The Famous ? Loser ? Point!!
2008-03-27 03:03:00 The NHL did something a few years ago, they created a system that makes a team which loses in overtime get a point, I find this to be absurd, but it is making the play-off race exciting.

Brian Burke and the hex of the Edmonton Oilers
2008-02-07 21:42:00 Some might say there's black magic practiced in Anaheim. As the Edmonton Oilers continue to get hit by the injury bug, it almost seems someone is mysteriously putting a hex on the club. With apologies to Billy Bob and Angelina, I'm sure that Brian Burke doesn't exactly wear a vial of Kevin Lowe's blood around his neck. But he could be practicing voodoo.Every time Burke is reminded of Lowe's signing of Dustin Penner last summer, another well-placed jab of a pin plunges into the doll.Hey, it's better than a kick to the groin. And with each hex comes another key injury to the Oilers. The further the Oilers fall, the wider the grin gets on Burke's face. The Oilers now risk a serious plunge in the standings on the heels of the season-ending setback to leading scorer Shawn Horcoff combined with injuries to Sheldon Souray and Raffi Torres. As the injuries mount, the potential of a last-place finish increases. Now this is about the time that Burke gets downright giddy.Considering...

Edmonton Oilers sale to ensure long-term stability
2008-02-01 00:32:00 If the Edmonton Oilers have any long-term plans of thriving in the Alberta capital, now is the time to sell to Daryl Katz. We've seen these two nuzzle up before, with the Edmonton Investors Group playing footsies with Katz under the dinner table before tossing him out the door without even a good-night smooch. The flirting has gone on long enough. In case the EIG hasn't caught on, Daryl Katz wants to own the Oilers. A deal is close - reports indicate it is virtually done - but nothing is over until money changes hands. Ask Jim Balsillie. And as dramatic as my view may seem, the long-term stability of the franchise may depend on it. Unless the sale is approved and handshakes offered, the Oilers, one day, may suffer the same fate as the Winnipeg Jets. There are more than a few people south of the border that have extremely deep pockets and are looking to lure a National Hockey League team to their city. Yes, the new CBA allows even small-market teams to compete. Revenues are up. With th...

Edmonton Oilers
2008-01-16 03:55:00 The Edmonton Oilers: the dynasty that once was.The National Hockey League has seen its share of dynasties over the years, and the Edmonton Oilers were one of the most dominant. The Edmonton Oilers won the Stanley Cup in 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, and 1990. They combined offensive finesse with decent defense and superb goaltending to become a team that few could compete with.In that dynasty period, the Oilers had a plethora of rising stars. Paul Coffey, Grant Fuhr, Jari Kurri, Mark Messier, and, of course, Wayne Gretzky were considered among the league's elite and all eventually ended up in the Hockey Hall of Fame.Gretzky is easily the most famous of the Edmonton Oilers alumni. He broke record after record as a member of the club. His scoring feats while in Edmonton might stand forever.Mark Messier was known as the true captain of the team. His intensity forced those around him to emulate his strong work ethic. He demanded a great deal of his teammates, and as a result is known as one o...

Edmonton Oilers love affair for Smyth one-sided?
2007-10-25 08:51:00 In the wake of that made-for-Hollywood love-in last night in Edmonton, one question kept popping into my somewhat miniscule mind.If Ryan Smyth wanted nothing more than to be an Oiler, as he is having everyone believe, why didn't he just put his name to a contract when he had the chance last summer?Yesterday I wrote how the coverage for Smyth's trip to Alberta seemed a tad exaggerated, but even I'll admit that was a touching little ceremony. Tears everywhere. Emotional Jumbotron tribute. Standing ovation. The only thing missing was a candlelight vigil and some Barry White blaring from the speakers. But as I watched a red-eyed Smyth struggle to keep his composure, a rather large part of me-and no, it wasn't my gut - couldn't help but think this entire homecoming , one that apparently meant so much to both the city and Smyth, could it have been avoided with a pen and sheet of paper. If Ryan Smyth held the city so near and dear to his heart, why didn't he just fly out t...

Props to the Edmonton Oilers
2007-08-04 11:07:00 For having the most globally aware website. In the past few days I signed up to numerous NHL clubs' websites and the newsletters they send out via e-mail. On the online sign-up forms, a handful didn't even have space for any other country except for the U.S.(San Jose's site comes to mind.) Of course, many did have options for other countries. What set the Oilers apart is that when I selected Thailand as country of residence, they actually had a drop-down menu with provinces in Thailand to choose from. Not a big deal, but the kind of small touch that makes a person think the site is designed with users in mind. Most of the sites are designed with what is likely an NHL supplied template design so as to provide a relatively consistent look and feel. All are very slick and content-rich and worth checking out if you are a fan.All NHL teams' websites can be accessed here.
