In a single year, home prices were increasing by 30 percent or more. Today the picture is quite different. Now the main clients ...

Indonesian central bank may suffer 8.02 trillion rupiah deficit
2008-06-10 09:35:00
The Indonesian central bank may suffer this year a much bigger deficit than last year due to a costly interest payout to holders of its key certificates, local press said Tuesday. Bank Indonesia, the central bank, is expected to suffer a total deficit of 8.02 trillion rupiah (about 861 million U.S. dollars) by the end of 2008, as it has to pay the interest of its certificates. Last year, the bank suffered a deficit of 1.4 trillion rupiah (150 million dollars), reported major newspaper The Jakarta Post, citing central bank chief Boediono. The bank announced that foreign exchange reserves in the first quarter of this year stood at 59 billion dollars due to a rise in exports, but the figure fell to 57.46 billion in May.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com-
Obama Leads McCain After Clinton Endorsement
2008-06-10 08:51:00
Barack Obama made gains over John McCain according to the latest presidential polling. Rasmussen and Gallup polling data from June 6 through June 8 showed a sizable bump for Obama after officially clinching the Democratic nomination. Barack Obama became the presumptive Democratic nominee last Tuesday after picking up superdelegates endorsements and pledged delegates from South Dakota and Montana. Senator Clinton met with Democratic leaders on Wednesday and later announced her intentions to withdrawal from the race and endorse Obama. With the Democratic nomination locked up and Senator Clinton endorsing Obama, Obama had a week of publicity following this major victory. According a Rasmussen poll, Obama picked up 4 points and McCain lost 2 points from the previous week. The six point swing gives Obama a 50 percent to 44 percent lead. The previous Rasmussen poll showed a dead tie between Obama and McCain. Gallup polling data showed a slightly larger swing fo...
Obama: Give economy $50 billion boost
2008-06-10 06:54:00
On the first day of what is to be a two-week economic tour around the country, Barack Obama said Monday that lawmakers should inject another $50 billion immediately into the sluggish U.S. economy. The presumptive Democratic presidential nominee cited the largest monthly increase in the unemployment rate in over 20 years, and record highs in oil prices, food prices and foreclosures. "Such relief can't wait until the next president takes office. ... That's why I've called for another round of fiscal stimulus, an immediate $50 billion to help those who've been hit hardest by this economic downturn," Obama told a crowd in Raleigh, N.C. Yeah, because the current one has been such a smashing success. Didn't Obama bad mouth the previous stimulus package? Oh yeah, he did. It's not that the economy has taken a downturn, it's the high cost of oil as well as bad mortgage decisions by all involved.  This is simply the market place adjusting itself.  Nothing more.   Travis...

ST Telemedia`s sale of Indosat shares to Qtel "unethical", KPPU
2008-06-10 01:37:00
The Commission for Supervision of Business Competition (KPPU) said the sale of Singapore Technologies Telemedia (STT)`s 40.8 percent stake in PT Indosat to Qatar Telecom (Qtel) is an "unethical act and a show of disrespect for an ongoing legal process.""While still involved in the legal case being handled by the Supreme Court, STT has sold its shares. This is tantamount to trampling not only on the KPPU`s but also on the nation`s self-respect," KPPU chief Syamsul Maarif said here Monday.Qtel on Friday (June 6) announced it had bought 40.8 percent of Indosat shares through Asian Mobile Holding which in STT`s structure is the owner of Indonesia Communication Limited (ICL) in whose name the Indosat shares were registered. The Qatari company paid 2.4 billion Singapore dollars or 1.8 billion US dollars for the shares. Not long ago, the KPPU ruled Temasek Holding, STT`s parent company, had violated Indonesia`s anti-monopoly law and ordered the Singaporean group to divest its stakes...
Follow Up : Al Burullus revolution.
2008-06-09 22:04:00
First of all I want to clarify something , yes Kafr El-Sheikh has a great MB presence but they do not have any relation from near or far with the uprising , with the mini revolution of the Al Burullus people. Already Al Burullus people acted alone with no pre-organizing movement and this is why it is dangerous from the security of point of view . If it were the MB or the leftists then it would be easily to control but this sudden emotional rebel moves make the regime scared to death. This is stupid regime which does not learn from its mistakes , it forgot that simple fishermen can be very angry and their anger of those outcasted forgotten people can harm all Egypt ,especially rich Egypt that goes to the north Coast and already they saw it last July in the Water protests. Now here is a theory the regime acted so ugly and violently with the people of Al Burullus ?they did not arrest them last year? because they wanted to teach them a lesson , it is not a game to cut or block the ...
Apartment Buildings Beat Inflation With Rising Rents
2008-06-09 20:57:00
It is no secret that inflation has reared its ugly head in the US and around the world. And it is easy to see its effects whenever you go to the gas station to fill up your car or to the grocery store to buy a loaf of bread. You can read the statistics: gas prices are above $4.00 while corn and wheat prices are touching record high in the futures markets. However, for the individual investor it can be difficult to gauge the devastating impact of inflation on his or her investment portfolio. Most investors have the bulk of their money invested in paper assets such as stocks, bonds and mutual funds. Paper assets as opposed to hard assets like gold or real estate usually fair the worst during inflationary periods. The reason for this is because while goods and services are rising in price there is a simultaneous drop in the value of the US Dollar and the price of securities or common stocks. Public companies tend to trim operations during inflationary and recessionary economies b...

