Entre 1899 y 1900 cursó estudios de dibujo en una escuela de diseño comercial en la ciudad de Nueva York. Hacia el año 1901 abandona el dibujo por la pintura, que estudió en la Escuela de Arte hasta 1906. Desde ese año y hasta 1910 viaja en tres ocasiones a Europa. En 1915 comenzó su serie de aguafuertes llegando a realizar en los siguientes ocho años unas cincuenta. En 1923 inició sus acuarelas y al año entrante realizó su primera exposición de las mismas. En 1933 se concretó su primera retrospectiva en The Museum of Art of New York. Ese mismo año, compró un terreno en South Truro, Cape Cod, donde construyó su casa de verano. Currently at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the exhibition consists of about 60 oil paintings, 25 watercolors, and 14 prints.
