Difference between a Teacher and an Educator
2008-08-04 12:40:00
(You’ve got to love this Headmistress) According to a news report, a certain private school was recently faced with a unique problem. A number of 12-year-old girls were beginning to use lipstick and would put it on in the bathroom. That was fine, but after they put on their lipstick they would press their lips to the ...

If you have not been to the NAME?s (When are we going to start using the NAME abbreviation, instead of MENC, more?) website for a while you will notice that they received a substantial upgrade to the look of their site.  Although it has taken me awhile to find everything I used before at their site, I think you?ll agree with me that the upgrade is an improvement. Chief among the facelifts is, finally, the addition of two NEEDED and easy to access RSS Feeds embedded within their front page (Now it?s up to us to get everyone to know how to use them!): MENC News: http://menc.org/news.rssMENC Events: http://menc.org/events.rss -; They have also added some relevant adds to the left sidebar and created a Newsblog ?look? to the front page.  It is a little tricky to find the forums and mentor pages, but I?ll tell you how?you have to click on the ?connect? tab and then you?ll find them.   I would like to see a SITEMAP added to the front page to facilitate finding...

Let College Students Pay Says Turkish Educator
2008-01-09 08:06:00
Professor Yusuf Ziya Ozcan, chairperson of the Higher Education Board of Turkey, came out against the concept of free tuition at his nation’s universities. He argued that most nations of the world compel college students to pay for their education and use good jobs obtained as a result of that education to be the source for repayment of costs. “Not everybody needs to be a university graduate…Let’s admit students on a fee-paying basis and provide scholarships for those who need it…Those who receive scholarships can pay it back when they start working just like in the United States.” The example of the United States actually offers the exact opposite picture than the one portrayed by Professor Ozcan. Poor students and many working class students have difficulty going to college due to the need for repaying costs at some future time. Post WWII American offered veterans the G.I. Bill of Rights which provided free college education. Economists believ...

When teaching Holocaust studies to Dutch Muslim teenagers in Amsterdam, Mustafa Daher says he first has to defuse his pupils' own hostility toward Jews and Israel. "If I don't capture their interest, then I have done nothing. So I use the rising Islamophobia to help them connect to the persecution of the Jews," the seasoned educator says.

R. - the educator
2007-12-20 01:51:00
T., R., and I were coloring a few days ago. It is our favorite thing to do together. I could color for hours. And I sometimes do. It relaxes me. On stressful days, I am usually pulling out the coloring books and crayons or colored pencils. I may keep coloring long after the kids have moved on to tv or puzzles. The best conversations usually crop up while we are coloring. We all seem to just start talking. The banter flows. I learn a lot from my kids during our creative sessions. They loosen up and before you know it they are filling me in on all the happenings of their lives. It's so much better than when I ask, "What did you do today?" That question is usually answered with a, "Nothing."Yes, I believe bringing out the artist in them gets the gears in their minds turning. Not only do they talk to me, they make me laugh too. It's hilarious to find out what goes on in their little heads."Mommy, can I have the brown crayon?" asked R."Sure, sweetie!" I reply as I look over at the pictu...

I?ve used these guides for a number of years in my classes and it?s amazing to me how hard they are to find using Google, unless you choose your keywords very specifically.  These guides are free from http://www.shure.com and they contain a wealth of useful and succinct audio related information for music educators or those running theater performances in their schools. Granted, they hype their own mics in the literature, but can you blame them?  Shure has put out quality microphones for decades and the information in these PDFs is transferable to any audio solution that you might choose or own. Grab these PDFs from MusTech.net at our ESnips file server: Theater Performances PDF -Click It! Music Educators Audio Guide PDF -Click It! Target’s Salute to Educators
2007-12-04 18:49:00
I was just minding my own business, running my usual errands. I rushed through my neighborhood Target in search of paper towels, shampoo and hair clips for the girls, AA batteries for Sam, salty snacks, and a string of Christmas tree lights. And then, in the Holiday section, I saw this ornament and stopped dead in my tracks: I think my jaw actually dropped. I laughed out loud. People looked at me funny. Yes, that is an apostrophe. This kind of crap keeps me up at night. To make matters worse, the copy on the packaging boasts this little beauty: 10% of this purchase price goes to Support our teachers and classrooms. That’s right, the capital letter was right there, taunting me, in the middle of the fricking sentence. It was at the beginning of a second line of text, so some poor sap who dares call him or herself a proofreader felt it was appropriate for some sad reason, but ALL OF THIS, a punctuation and a capitalization error, ON A CHRISTMAS ORNAMENT MEANT TO HONOR TEACHERS...

Educators need a history lesson about the "oldest seagoing service"
2007-11-08 01:29:00
History of the Coast Guard:The United States Coast Guard, one of the country's five armed services, is a unique agency of the federal government. We trace our history back to 4 August 1790, when the first Congress authorized the construction of ten vessels to enforce tariff and trade laws, prevent smuggling, and protect the collection of the federal revenue. Known variously as the Revenue Marine and the Revenue Cutter Service, we expanded in size and responsibilities as the nation grew. The service received its present name in 1915 under an act of Congress when the Revenue Cutter Service merged with the Life-Saving Service. The nation then had a single maritime service dedicated to saving life at sea and enforcing the nation's maritime laws. The Coast Guard began to maintain the country's aids to maritime navigation, including operating the nation's lighthouses, when President Franklin Roosevelt authorized the transfer the Lighthouse Service to the Coast Guard in 1939. Later, in ...

The true power of multimedia lies in its ability to engage students' minds. Professional multimedia tools are too difficult to learn, too expensive, or both, and although many teachers and students use HyperStudio or PowerPoint to develop multimedia projects, these projects often lack tru...

My friend, Katie, from church invited me to join HEY -- Home Educators of Yuma. HEY now has everything listed on their website so now I know :-)I am glad to have the opportunity to fellowship with other moms and homeschool families. Our schedule is coming along pretty well now. The only day we don't have an outing scheduled is Monday and I'm determined to keep that day to ourselves. We need a day we can really focus on lessons and extra study time. Tuesdays we have my Ladies Fellowship/Bible study in the mornings and the kids art lessons in the evening. Wednesdays we have extra studytime for scripture memory and AWANA. Thursdays we have morning piano and more evening art lessons. Friday we will have the HEY group meeting with PE and any field trips that might come along. &nbs...
