Do NYT editors understand meaning of liberty?
2012-02-03 21:48:00
Yesterday, James Taranto linked this excerpt from a New York Times editorial: Even in his victory speech Tuesday night, Mr. Romney hinted darkly at the tone of the campaign to come. He accused President Obama of ordering “religious organizations to violate their conscience” and vowed to defend religious liberty. It was a reference to the ...

The Trib Editors Are Uninformed Or Don't Care About Facts
2011-01-04 14:56:00
A friend forwarded me an editorial from last week by the Tribune, calling for Illinois workers' compensation reform.  Now I don't have a great deal of faith in newspapers because it seems any time you personally know the facts of a story, the truth isn't represented in what you read.  This editorial is a perfect example of weak research and investigation.  It reads in part: When Democratic leaders whisper of reform on this, they run smack into two of their most powerful constituencies: organized labor and trial lawyers. So if they get something substantial done, give them points for courage. There is much to do. How can anyone argue that compensation claims should be awarded for workers who get...

Joe the Cop might be another shlub working the beat just to get by, but his opinion is important for all to hear. It's an unmuted view of a policeman's feelings towards the media reaction to crime. His choice of words at time in the article was poor. However, the words successfully communicated the policeman's view towards inner-city shooting coverage. It was, at times, an ignorant rant...A rant typical of Chicago policeman edginess...but that's no reason for a muzzle. If you read under the CN's 'About' page, you'll find this statement:
Indian State High Court Blow For Swami Nityananda In Big Sex Case
2010-06-17 02:35:00
As previously pointed out at 'Call For Media and Government Investigation of Sathya Sai Baba', the Nityananda case has had huge coverage India-wide. The battery of television cameras point and shoot at even the most trivial details, along with excited commentary. Wealthy, influential and international though it is, Nityananda's organization cannot bear comparison with the enormous wealth, political and religious clout of Sathya Sai Baba and his global Sathya Sai Organization.

In playing with my iPad, I determined that editing code in vi via SSH just wasn't going to be possible (the on screen keyboard just doesn't work well for vi keyboard commands). That meant I had to look at AppStore alternatives. I came across two that advertised what I wanted to do; for i ($9.99) ...

This is so, also, of material that he takes off the Internet.

I am the most earth-shatteringly popular cultural force in America, or at least one of the top 10 such cultural forces; I probably have to share the limelight with Stephen Colbert and that one guy who breakdances in that Dirty Vegas Video. No matter who's up there with me, I am still a man to be reckoned with when it comes to pop culture, because 8 days ago, while I was sitting around mooning over my would-be spaghetti sandwich, I posted this video for Why Do You Let Me Stay Here by "She & Him."Then, this past weekend, I was trying to read what was left of my Entertainment Weekly after Mr F and Mr Bunches got hold of it and ripped out most of the pages I was intending to read, and I see that the video for Why Do You Let Me Stay Here has made "The Must List," the list of things you "must" do.It doesn't stop there: Obviously, "She & Him" are also fans of mine, judging by their gratuitous use of the ampersand, which I first popularized on this t-shirt:Ampersand(and which you c...

Free Text Editors That Fit Your Writing Habits

There are a gazillion text editors available, which is amazing when you think about it. How much can you improve on a tool designed to enter text? Well, evidently a lot because I’ve seen one end of the spectrum that has the bare bones essentials and then the other end offering you all sorts of scratch-n-sniff options. I’ve found some nice choices for you to consider that I’d like to share with you, which are all FREE! Writer: A simple name with a simple interface. Pictured above, you can see that it’s distraction-free enabling you to just focus on your words. One of the things I look for in a text editor is word count and this one has it — and I don’t have to select the text first! I also like the choices of colors to make it easy on the eye. The toolbar lights up when you roll over it with your mouse, but then fades after a few seconds. You can also save your files online (create a free account), send the files in a number of ways (even to your W...

Protect Your Software From Memory Editors
2008-04-09 13:21:00
I am a software developer myself and I’m always looking for new ways to develop my software. Nowadays everyone is searching new methods to make their software more secure, but that doesn’t mean 100% secure. But anyways I found a way to protect your software from Memory Editors like TSearch. As most of us know, TSearch searches for variables in the Memory, reads the values, edits them etc… So as TSearch finds the variables I thought, why not storing the data elsewhere? Not in a variable? And I thought, yeah a text box!! So I tried the experiment and it worked! Instead of declaring the variable I stored it into a text box (which I can make hidden, so the user will not be able to see it) and TSearch was not be able to find it! Then I tried declaring the variable and store it as a normal variable, and TSearch found it, and I was able to edit it. Here is a zip file (Security Test -> Click Here To Download), if you want download it and run the two exe files, one is using a variable...

The Culture of Editors - is FCP to blame for medicority?
2008-04-01 16:00:00
Accusations have been leveled at contemporary industry editing culture by Studio Daily writer Scott Simmons. In this detailed micro-essay the charge is leveled that there is a prevailing culture of editing software 'button pushers' rather than informed and knowledgeable post production technical artists. And at heart of this issue, according to the article, is Final Cut Pro and the commoditization that FCP brought to the industry. The article focuses on the culture of editing that goes along with FCP and the authors assertion that FCP editors are all to often severely lacking in real technical post production knowledge. That they know where the buttons are but have little underlying knowledge of workflow.Scott builds much of his argument around the process of online/offline editing and that ‘FCP Editors’ often do not have any understanding or comprehension of this process. Scott finds this problematic, I find it an obvious and necessary evolution in editing; one that is inevitable...

HTML Editors
2008-03-08 06:35:00
In this article we're going to go over some HTML editors, some very popular and some not so popular. There are more editors made to create web pages than Carter has liver pills. If you're the typical non professional user then you are probably familiar with the more popular ones and have absolutely NO clue about some of the obscure ones that are available. We'll cover a few of each.Probably the most popular HTML editor is Microsoft's Front Page. The first version of Front Page came out in the mid 90's. If you're interested you can actually find an article online that talks about the first Front Page beta. You can find the article at http://www.byte.com/art/9607/se-c13/art10.htm. The first Front Page had limited functionality and needed a server extension to work it. Today, Front Page has come a long way. It is one of the most powerful editors you can get and can do just about anything. It is also probably the one used by more people than any other.Of course users of Macromedia'...

New York Times Editors Missed This One
2008-03-03 13:29:00
I’ve long been a fan of Bill Maudlin’s wonderful WWII cartoons depicting life on the front line. Todd DePastino, another admirer, has written a biography, Bill Mauldin: A Life Up Front, that definitely looks worth the read. David Michaelis, writing for the New York Times has a nice review of the book. It’s also an interesting review because of one paragraph, where Michaelis gets the facts wrong about WWII troops and ends up inadvertently writing high praise for Iraq War troops: Real combat soldiers loved Mauldin. His cartoons were well drawn and funny, and, as the famed correspondent Ernie Pyle reported to the civilian press, “They are also terribly grim and real.†Mauldin won admiration because he worked hard to get every detail right; in Willie and Joe he mirrored the American combat soldier’s deep respect for professionalism. Mauldin’s foot-slogging pair did not Sergeant York the enemy’s machine gun nests, nor did they sit on Sad Sack haunches, look...

What do sports editors want? A mix of new and old skill sets, they say
