However it wasn’t dark enough and I wasn’t close enough to get any decent shots of the illuminations. However ...

A Sunny Day in Edinburgh
2008-06-01 10:46:00 The Sun came out properly for the first time in two years! Thankfully it was on a Saturday so for the most part offices were closed and most people did not have to look at the weather from behind a desk! The sun came out, people came out and the smiles came out (some seemed to be grimacing but that might have just been a lack of practice)! Lots of wobbly people around; white pasty shaped lumps of dough who looked as if they had spent two years indoors and on the couch, perhaps the occasional trip to MacDonald?s or simply a choice between the take-away menus that conveniently flopped through the letterbox - and hey, bingo next the door bell rings and a pizza or a Chinese is there! The sun brought people out of the dark on Saturday, like bears after hibernation it took them the whole day to see that it was for real, that the skies were not going to darken, that the heavens were not going to open and let what might be the whole Amazon river down onto the city of Edinburgh! It was difficu...
Edinburgh Culinary Recap
2008-05-25 07:02:00 I can't believe that it's been two weeks since we were off to Edinburgh! Time just flies, especially at this time of year. May and June are monster months for me, for the simple fact that I have so many friends who celebrate their birthdays from the end of May through the middle of June. E kicks off the festivities on the 18th, mine is nine days later (next Tuesday), one of my three baby brothers celebrates his birthday the day after E, then there are my ten Gemini girlfriends sprinkled here and there for good measure, plus my twin nieces and the daughter of one friend and son of another. Birthday madness!!! If I only manage to get my TWD posts up over next several weeks, please understand that it's not because I've lost interest, it's simply because my social calendar is too full! For that very reason I wanted to be sure that I shared the little gold nuggets of culinary goodness that I came across in Edinburgh with you, before it becomes mosterd na de maaltijd (mustard after t...

Jazz and pizzazz in Edinburgh
2008-05-23 00:00:00 Despite the giveaway name, Edinburgh's Jazz Bar offers much more than a single musical genre. That said, for great jazz, drinks and an unpretentious, laid-back atmosphere this basement bar on Chambers Street can't be beaten.Staging two gigs a night, seven nights a week, as well as Saturday afternoon performances, you'd be hard-pressed not to find something favourable to sit back and chill out to.Whether it be jazz, funk, soul, hip-hop or big band arrangements, most musical tastes are covered, while the recent introduction of poetry evenings and singer-songwriter nights have swelled visitor numbers further. Those seeking a quieter experience may enjoy the after-work ambience in the early evenings, with good drinks offers and free WiFi.Brass Monkey is another great chill-out option in Edinburgh, offering reasonably priced drinks and regular film screenings in a cosy environment.

Scott Monument, Edinburgh
2008-05-17 22:23:00 The Scott Monument is a victorian gothic monument to Scottish author Sir Walter Scott (not to be confused with the National Monument). It stands in Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh, opposite the Jenners department store on Princes Street and near to Waverley Station. The tower is 200.5 feet or 61.1 metres tall, and has a series of viewing decks reached by a series of narrow spiral staircases giving panoramic views of central Edinburgh and its surroundings. The highest viewing deck is reached by a total of 287 steps. It is built from Binnie shale quarried in nearby Livingston; the oil which continues to leech from its matrix has helped to glue the notoriously filthy atmosphere of Victorian Edinburgh (then nicknamed “Auld Reekie” — old smokey) to the tower, leaving it an unintended sooty-black colour. It is often noted for looking like a “gothic rocket ship”. Edinburgh is one of top travel destinations. GPS vacation destination: 55° 57′ 8.7″ N, 3° 11...

Sumptuous stay and fine dining in Edinburgh
2008-05-01 20:30:00 One of the coolest hotels in the Scottish capital, the Bonham hotel has interesting roots as a maternity hospital. However, now minus the screaming babies, it was reincarnated into a relaxing retreat in 1998.Situated in an excellent location just moments from a huge range of shops and boutiques as well as all the glorious sites the fashionable city of Edinburgh has to offer, this is a great place to stay during a visit.Home to 48 spacious rooms and a lavish restaurant complete with a French chef, this is one of the city's fines hotels, having recently been named the Scottish Boutique Hotel of the Year. The chef of Restaurant at the Bonham, Michel Bouyer, creates delightful European-inspired dishes, including Aberdeen Angus beef with porcini sauce - successfully combining traditional Scottish fare with a modern European twist. This eatery won a commendation by the Scottish Hotels of the Year Awards 2007.Other top hotels in the Scottish capital include Glasshouse, Le Monde and the Scots...
The Royal Mile, Edinburgh
2008-04-27 23:48:00 The Royal Mile is the popular name for the succession of streets which form the main thoroughfare of ’s Old Town. As the name suggests, the Royal Mile is approximately one Scottish mile long, and runs between two foci of history in Scotland, from Edinburgh Castle at the top of the Castle Rock down to Holyrood Abbey. It is said to be referred to by locals as “High Street”, but properly, this is the name of only one stretch. The streets which make up the Royal Mile are (west to east) Castle Esplanade, Castlehill, Lawnmarket, High Street, Canongate and Abbey Strand. The Royal Mile is Edinburgh Old Town’s busiest tourist street, rivalled only by Princes Street in the New Town. GPS travel coordinates: 55° 56′ 59″ N, 3° 11′ 17″ W

Kebab Mahal (Edinburgh)
2008-04-06 00:19:00 My favourite place to eat in Edinburgh! The reason for this is disarmingly simple: the dishes on the menu are of a quality that could easily hold their own alongside many posh venues and restaurants, yet at an affordable price that is in keeping with the modesty of the surroundings. No one will ever claim this ...

Back Home; from Venezuala to Edinburgh
2008-03-08 09:58:00 I am back home now! I understand that I have left Venezuela in Turmoil - I read somewhere in some newspaper that troops were being mobilized on the Cambodian border or something! Sorry Hugo! The return flight was semi-uneventful! Certainly the queues at the Lufthansa Check-in in La Guiara (Caracas) International Airport left something to be desired, not that they were long simply snail like as the "check-in-ers" felt that ten minutes per passenger was normal - and then ask them to pay an airport tax in Bolivares which nobody of course had! Oh, and I must mention the long-haired, extremely-skinny, dark-sunglass-posing, smelly, army-jacket-wearing Columbian who was either in the process of shipping drugs, was taking drugs or was at the very least thinking about one or both, did you have to put him next to me in the plane? And also that lady across the aisle? She ensured that my journey was sleep free as she talked (shouted) to her friends behind, in front and I think those thirty rows...