Al-Burullus made the headlines around the globe in the last 48 hours as the city which saw the hunger revolution , real hunger revolution. All Egyptian commenters and activists consider Al-Burullus to be the second Mahalla whether from the public anger or how the security dealt with it. Nevertheless Al-Burullus people proved to be real respectable people with hot temper , if we were all with hot temper like them our rights would not have been taken one by one like this. If you remember last summer we were shocked to know that in the land of the Nile there were Egyptians who could not find not clean water for months , the Nile Delta saw huge protests starting from Al-Burullus , when the people from that city brought their cause to the attention of the world when they cut and blocked the international highway for 6 or 7 hours after 11 days without water. Ironically its anniversary is next month The people of Burullus knew the trick ,the government won?t listen or look down humb...

Standard Chartered considers Indonesia a benchmark for success

The Jakarta Post talked to Standard Chartered group chief executive Peter Sands on the bank's plan to expand business here, and concerns for the community. The following are excerpts from the interview:Generally, by the benchmark of Standard Chartered banking in Indonesia, it's been a success story. We acquired the American Express Bank business here in Indonesia as well, so as to increase capabilities of both the corporate side of the financial institution, and the retail side as well.Do you think Indonesia has the potential to be like Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC)?I definitely feel there's potential for Indonesia. It has the GDP growth potential, and has the scale, population and natural resources to become another BRIC, which I think is a very exciting prospect for the country. There are quite a number of studies on how economies will grow to 2025 and 2050. I think Indonesia figures very strongly in the top 10, just outside the top five. There's a lot of opportunities ...

Last night the city of Al-Burullus witnessed huge clashes between the citizens and police forces. About 8000 citizen gathered and protested against the governer's decision to distribute Wheat on bakeries instead of the people. The clashes and its size and severity reminded the people with the clashes of the Mahalla on last 6th of April 2008 .I think that this is the first big sized protests to be for wheat and bread , Mahalla was originally for workers' right and rise in prices , but this is for Wheat and bread.People are getting more and more angry for wheat , this reminds me with the French Revolution , strangely no one reads history or learns anything from it , Moshe Dyan was right !!The Governer of the Kafr El-Sheikh , which Al-Burullus city follows of course denied that there were clashes and said that the protestors were few on TV last night !!??I do not think that 8000 citizens can be described as few protesters ,even if they protested in Cairo !!??I am trying to put my hand...

Oil ?Bulls? its Way Above $139 on its Way to a New Record as the U.S. Dolla

Crude oil for July delivery traded at an all-time high of $139.12 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange today (Friday), after the U.S. dollar nosedived on speculation that the European Central Bank would raise its key lending rate and on worries that a bigger-than-expected spike in unemployment meant the U.S. economy was far weaker than feared. For the day, July crude oil soared $10.75, or 8.4%, to close at an all-time high of $138.54. For the week, the contract climbed 8.8% on the NYMEX. That means profit opportunities abound for U.S. investors, despite myriad messes on the home front that include a collapsed housing market,…
E-Book on the Economy and Mortgage Rates Coming

I don't normally throw out advertising in this blog, but I wanted to get this news out... In the next month or so, I am going to finish a book on how the economy affects mortgages rates.  I believe every mortgage professional, and any other professional in the industry who wants to show added value, needs to know how economic data, events, etc. impact mortgage rates and why it is so important to have a constant watch on them, or at least work with a mortgage professional who accesses real-time mortgage bond quotes. The book will be highlighting how various economic data plays a role in the overall picture, especially those that highlight inflation.  It will also delve into how to read charts, chart patterns, stochastics, and how these technical indicators can "predict" where interest rates are headed with some certainty. The book is mostly written at this point, but I do need to put final touches on it, review it for accuracy, etc., so it may be a little while before it i...

Tough phase for the Indian Economy
2008-06-07 00:00:00
Market melts down totally on the back of rising inflation, global food crisis and boiling crude oil prices. India is suffering from a lot of factors such as increasing fiscal deficit due to tons of subsidies, political pressure on the home ground, inflationary pressure to name a few. Selling on part of the FIIs and bearish sentiment of the investors have kept the market in pressure as selling has been witnessed from the last couple of weeks. Nifty 50 had broken the psychology level of 4800 and even 4600 and it is likely to break even 4200 mark. Now the question is where will we stop? Lots of analysts are advising in the front of value buying or bottom fishing. Blue chip shares are available at a price of nothing. It is the high time to invest for the long term view. Still we can see the shortage of investors on the bourses. The sentiment is so bearish that everyone might be thinking that market will move more in the southward direction. Oil marketing companies are losing Rs. 620 cro...

Decided to check Bay St. again this morning as it was kinda cool when I saw it yesterday and it brought back a little nostalgia from when I started at Swellmagnet all those years ago.Plus, the tide is a -1.5 ft at 6:30 am, so I knew that Venice would be pretty much worthless. And guess what? So was Bay St. There is some pretty decent windswell in the chest / head high range, but there just isn't enough water to get anything going other than 3 block long, super dumpy closeouts, with nary a snaggable corner to be had. I say give it a chance to fill in, say around 10:30 or so. The winds should still be manageable, you'll be getting a decent push up from the tides and the dawn patrol should be long gone. Of course, this is assuming you don't have a job and can make your own schedule. Either way, I'm stuck here at my desk hoping my ankle feels better by tomorrow so I can get out there.About 5-6 dudes out scattered around Towers 18-20, calm/variable winds, beautiful day shaping up, bri...
