Morris "Moshe" Talansky of Woodmere, Long Island, was questioned by police in Israel about reported payments he made to Olmert in the 1990s, when the prime minister served as Jerusalem's mayor, according to the New York Post, which first reported the story Tuesday. The investigation, which emerged last week, threatens to embarrass Olmert as the country marks its 60th anniversary of independence on Thursday. Dozens of world leaders, including President Bush, are scheduled to join celebrations next week. An Israeli court has barred publication of most details of the case. Shortly thereafter, the United States said it was ready to work with members of the new Palestinian government "who are not from the ruling Hamas movement". In fact, the moves by Washington and Tel Aviv were expected. Israel has repeatedly called for the international community to uphold a boycott of the entire government until it "explicitly agrees to international demands" including recognition of the Jewish state and "renunciation of violence". That ignores the fact that Hamas was elected in a democratic process described by the United Nations and foreign observers as fair and transparent.
