Disadvantages of Hybrid Electric Vehicles By C.l. Hendricks
2008-05-28 20:22:00
There are many disadvantages of hybrid electric vehicles. First of all, hybrid electric vehicles are not all-electric vehicles. They do require gasoline to drive.Hybrid electric vehicles use regenerative braking to get their electricity. The gas energy is captured off of the brakes and stored as electricity. All electric vehicles are a much better alternative in terms of cutting down smog. There are several available today.Hybrid electric vehicles are also inferior to hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Many automotive companies are working on hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in production now. Very soon Chevy will come out with a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. While hybrid electric vehicles are low smog emission vehicles, they do produce emissions. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles produce water as their emission, making them far superior to hybrid electric vehicles. Or better yet take public transportation in a city that uses hydrogen fuel cell buses.Although hybrid electric vehicles are readily availa...

China encourages electric vehicles on new web channel
2008-03-20 22:39:00
I was just catching up on my China mountain bike news when this photo of a little electric car caught my eye. The story it illustrated was even more interesting as it announced the launching of a new channel on China Central Television (CCTV). In an attempt to improve air quality and traffic congestion in its cities, electric bicycles, cars and other EVs will be promoted on the government's own web channel and will feature news and interviews with "governor's, environmental experts and electric vehicle companies", according to the post.If you're interested in what the Chinese are up to with their plan for world-wide electric vehicle domination, you can check out the channel for yourself here. If you are like me and can't read Chinese you might want to try the soft poetry of the Google-translated version. If you're to busy for that, just watch this space and we'll keep you up to date on any pertinent news. [Source: China MTB]
E-One Moli Energy Corp exhibits li-ion battery for electric vehicles

Yup, the E-One Moli Energy Corp, perhaps better known as the folks who the power in cordless Milwaukee Tools, are jumping into the automotive saddle. </silly Western babble> During their 10th anniversary celebrations the other day in Taiwan, the company took the wraps off a li-ion battery intended for the hybrid and electric car markets. What they didn't reveal was any details about the new product so specific information on chemistry, energy density and such are still unknown. The company does make several different chemistries such as LiMn2O4 and LiFePO4 and produces both cylindrical and prismatic cells. I'll keep my ear to the track and let you know when I hear more.[Source: Businesswire]

New battery to rev up hybrid electric vehicles
2008-01-21 10:29:00
A new hybrid car battery called "UltraBattery" has been developed by CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Research Organization) in Australia, which lasts longer, costs less and is more powerful than current technologies used in hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs).   According to CSIRO officials, UltraBattery combines a supercapacitor and a lead acid battery in a single unit, creating a hybrid car battery.   The UltraBattery has the ability to provide and absorb charge rapidly during vehicle acceleration and braking, making it particularly suitable for HEVs, which rely on the electric motor to meet peak power needs during acceleration and can recapture energy normally wasted through braking to recharge the battery.   "The UltraBattery is a leap forward for low emission transport and uptake of HEVs," said David Lamb, who leads low emissions transport research with the Energy Transformed National Research Flagship.   "Previous tests show the ...

Green Cars - Electric Vehicles
2008-01-11 16:08:00
With the rising cost of a barrel of oil, the number of electric vehicles traveling US roads and highways is quickly growing. With its reputation for protecting the environment, California has the greatest concentration of the alternative fuel vehicles. Electric vehicless do not produce muffler emissions, but generators  producing the electricity used to charge EV batteries do emit air pollutants. An EV’s electric motor converts electricity—usually from a battery pack—into mechanical power that runs the vehicle. After a certain vehicle driving range, however, EV batteries must be recharged. Availability Several major auto manufacturers are producing high-performance EVs, including passenger cars, minivans, sport utility vehicles, pickup trucks, and buses. Auto manufacturers also are beginning to sell “hybrid” vehicles that combine an electric motor with a separate gasoline or diesel engine. Hybrid vehicles can more than double the gas mileage of conventional gasoline- or d...

What's Going On With Electric Vehicles
2007-11-24 01:26:00
Here is a little insight as to what the real story is with Electric Vehicle Technology. Back in the late eighties, Honda with Panasonic, developed the Nickel Metal Hydride Battery for Electric Vehicles. The batteries gave the vehicle, for the average driver, a range of about 120 miles per charge. Careful drivers got up to 180 miles per charge. In 1994, General Motors bought control of the battery production. They did not put these batteries into their Electric Vehicle, The EV1 (1996-99). Instead, they installed the inferior Delco lead acid batteries. The range of the GM-EV1 was drastically reduced and GM declared that the Electric Vehicle Experiment was a faliure. You may recall that G,M. never offered the EV1 for sale. It was only available as a leased vehicle. In fact, none of seven the biggest auto manufacturers have ever brought an EV to the market for sale to the public. In any case, G.M. then sold the rights to the Nickel Metal Hydride Battery to, none other than, Texaco Oil. ...

Hybrid Electric Vehicles - Pros and Cons
2007-10-18 21:37:00
By Levi QuinnIn the past few years, hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) have been getting a lot of press, both good and bad. As with any new technology-that is, any technology newly offered to the public-there are proponents and opponents to the wide use of HEVs. Pros and cons are bandied about freely, and it can be difficult for the average person to weed out any useful information. Here is a brief, simple synopsis of the advantages and disadvantages of HEVs.The most obvious benefit of HEVs is lowered environmental impact. A vehicle that's powered solely by electricity produces absolutely no emissions. Admittedly, a hybrid vehicle does emit some carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, but only from the gasoline-driven engine. If your vehicle is powered by electricity 50% of the time, it will reduce harmful exhaust emissions by 50%.Hybrid vehicles are quieter, and cause less noise pollution-an important consideration in urban areas. The engine only runs when the vehicle is being...

Tesla Electric Vehicles Won't Go to Franchisers
2007-05-14 16:33:00
Tesla Motors, maker of the hot and hotly anticipated $92,000 electric Roadster, will sell its products through factory-owned stores, not traditional dealerships. The company will put the first cars on sale in Santa Monica, California, in November, then move to major cities including San Francisco, New York, Chicago, and eventually Denver, Boston and other major markets.Automotive News quoted Tesla Marketing Vice President Darryl Siry as saying, "We can't hand over the car to an independent franchiser" who would "spend his time apologizing for the car's shortcomings." Therefore the company plans to run its own sales outlets, which he said would be more like an Apple computer store than a traditional vehicle dealership.Bloomberg reports 400 orders have already been placed for the first model, the two-seat Tesla Roadster, with California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and actor George Clooney on the list.A second model, the WhiteStar sedan is due in 2010.
