Barack Obama's Poised For Big Electoral College Win - Zogby
2008-07-07 13:58:00
John Zogby, who's polls are generally considered to be the most accurate and fair, reports that Senator Barack Obama has an electoral college lead over John McCain that may be too much for the GOP representative, 273 to 158.
Direct Election v. Electoral College
2008-06-19 18:20:00
-By Nancy Salvato The constitutional amendment process is a complicated and lengthy affair. This is because we cannot be certain what consequences might arise from a seemingly minor alteration of the Constitution. To be sure, exchanging the electoral-vote system for direct election would adversely impact the entire constitutional and political structure of the United States. To begin, ...
Clinton Backer Points to Electoral College Votes as New Measure
2008-03-24 21:26:00
Hey guys!  I've got a great idea!  We're losing in just about every way, shape, and form to Barack Obama, so let's change the way we keep track of who's winning?  That way, we can give the illusion that we have a chance and that the race is tighter then it is! Brilliant! Senator Evan Bayh of Indiana, who backs Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton for president, support Mrs. Clinton or Senator Barack Obama" href="http://www.nytimes.com/20-08/03/24/us/politics/24campaign-.html?_r=2&oref=slogin&-oref=slogin">proposed another gauge Sunday by which superdelegates might judge whether to support Mrs. Clinton or Senator Barack Obama. He suggested that they consider the electoral votes of the states that each of them has won. ?So who carried the states with the most Electoral College votes is an important factor to consider because ultimately, that?s how we choose the president of the United States,? Mr. Bayh said on CNN?s ?Late Edition.? In a primary, of course, electoral ...
Clinton?s New Electoral College Argument

Another week, another benchmark for the Clinton campaign: IN Sen. Evan Bayh, a Hillary Clinton supporter and surrogate, suggested yesterday on CNN that Super Ds should use the Electoral College to determine which candidate they’ll back. ?So who carried the states with the most Electoral College votes is an important factor to consider because ultimately, that?s how ...SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "Clinton’s New Electoral College Argument", url: "http://2008central.net/2008/03-/24/clintons-new-electoral-coll-ege-argument/" });
DEMOCRATS IN ELECTORAL COLLEGE MELTDOWN
2008-03-13 17:32:00
Democrat concern about the Presidential election should now be morphing into outright panic. Just a day after moving the Blue State of Michigan from "likely democrat" to "leans democrat", Rasmussen Reports has moved it into the "toss-up" category. The revision was due to a huge drop in the expectation of Michigan staying blue among participants in the Rasmussen Markets. RR polling continues to show McCain with narrow leads over both Obama and Clinton. Michigan joins another huge battleground state- Ohio as "toss-ups". They may well be joined soon by a third biggie- Pennsylvania.Democrats most likely will need a sweep of the three to take the White House. They are defending in PA (21 Electoral Votes) and Mich. (17) while they narrowly lost Ohio (20). It is difficult to imagine Dems winning the WH without all 3, nearly impossible without 2 of the 3.~Sonlit
Eliminate The Electoral College
2008-02-11 06:49:00
Perhaps it's my youth speaking, but I don't believe this country should have an Electoral College. In a country whose government is of the people, by the people, for the people, I don't need some jerk I've never met telling me who the president and vice president should be.Dr. John R. Koza is just one of many supporting the Popular Vote to count as a deciding factor in our presidential elections. He is on the board of directors of National Popular Vote Inc., along with Barry Fadem and Chris Pearson. In a recent article, Koza said to a reporter about the organization's views:"We're just coming along and saying, 'Why not add up the votes of all 50 states and award the electoral votes to the 50-state winner?' I think that the candidate who gets the most votes should win the office."Unlike Koza, I believe in dumping the Electoral College completely. I see no use for it. Having an electoral college does not allow for an honest and independent country with a government "by the peo...
How to Fix the Electoral College
2008-02-05 14:43:00
For some time now, I have been saying that that the electoral college cannot be fixed short of a new constitutional convention.  I was wrong. The system we use to elect our president is broken.  For starters it is anti-democratic.  Let me illustrate.  Wyoming with a population of 522,830 has 3 electoral votes.  That is 1 elector for every 174,277 people.  On the other extreme, California, with

2008-01-04 18:03:00
In a move that brings a tear of joy to my eye, the State of New Jersey Senate approved a measure which would REQUIRE the state’s electors to actually vote based on the national popular vote winner. The electoral college is part of a system of indirect elements in the process of electing the president.  In ...

