Of course then, I was enrolled in a high school French course, and Piaf’s tales of abusive lovers and heroin addiction were heady stuff for a kid coming of age in the 60s. Not long ago, I rolled into the bookstore and picked up a CD of Piaf’s best - -The Voice of the Sparrow: The Very Best of Edith Piaf - - as my vinyls were long-gone. Listening to her tunes was magic - not only did it take me back to my own coming of age days, it reminded me of how much I loved her gritty, no-holds barred music. If you haven’t listened to Piaf, get yourself over to Amazon or your local bookseller and pick up this CD. You don’t even need to know any French to recognize the pain and suffering of France’s legendary Little Sparrow. Inociou a sua carreira com 15 anos de idade, cantando em cafés e cabarés franceses onde acompanhava a mãe, Annetta Giovanna Maillard (artisticamente Line Marsa), que cantava nestes lugares. Iniciou a sua carreira com apenas 15 anos. Em 1935, fez a sua estréia teatral e, em poucos anos, foi convidada para cantar em grandes teatros e casas de espectáculo de Paris. A sua voz potente e seu estilo expressivo ao interpretar canções como Non je ne regrette Rien e La vie en rose garantiram-lhe um grande número de admiradores. Incentivada pelo actor Maurice Chevalier, actuou também em filmes, comédias e operetas. Cantora e compositora imortal, faleceu prematuramente em 10 de outubro de 1963 em resultado de uma combinação de privações na infância, boémia, o vício da morfina e o hábito do álcool.
