoBoost: The Power That?s Ford
2008-01-08 02:45:00 How much power is Ford capable of giving? ? Connect it with EcoBoost. In an interview with MSNBC, Jim Farley, Ford?s new marketing chief, has this to say: "I couldn't wipe the smile off my face. I've never driven a Toyota like that, ever. The torque, out of that kind of displacement ? in this case a 4-cylinder ? was shocking.""I think this is really going to be a brave one. We're going to have to invest. We're going to have to tell customers how we're different," he added. "Direct-injection gas is really a technology that could be implemented in the millions. It's significant. It's broader."Farley, who left Toyota to join Ford, will have a challenging task selling EcoBoost, the automaker?s new direct-injection, turbocharged engine."We need to simplify things for customers. As marketers, it's unrealistic to expect customers to understand high-pressure direct injection or forced induction in turbocharging," he told The Associated Press in a recent interview. "Let's face it. Fo...