Quinnipiac University Poll Florida: Giuliani 46% Clinton 43% Again... another key battleground state where the most recent polling is showing Giuliani leading Clinton even as the national polling averages suggest that Hillary is leading. Is this an indication that we could see another 2000, where the Democrat wins the popular vote, but the Republican wins the electoral college vote? I would venture a guess that we are indeed in danger of such an event and I will explain exactly why. If the hypothetical match up turns out to be either Rudy Giuliani or John McCain versus Hillary Clinton you will certainly see a race where some of your hard core conservatives may stay home or vote third party. But in the tradeoff, the GOP would be putting up a candidate that would run much more moderate on the social issues and would make it much easier to paint Hillary as outside the mainstream. In other words, they would trade some of the hard core religious right support for a larger slice of...
Electoral College - it's still a race by states...
2007-10-24 18:25:00
Ohio: Giuliani 45% Clinton 43% The race for Ohio's 20 Electoral College votes hasn?t changed much in the last couple of months. In fact, the latest Rasmussen Reports telephone polls shows that voting in Ohio next year might be just as close as it was in 2004. Ohio was that state that Kerry fans pointed to as the one that cost them the election. Likely it was pointed to because of the closeness of the contest, where Bush won by only 2%. One would assume that if Hillary is going to do better than Kerry (I read one pundit suggest she will win 35 states) one would think it would start with the states that John Kerry almost won. The fact that she is polling at 43% against Giuliani in Ohio does not give me the warm and fuzzies that she is on her way to an electoral landslide.
Stephen Colbert: Presidential Candidate!?
2007-10-18 09:10:00
Well, I’m SURE by now you all have heard - Stephen Colbert wants to run for President, at least in South Carolina, his home state.  So, let’s analyze the possibilities with this: Colbert runs in South Carolina - not largely affecting the Republicans, probably hurting McCain and Paul the most, due to their popularity with younger ...

Republican swift boaters decided that the easiest way to win the upcoming election was to split the Electoral College in California. By doing so they would be able to steal the 2008 election. read more

North Carolina AND California
2007-07-31 20:34:00
Earlier I spoke about the North Carolina proposal to split their Electoral Votes by district. I didn't mention that I didn't think it was a good idea, as I don't like Maine and Nebraska doing it either, because, I think if it's implementing in one state, it should be implemented in all fifty. Here's why...California.A prominent California lawyer with connections to the state GOP is looking to change the winner-take all rule for the Golden State and allot the state's 55 electoral votes by who wins each Congressional district. That means the GOP could win at least 20 fo the state's 55 electoral votes, which would almost guarantee a GOP victory nationwide.Democrats need California to win. Loosing 20 electoral votes in California, and winning all the states Kerry won, would mean Democrats would have to make that up by winning most or all of the GOP leaning swing states; Florida (25), Ohio (18), North Carolina (15), Virginia (13), Colorado (7), Iowa (7), New Mexico (5) and/or Nevad...

The beginning of the end of the Electoral College?

Time To Dropout Of The Electoral College?
2007-04-17 17:41:00
Last week Maryland took steps to bypass the Electoral College, opting to give its electoral votes to the candidate that wins the national popular vote (only taking effect if or when enough states also follow). Hawaii has sent a similar bill to its governor, while the idea has been rejected by California, North Dakota, and Montana in the past year.Gore In 2000Criticism of the Electoral College grew sharply after the 2000 election, in which Al Gore won the national popular vote, but became the fourth man to do so and fail to become president (Andrew Jackson in 1824, Samuel Tilden in 1876, and Grover Cleveland in 1888--though the losses of Jackson and Tilden were due more to suspect political dealings than the faultiness of the EC). Gore supports have argued that had a popular vote plan been in place, Al Gore would have become president in 2000. However, that's not necessarily true. In fact, no one really knows how a campaign decided by the national popular vote would actually play ou...
Should We Finally Graduate From The Electoral College?
2007-04-09 22:34:00
The other day, David Sirota had an article on the Huffpost, THE PRO DEMOCRACY WILDFIRE IN AMERICA’S STATES. The thrust of his piece is the discrepancy between what the powers-that-be in New York and Washington want, and what individual states are doing. Under the proposal being pushed by National Popular Vote, Fair Vote and the Progressive States Network, states’ electoral votes would automatically be awarded to the winner of the national popular vote regardless of the state’s individual vote. The system, which would create a national popular election, would take effect only if states representing a majority of the nation’s 538 electoral votes approved such legislation. Big surprise - Beltway elites are against the idea, with the dean of the Washington press corps, David Broder, actually writing that the electoral college’s anti-democratic fundamentals are a “formula for healthy politics.” Such hysterical, substance-free arguments are yet mo...
