EDITORIAL: Being Christian is a death sentence ? Washington Times
2011-12-30 16:08:00
Persecuted Christians are fleeing from the Middle East in increasing numbers. The United States should open its doors to them as a guaranteed safe haven. America has long been a beacon of hope for the world’s refugees, and members of religious minorities in the Middle East are in increasing need of relief. They have never ...
Looking for the Political at Art Basel
2011-12-19 16:11:00
The politics at Art Basel, one of the largest contemporary art exhibitions in the US, may be hard to find, but they’re there for those who know where to look.  On December 4th Karen Rosenberg wrote an article in the New York Times (entitled ?Art Basel: Business Over Activism?) highlighting the lack of political art ...

Happy Birthday Nietzche & Foucault!
2011-10-15 09:02:00
There’s only a little to say about this – Michel Foucault was born October 15, 1926, and by weird coincidence, Friedrich Nietzsche was born on the same day 82 years earlier- October 15, 1844. Big thinkers in the canon of Dead White Men. So what, you might be asking — and what does that have ...

Review "The Front Page": Comics Meet Editorial Tabloid Entertainm
2011-04-19 00:15:00
Gambling, drinking, fondling, lying, killing: it's just another day at the office. Press and politics fraternize in the Windy City. TimeLine Theatre presents the Chicago classic THE FRONT PAGE. It's the1920s. Newspapermen hang out in the press room of the Chicago Criminal Courts Building. Outside, the gallows are being tested for the next morning's hanging. Inside, the reporters wait out THE story. It's a full-on man-cave-frat-house with poker, flasks and dirty boxers. Area happenings are phoned in and deemed newsworthy based on the corpse's attractiveness. The sheriff and mayor trade execution press passes for election favors. One of the fellas, Hildy Johnson is leaving the news racket to get married. As Hildy says his goodbyes, the condemned man escapes. The man hunt sends the reporters on the run. When an exclusive climbs in the window, Hildy has to choose between his girl and his passion. THE FRONT PAGE is a hot off the presses commemorative edition.
Why Baseball Matters (Editorial)
2011-03-29 09:02:00
I used to put my uniform on three hours early. It was a pullover top with the name of some Major League Team stretched across the chest. We had tan elastic pants and makeshift stirrups from some cheap athletic distribution center. I had plastic cleats that had the remnants of dirt pasted on the soles; merged with some leftover sunflower seeds. Sometimes, I would even put my batting gloves on as if Gene Michael, Frank Luchessi, or Don Zimmer could call on me to pinch-hit at any moment.

2010-10-20 22:33:00
What was astonishing about your statement is that the reason workers stayed for longer periods in Germany ? that they were allowed to stay - is because German industries found it too expensive to retrain new workers. It was more efficient to keep them here! But you?re right, there was never an expectation that they would stay forever ? not on the part of government, the public, or the workers themselves. Like you said, everyone hoped they would disappear.
Tribune editorial, teachers unions and Civic Committee head weigh in on...D
2010-08-19 04:08:00
Dennis ByrneYes, I too was surprised. It stems from a Tribune column in which I reported a legal opinion that the Illinois public employee pension benefits might not be as secure as commonly thought. The opinion, written by the Chicago law firm Sidley Austin, argues that the state constitution does not guarantee that the state must pay for all the benefits if the pension funds go bust. That brought an overwrought response from the union, calling me, Eden Martin (president of the Civic Committee of the Commercial Club of Chicago) and the Tribune "tools of terror." Links are provided to the entire discussion below:Here is the Tribune editorial: Tribune, 'Tool of Terror.'Here is the teachers union op-ed column: Teachers: Don't blame...
Women and Children First...And my 1987 Topps Cards (editorial)
2010-07-25 05:26:00
There are many helpless feelings we have in life: the girl gets away, the car breaks down in a busy intersection, HR asks you to come meet them in a windowless office, your team has the lead and Michael Jordan has the ball with three seconds left, John Elway is driving on your defense with under a minute left to go...it's the feeling you get split seconds before your car slides into another.

In order to make a decision like this, there has to be certain mental issues in your life. A loving father who spent countless years driving his son to baseball games, driving to road games, re-setting the ball on the tee, encouraging him to forget about the last bad outing, giving him a pat on the back when things go well...after all this you turn your back on a chance to watch your son play in his home city with all of his friends and family watching?

What do Choppers, Jihadists & Anti-Depressants Have in Common?
2009-10-30 02:09:00
So here I was on a lazy Saturday morning barely awake switching on my brand new Bravia for the latest international news as I was smelling the freshly brewed Colombian coffee.  It seemed very pleasant outside and I was looking forward to the nice warm weather and a walk by the beach. I was thinking about the fun I'd have for the rest of the day far away from my cubicle when all of a sudden my tranquillity was interrupted by something that sounded like a big explosion. For a microsecond I felt like I was in the middle of Kabul. I looked at the TV in case BBC was showing the latest Taliban attack, but to my avail, it was showing the latest results from the Ashes. Then another loud bang almost made me dropped my precious coffee on my Polo robe. ?What The Flying FAK', I thought? I was neither living in Kabul nor in Baghdad and BBC was just showing freaking cricket! read more

Welcome to Monolithic Insanity
2009-07-22 03:38:00
Like many others these days, I had to move because of my job. So I ended up in a cubicle. Naturally, I instantly got interested in who came up with that monstrosity. A few months ago, I happened to read an article in Fortune regarding this issue so after a quick search of my bookmarks, I found the story. Interestingly, the inventor of the cubicle, before his 2000 death denounced his creation by calling it 'monolithic insanity.' read more

Bigotry In The Highest
2009-07-16 22:34:00
One day you wake up a fully-grown adult to find you have no parents.  It isn?t because of a tragic accident or because of fatal illness; it isn?t even because you had a tremendous falling out over them running over your beloved pet ?Cuddles? with the car. It is simply because you exist.  They brought you into this world and now they want you out!  They might even tell you it would have been easier if you had never existed.  So what is their problem?  Well, that is my question, what the fak is their problem?  Maybe they are super religious or bow easily to societal pressures of ?normality? but whatever their excuse, they are homophobic bigots.  They are hateful and intolerant and it has to stop!  read more
Hetero Gender Identities Are Totally Queer
2009-07-16 20:54:00
What is the problem with hetero gender identities?  Why do the majority of people in the world feel threatened by a ?man? in a skirt or a ?woman? in a suit?  If I wear a tie (I would be labeled a ?woman? when defined through the binary) does this somehow offend you?   Ok, maybe if I was wearing an orange tie with a purple shirt, that might be offensive, but who wants to clash anyway?  So what the fak does it matter to you? read more

Garbage Bag Fashions Suited For The High Fashion Runways: Editorial Looks O
2009-04-28 12:00:00
Yesterday I wrote about a costly and luxurious dress made entirely of male peacock feathers and precious gemstones for the bride who really wants to stand out on her wedding day. So today, I thought I'd shift the focus to a series of garments that fall on the other side of the spectrum. Michelle Jank's garbage bag fashions which were designed for an Editorial Series with photographer Paul Scala are an example of a high fashion look for less.
