Elias Rankings Update
2009-09-23 20:42:00 At the end of each season, The Elias Sports Bureau ranks all MLB players numerically based on a bunch of stats. Every player is categorized in one of five position groups and by league. The rankings cover a two-year time period. They are used to determine whether free agents are Type A, Type B, or neither. If you'd like a reminder on how draft pick compensation works, read up here. Eddie Bajek of Detroit Tigers Thoughts reverse-engineered the Elias Rankings last year. Eddie's incredible work was made possible in large part due to information provided by ESPN's Keith Law. Eddie is now providing the rankings exclusively to MLB Trade Rumors. Random thoughts: The Yankees could get nice consolation prizes in the form of first-round picks if they lose Jorge Posada or Mariano Rivera. For example if the Mets sign Posada the Yankees get their #22 overall pick. If the Phils sign Rivera the Yanks get their #24 overall pick. Would the Red Sox offer arbitration to Curt Schilling, even if they're lukewarm about keeping him? He's a Type A. 2007-08-14 14:05:00 Finally, a little better news for the Gresini Honda team. Both Marco Melandri and Toni Elias passed fitness tests on Monday, and have been cleared to ride at Brno. Elias is still recovering from a broken femur and Melandri is still suffering with a broken ankle he suffered at Laguna Seca. The Gresini duo spent two hours riding Honda CBR 600 sports bikes around the Misano circuit, to test their condition, which revealed that they are both capable of riding, albeit with some pain. The test was doubly useful, as the Misano track used for the fitness test is the location for the San Marino Grand Prix on September 2nd, and is unknown territory for most of the MotoGP paddock, the series not having visited there since Wayne Rainey's fateful crash in 1993, which left him in a wheelchair.

Gresini Honda's Toni Elias, who suffered a spiral fracture of the thigh at Assen, has said that he is determined to return at Brno, although he believes he will only be able to ride at 60%. The young Spaniard is still on crutches, having difficulty walking, and realizes that a return will be difficult and painful, but accepts that as part and parcel of being a MotoGP rider: "We know that it comes with the job, and that if you want to ride, then sometimes you have to put up with the pain." 2007-07-02 16:35:00 The redoubtable Italian site GPOne.com is reporting that American Honda has received an e-mail request from Honda Europe inquiring about the possibility of Jake Zemke taking Toni Elias' place on the Gresini Honda for the US Grand Prix at Laguna Seca. Zemke is currently riding a CBR1000RR for American Honda in AMA Superbike, and is in 3rd place in that championship. That is better than it sounds, as Zemke is the first rider behind the tediously dominant Yoshimura Suzuki pair of Ben Spies and Mat Mladin, whose bikes are basically a second a lap quicker at ever track the AMA visits. 2007-06-29 14:42:00 Ronald ten Kate, head of the Ten Kate Racing World Superbikes and World Supersport team, has ruled out any chance that James Toseland could replace Toni Elias at Gresini Honda, according to Autosport.com. Toseland's team boss emphasized that the young Briton's main priority is winning the World Superbike championship, which he is currently leading. Although Toseland's name immediately came up after Elias crashed out, sharing both a bike manufacturer and a sponsor with the unfortunate Spaniard, riding in MotoGP would be a high-risk strategy for Toseland, with the potential to both do poorly on what is still one of the worst bikes in the paddock, and lose out on his World Superbike title by not being concentrated on one goal. Elias is said to have suffered a spiral fracture, or torsion fracture. This is a very serious kind of fracture, which takes a long time to heal. Elias could be out for up to 11 months, ending his season, and possibly much of next season as well. UPDATED Toni Elias Breaks Leg At Assen - Out Until Brno
2007-06-28 14:09:00 Gresini Honda's Toni Elias crashed heavily during the first free practice session at Assen, breaking his leg. He is out for the rest of the weekend, according to autosport.com. Elias crashed at exactly the same part of the circuit where Valentino Rossi broke his wrist last year, the fast section into the Ramshoek corner before the final GT chicane. No word as yet of a replacement. ~~~ UPDATED ~~~ Dutch news site Racesport.nl is reporting that Elias will be out until Brno. Elias has missed the last two years of racing here with injuries, and his return was very ill-starred indeed. This leaves the question of a replacement. The most obvious replacement for Elias would be another Hannspree Honda rider. The most obvious name which springs to mind is of course James Toseland.
