Nissan Leaf Electric Car Leapfrogs
2009-08-17 17:35:00 Nissan is really trying to go full bore with its new Leaf electric car. It will allow you to go up to 100 miles on a single charge. But will people buy it? Nissan will be putting a lithium ion battery into the Leaf. Now, before you groan. Nissan is cutting the size in half while also increasing power and range twice. Pretty impressive. The batteries will take around 16 hours to recharge, unless you are doing a higher power charge, like the video below demonstrates. They are also saying that it will be competitively priced, whatever that means.

Renault?s electric car debuts in Tel Aviv
2008-05-12 00:39:00 It could be the quickest vehicles to go from concept to a public, drivable prototype in automotive history. As previewed, "Israelis got a first demonstration Sunday of the electric car that developers hope will revolutionize transportation in the country and serve as a pilot for the rest of the world," began the report in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz. A parking lot in Tel Aviv hosted the demonstration of the Project Better Place/Renault collaboration. Acceleration was said to be impressive and the silent drive familiar to proponents of electric vehicles was noted in the silver, normal looking sedan. The car is expected to have a range of 125 miles, more than sufficient for most drivers in a nation that's no more than 60 miles wide and 260 long. Haaretz reports that several hundred cars will begin appearing on Israel roads in 2009, with sales to begin in late 2010. [Haaretz]

Pininfarina to unveil its electric car this Autumn
2008-05-06 23:38:00 It has been a while but there is finally news of the Pininfarina / Bolloré electric car project. First the good news. According to Channel 4 it will be sold in America as well as Europe and Japan. The bad news? There is no bad news, only more juicy tidbits like; the concept will debut at the Paris Motor Show in October and once we get our heads around that, the production model reveal is scheduled for the Geneva Auto Show in the Spring. Like that? There's more! The supermini with Pininfarina badging (not pictured above) should seat four and cost in the neighborhood of €15,000. That's $23,295.75 in American greenbacks at today's exchange rate.Although it will be powered by the Bolloré battery from France it will be innately Italian with the Pininfarina-designed coachwork sculpting being performed at its San Giorgio factory. Electric Car Idea

NICE predicts electric car sales increase under new London mayor
2008-05-05 06:26:00 Now that the city of London has voted out "red Ken" in favor of Conservative candidate Boris Johnson, it is expected that the congestion charge scheme may undergo some changes. One electric car company, NICE (No Internal Combustion Engine), is showing no fear and is sounding positive about the future with their new mayor. They are even predicting increased business in the coming year. Julian Wilford, co-founder of the London-based company, states, "We know that Boris recognises the many benefits of owning an electric car," in a press release that extends an invitation to the politician to give their shop a visit as well as discuss their upcoming plans. Perhaps they read his "colorful" opinion piece in the Telegraph in defense of that other London-centric electric car, the G-Wiz. And what of those future plans? They plan on adding yet more models to their already-varied vehicle line-up which includes the Vectrix and Mega Multi Truck. For more a more detailed look into the future hit ...

Pininfarina raises capital for electric car project
2008-05-01 18:36:00 In partnership with French industrial group Bollore and Indian automaker Tata, Italian design house Pininfarina is preparing to launch its new electric minicar by 2010. Initial production of the car, which will be sold across Europe, Japan and in the United States, is scheduled to begin at 2,000 units, mounting up to peak manufacturing at 15,000 vehicles annually by 2012. Italian design houses like Pininfarina and Bertone, however, have been struggling to make ends meet. While the latter struggles to emerge from bankruptcy, Pininfarina is raising 100 million euros in capital for the new electric car project by selling shares. The Pininfarina family will be selling an undetermined part of its 55 percent majority stake to some of the biggest names in the Italian automotive industry: Piero Ferrari, the scion and vice-president of the Maranello-based sportscar-maker; Alberto Bombassei, chairman of Brembo brakes; and the Marsiaj family, founders of seatbelt manufacturer Sabelt. The Th!nk electric car enters production.
2008-04-29 10:43:00 Almost exactly one year ago we posted on the little G-wiz electric car, we'd found on London's streets. Now we've discovered that the Norwegian electric car project, Th!nk, is about to enter into production of its City model. The company hopes to produce 1,200 cars in its Aurskog, Norway, plant this year. Meanwhile Th!nk apparently has secured financial backing from US partners and are planning to set up a plant in California, too. It has been a bumpy road for Th!nk since the first prototype was introduced in 1991. The TH!NK City model (in its fifth incarnation above) first entered production in 1999, when the Ford Motor Company was a major shareholder and sunk some USD 150 million into the operation. Ford pulled out after four years, and the company was more or less put to pasture. Norwegian investors, however, supplied fresh funds in 2006, and now they are ready to start production again. If the Th!nk lives up to its promises it could be a serious competitor to the Smart city c...

Charge your electric car batteries in the house

Indian clock maker to challenge Tata Nano with electric car
2008-04-15 21:57:00 The Tata Nano made headlines as the world's least expensive new car and it's now facing a new challenger that's battery powered. The Ajanta Group is better known for making clocks but they also build electric scooters and bikes. The Gujarat-based Ajanta wants to get into the car business with an electric vehicle that's cheaper than the Nano. Ajanta group director Jaysukh Patel seems to think they can just transfer their electric bike technology to a car and produce 70 percent of the parts in-house, saving money. That seems a little unrealistic - even in India - unless what they are planning is closer to a neighborhood electric vehicle than a real car. For a price under $2,500 the car will almost certainly be relegated to lead acid batteries and very short range. It will be interesting to see how Ajanta's new EV compares to the Reva G-Wiz which is also built in India. Gallery: Tata Nano: The People's Car[Source: Times of India]

Finnish project aims to create open source electric car conversions
2008-04-12 19:33:00 A project in Finland is aiming to use the power of open-source to gather a critical mass of people interested in converting cars to electric power. The idea is get enough people who are interested in doing the project so that the cost can be brought down to a point where it becomes affordable. Whether the target of 500 orders is sufficient make the cost of a converted Toyota Corolla comparable to the price of the original car is debatable. It seems like they would need much larger volumes than that to achieve economies of scale. The open-source part of the project involves bringing interested and skilled people in to contribute to the engineering and development of the conversions kits. If people would donate their time that would certainly reduce a lot of overhead cost, but there are no guarantees that you could actually get the right people involved to make this viable in any kind of reasonable time frame. After all, most open-source software projects take many years to finally re...
