Elijah Dukes Lands On 15-Day DL
2008-03-31 08:45:00
Blessed with all the talent in the world, Elijah Dukes has not made good on the promise of his talent. It appears that once again, the outfielder will miss some time and an opportunity, but this time it is not a result of a team-levied suspension. A tight right hamstring has Dukes on the 15-Day DL, after an 0-2 performance in the Nationals season opener. Dukes hammered 10 homeruns in just 52 games...

2008-03-31 07:02:00
Washington Nationals left fielder Elijah Dukes was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday after leaving the season opener with a tight right hamstring. The Nationals replaced Dukes on the roster by recalling right-handed pitcher Chris Schroder from Triple-A Columbus. Dukes left the 3-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves after grounding out in the fifth. Read ...

2008-03-15 06:39:00
Willy Mo Pena will be out at least 4 weeks with a strained oblique. It wouldn’t be surprising if he’s out much longer; Pena hasn’t appeared in more than 110 Games since 2002. His injury frees up an outfield spot for the 5 category prospect: Elijah Dukes. PECOTA projects some lofty numbers for Elijah, and the ...

Young Elijah Dukes has been in continual cloud of controversy since he's started in professional baseball due to his off-the-field activities; however, SBF and the African Queen from the NATS320 had the opportunity to chat with him while he was finishing his workout during spring training on Saturday. An interesting read and it gives you a new perspective of a young man who's been in the press for seemingly all the wrong reasons.Link: The Nats 320 Blog
?I know I have to get it together?: Elijah Dukes arrives at Washington Nati
2008-02-21 02:02:00
Elijah Dukes sat there, looked straight ahead, and spoke evenly about being a new man, sounding as earnest as anyone with all sorts of behavioral and legal problems in his past and present and two skeletons on his shirt possibly could. Dukes reported to Washington Nationals spring training Wednesday and took questions during a hastily ...
Judge dismisses injunction against Nationals? Elijah Dukes (AP)
2007-12-18 18:07:00
A woman’s request for a restraining order against Washington Nationals outfielder Elijah Dukes was dismissed after she failed to show for a hearing Tuesday. Dukes, who was traded last month by the Tampa Bay Rays to the Nationals, appeared in court alone. He replied “No” when Judge Raul C. Palomino Jr. asked whether he had ...
Washington Nationals Fans Are Not Happy About Elijah Dukes At All...
2007-12-04 20:21:00
As a fan in the Washington area, I see there are there a lot of people, and I mean a lot of people, that are not happy online.A good barometer of how fans feel come from wbsites and blogs, and it is almost universal that people in the Washington region give a big thumbs down to the move.It looks like Rays' fans are elated that Dukes is out of their hair; however, a lot of Nationals fans are livid and some outright fearful that he'll do something crazy.I read a lot of blogs, and besides the sordid Michael Vick affair I've not seen this much anger towards an athlete, incident or a transaction in quite a while. As a baseball move, I think the Nationals once again got a another potential boon providing Dukes can progress as a ballplayer and live up to his potential. He's only 23, blessed with great athleticism, and power; thus, if he can lay regularly, he may be an effective, if not very good player. However, he needs to be a lot more selective at the plate and be patient, but the to...
Elijah Dukes Trade
2007-12-04 03:56:00
I recently wrote an article for Big Dawg Baseball (behind the wall) analyzing the Garza/Young trade. It was hardly an analyzation (if that’s a word) of the deal, but more an indictment of the clowns involved. I mentioned the three gang bangers, Young, Dukes, and Upton, that directed many-a-tyrade at Friedman and the rest of the D-Rays front office. Well, two down, one to go! My indictment on the deal with the Twins was more “cancer treatment” than about filling holes in the lineup. Garza too is not at all removed from the cry baby antics of a pampered brat! But, after reading that Dukes was forceably restrained from going after an umpire last week, and then leaving his Winter Ball team to be with his family - just screams loser, punk, cancer! Pick one! Finally, however, Friedman and Company is taking some action, and creating a dugout scenario that more replicates a baseball TEAM than a mid-day party to celebrate last night’s drive-by shooting! Dukes will soo...

2007-12-03 22:58:00
The Tampa Bay Rays traded another troubled outfielder Monday, sending Elijah Dukes to the Washington Nationals for minor league pitcher Glenn Gibson. Due in part to others being injured, Dukes began this season as Tampa Bay’s starting center fielder. The rookie batted .190 with 10 homers and 21 RBIs in 52 games. Read the full story.

