Destroying native ecosystems for biofuel crops will worsen global warming
2008-02-11 19:08:00 Turning native ecosystems into "farms" for biofuel crops causes major carbon emissions that worsen the global warming that biofuels are meant to mitigate, according to a new study by the University of Minnesota and the Nature Conservancy. The work will be published in Science later this month and will be posted online Thursday, Feb. 7. The carbon lost by converting rainforests, peatlands, savannas, or grasslands outweighs the carbon savings from biofuels. Such conversions for corn or sugarcane (ethanol), or palms or soybeans (biodiesel) release 17 to 420 times more carbon than the annual savings from replacing fossil fuels, the researchers said. The carbon, which is stored in the original plants and soil, is released as carbon dioxide, a process that may take decades. This "carbon debt" must be paid before the biofuels produced on the land can begin to lower greenhouse gas levels and ameliorate global warming. The conversion of peatlands for palm oil plantations in Indonesia ran up...

Healthy ecosystems provide everything -Part II
2007-12-05 15:32:00 Channdigarh : Magazines and newspapers are daily projecting the ever increasing environmental disasters and their multiplication despite effective control measures taken. Droughts, floods, less rainfall, decline in the availability of natural resources etc. Are daily projected in the headlines of various magazines and newspapers throughout the world. Major techniques and advancement in technology to control the environment on account of global warming are being made in the United States and throughout the world .The number of green houses is rapidly increasing. But still, the problem has not been solved and it is expected that till 2050, it will future cause extinction of life on the earth.Global warming is projected as one of the most serious problems to the global environment ever faced in developing world. Yet, focusing entirely on carbon dioxide emissions, major environmental associations throughout the world have failed to account for published data showing that other gases too...

Healthy ecosystems provide everything - part, I
2007-12-03 15:37:00 Chandigarh : Worldwide discussions are being made on the status of earth in 2050 due to environmental changes. The United Nations made assessment on the basis of survey and global ecosystem was well linked with human well being. Healthy ecosystems provide everything needed by the human being like food, water, and clean air to breathe and if the ecosystem services are degraded, so is the effect on human life. The worst sufferers are the poor people because due to environmental degradation, as their reliance on natural ecosystems is immediate. Consider a natural ecosystem, in which if forests are wiped the people who depend upon plants and animals will die. It is predicted that population of earth will suffer a lot till 2050 because due to environmental changes, the ecosystems are going to extinct. (more…)

Coastal Habitats Are The Biosphere's Most Imperiled Ecosystems
2007-10-22 12:54:00 The BBVA Foundation’s Third Debate on Conservation Biology allowed leading international experts to present findings of their latest research into the scale, causes and consequences of global loss of coastal habitats। The disappearance of these ecosystems, which include coral reefs, mangrove forests, wetlands and seagrass meadows, has serious consequences like loss of biodiversity, depletion of exploitable living resources, impaired capacity of the oceans to sequester CO2 and loss of the leisure value of the coastal zone. Not only that, the coastline becomes more vulnerable to the increased erosion associated with rising sea levels.Carlos Duarte, researcher at the Spanish Council for Scientific Research and coordinator of the debate, informed the public that “coastal habitats are disappearing at a rate of between 1.2% and 9% a year and are now the biosphere’s most imperiled systems, with rates of loss 4 to 10 ten times faster than those of the tropical rainforest.”The caus...

Marine Ecosystems In Collapse
2007-02-20 22:51:01 Entire marine ecosystems have been wiped out, devastating populations of sea birds and larger marine mammals. These “dead zones” occur where there are disturbances to the nutrient-rich ocean currents, which are driven by coastal winds. Extreme marine suffocations have occurred off the west coast of the US every year for the last five years. The most intense event, ...

New research shows that this mass extinction did more than eliminate species: ecologically simple marine communities were largely displaced by complex communitiesField Museum, James Cook University scholars uncover a profound, yet overlooked ecological change in the history of lifeEurekAlert -CHICAGO: The earth experienced its biggest mass extinction about 250 million years ago, an event that wiped out an estimated 95% of marine species and 70% of land species. New research shows that this mass extinction did more than eliminate species: it fundamentally changed the basic ecology of the world's oceans.Read the rest of this article...
