And given that the global population is expected to rise by about 50% in the next 50 years, we’re going to need to figure out ways to keep what soil we have from degrading and even improve the fertility of our dirt if possible. By 2050, according to Rattan Lal, a professor of soil science at Ohio State University, “All the necessities of food, feed, fiber, and fuel are going to be met by less than one-tenth of an acre per person, on average. 2008-01-18 13:44:00 The El Nino phenomenon, which causes significant temperature changes in the surface waters of the Eastern Pacific, is a cyclical occurrence which usually takes its toll on various geographical regions every seven years or so, and wreaks major economical and environmental havoc on many parts of the world. Heavy flooding destroys homes and the water climate fluctuation has a detrimental effect on the fishing and agricultural industries on which so many of the hardest-hit developing regions depend. El Nino panic reached its apex in 1990-1994. While not considered as newsworthy a topic as it once was, El Nino still occurs on a regular basis, and scientists have began to explore whether the larger effects of global warming will exacerbate the ill effects of this unusual natural phenomenon.

To refresh the info, the El Nino current is a current that has started flowing only over the last few years and is a southward warm current that overpowers the cold northward current that stays here the rest of the year. Its called El Nino, because it occurs around the last week of December and when it does flow, it brings in huge amount of fish for the fishermen. El Nino translates as "Baby Jesus".By some cosmic coincidence I find myself in the same location at Christmas. I am happy to say that the El Nino is not flowing this year.
