Developing a True BPM Ecosystem
2008-11-07 20:58:00 In a recent article, Rashid N. Khan, former founder and CEO of Ultimus, makes a case for diversity in the BPM ecosystem, comparing it to the transportation ecosystem. He then goes on concluding that ?one BPMS will not satisfy all the process needs of an organization, one BPMS vendor is unlikely to meet all the process needs of an organization, [and] one standard will not be suitable for all types of BPMS.? While I have a great deal of respect for what Mr. Khan did at Ultimus, I must disagree with both his analogy and his conclusions. The rest of the article is available at BPMLab.org.

Ecosystem Collapse From The CO2 Already In The Air
2008-05-12 23:42:00 The temperature has recently dropped more than half a degree C due mostly to cooler surface sea temperatures. It is estimated that the next couple of years will be cooler until the hotter side of the cycle combines with elevated atmospheric greenhouse gas to cause record high surface air temperatures. Ecosystems are sensitive to such temperature increase.

The Linux Ecosystem to More than Double to $49 Billion
2008-05-07 21:55:00 Linux may be a free platform for many and a reasonably inexpensive alternative to Unix and proprietary platforms for others, but make no mistake. For years, Linux has been big business, and if projections made by the market researchers at IDC turn out to be correct, in a few short years the Linux server ecosystem spending on hardware, software, and services directly relating to the platform will hit $49 billion by 2011. That's more than twice the $21 billion in Linux-related server spending that IDC reckons the companies of the world accounted for in 2007.[Here are some more 'statistics' for you - Scott]

Phishing Ecosystem
2008-02-18 11:11:00 Taking a look at one of the thousands of malware samples we are processing everyday, we have found a Trojan that was looking for e-mail addresses, apparently nothing special. Unlike other Trojans, it was not looking for e-mail addresses in every location, but only in the valid contact list. All of them were saved in a text file and uploaded via FTP to the hacker’s server. The guy was fool enough to leave the ftp credentials in plain text, so we could access effortlessly. We accessed the server, which was running a RedHat Linux distribution. Once there, we could see a few thousands of stolen e-mail addresses, plus some phishing pages belonging to different banks from Italy, Brazil, and some other countries:The server contained some scripts to send out phishing e-mails to the stolen addresses, as well as to send the Trojan. So it was an easy task: send out the Trojan, wait for stolen e-mail data to come, send out phishing attacks and wait for the stolen credentials. And as I hav...

New Study Finds Biodiversity Conservation Secures Ecosystem Services For Pe
2008-01-23 05:06:00 Healthy ecosystems that provide people with essential natural goods and services often overlap with regions rich in biological diversity, underscoring that conserving one also protects the other, according to a new studyą„¤ Titled Global Conservation of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, the report confirms the value of making biological diversity a priority for conservation efforts. It shows that more than 70 percent of the world's highest priority areas for biodiversity conservation also contain significant value in ecosystem services such as fresh water, food, carbon storage, storm buffers and other natural resources that sustain human life and support social and economic development.Scientists from Conservation International (CI), the Gund Institute for Ecological Economics at the University of Vermont, and the Global Environment Facility found that the value of ecosystem services in the 7 percent of the planet of greatest biodiversity conservation priority was more than dou...
Nonlinear Ecosystem Response Points To Environmental Solutions
2008-01-23 05:02:00 The preservation of coastal ecosystem services such as clean water, storm buffers or fisheries protection does not have to be an all-or-nothing approach, a new study indicates, and a better understanding of how ecosystems actually respond to protection efforts in a "nonlinear" fashion could help lead the way out of environmental-versus-economic gridlocką„¤ There may be much better ways to provide the majority of environmental protection needed while still maintaining natural resource-based jobs and sustainable communities, scientists from 13 universities and research institutes will suggest January 18 in a new article in the journal Science."The very concept of ecosystem-based management implies that humans are part of the equation, and their needs also have to be considered," said Lori Cramer, an associate professor of sociology at Oregon State University."But ecosystem concerns have too often been viewed as an all-or-none choice, and it doesn't have to be that way," Cramer said. ...

Building a widget / ecosystem of programmers
2008-01-08 00:56:00 QuarkRuby, one of the hottest shopping startups in India has a new post about building widgets. It is a great post and they talk about all sorts of widgets one can possibly make.On seeing a post on programming, it is surprising that most developers at Indian Startups hardly ever talk much about the technology they are using. Maybe it's because none of us here are really innovating all that much, and most of it is not already available on the internet. But I am sure there are a lot of really good programmers out there with loads and loads of tricks up their sleeves. Somehow none of it ever comes out in the open. There are some like Vikas Patial of NGCoders, who is literally a God. Everybody always wanted RSS on Orkut, but he was the guy who actually brought it out. I know what everybody is thinking now, but no, that's not important. I don't care how much money he made off the script. What's important is that he made a script which worked like a charm, and he just put it out there ...