Elijah Dukes Coming To My Backyard: He'll Be a National, It Looks Like...
2007-12-03 21:01:00
According to the Nationals Journal on WashingtonPost.com: "Dave Sheinin just confirmed what I've been trying to for the last couple hours -- that troubled Tampa Bay outfielder Elijah Dukes has been dealt to the Washington Nationals. We do not yet know who was dealt in return.More in a minute."Oh yea. I'll give Jim Bowden credit, he's got balls. The natives in Washington D.C. will not be happy. Perhaps a change in scenery will be good for the young guy, and perhaps he can turn his life around -- he does have the talent, and I guess it supersedes anything else in life. This is a high-reward/low-risk move unless he gets in trouble with the law again.
The Idiot File: The Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Elijah Dukes; Does Talent Supe
2007-08-03 19:11:00
Ah, the benefits of being an athlete. Will someone please tell me why this guy (pictured above) is still offered the privledge of employment with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays?Oops, let's not forget -- talent supercedes morality in sports....Read the report here: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/n-ews/story?id=2959870from the AP, the block quote I love:Earlier this summer, Devil Rays principal owner Stuart Sternberg defended his decision to deactivate Dukes rather than release him."This will pass, hopefully, with a very positive outcome for him," the owner said at the time. "If it doesn't, our reputation will remain intact as an organization that's trying to help somebody or did what they think they could to help somebody." Now, if he were batting .200, and didn't have a body of throughbred, would the 'Rays be giving us lip service? Of course not!If I were the Devil Rays, cut ties with him now!You have a talented team, and he is NOT WORTH THE TROUBLE!
Elijah Dukes To Stay Put Today
2007-07-31 18:36:00
Marc Lancaster of the Tampa Tribune says it's his understanding that there's "no chance" Elijah Dukes will be moved today.  That makes sense; Dukes hasn't taken part in baseball activities for over a month.  He should be traded in the offseason.
Scott Olsen Arrested
2007-07-21 23:06:00
So Scott Olsen is in trouble again. After fighting Miguel Cabrera and losing. After fighting Randy Messenger and getting clocked. After going after Sergio Mitre, and getting suspended, Olsen mixed things up last night and went after an opponent that didn't play for the Florida Marlins.Olsen got in a fight-- with the Florida Police. According to the AP Report, the following transpired late last night:"An officer clocked [Olsen] driving 48 mph in a 35 mph zone and attempted to pull him over at about 3:40 a.m.Olsen continued to drive about one mile, running a stop sign before stopping at his Aventura home. The pitcher got out of his car and sat down on a plastic chair in front of his home. When backup officers arrived and tried to arrest him, Bentolila said Olsen kicked at the officers, who used a stun gun on the 6-foot-5 pitcher."It should be interesting to see what kind of reaction this will get with the press and league. With Olsen's rap sheet of fighting everything and anything tha...
Israel Baseball League
2007-07-06 13:51:00
Looking for something to pass the time while heading into the weekend? If so, I recommend checking out the Israel Baseball League?s website. I am fascinated by the league and its players. For example, Bet Shemesh Blue Sox catcher Lukas Brenowitz is pursuing a Masters Degree in Middle Eastern Strategic Studies and Arabic at Tel Aviv University. I think this may be the same degree that John Kruk earned. Representing Virginia Beach and the University of Virginia, outfielder Sean Slaugher?s favorite movies are Godfather II and Grandma?s Boy. That seems like an unlikely double-feature. Tel Aviv Lightning pitcher Daniel Kaufman is ?a crafty pitcher from Georgia, played baseball at Emory University with fellow IBL'ers, Aaron Rosdal and Bryan Langbord...helped the Eagles reach the post-season twice in 2004 and 2006...the team was ranked #1 in the country in 2006...looks forward to playing in Israel and meeting a nice Jewish girl to bring home to mom.? This bio is close to that of Ta...
Elijah Dukes Demoted
2007-06-22 23:31:00
We knew something was coming...the Devil Rays demoted outfielder Elijah Dukes today and also placed him on the temporary inactive list (ie, no pay). A trade or release is forthcoming.  According to the Tampa Tribune, the Rays spent yesterday exploring potential deals.  You'd think with millions of dollars hanging in the balance, Dukes would just relax and focus on baseball with his new team.
Marlins Still Like Elijah Dukes
2007-06-21 19:10:00
The Marlins have flirted with the idea of acquiring Elijah Dukes for center field for at least a few months.  Back in March, Jayson Stark mentioned the idea.  At that point, Peter Gammons felt that the Fish would not trade young pitching to get their center fielder. Now they may be able to get Dukes for next to nothing.  The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that the Marlins have Dukes on the radar if they can get him for little.  Any breathing reliever might do the trick.  If the Marlins think, for some reason, that they can alleviate Dukes' off-the-field issues, it could be a fantastic example of buying low. By the way, one source tells me that the Nationals are definitely not interested in Dukes. A less exciting but safe option for Florida would be Brady Clark, who recently became a free agent.  The Marlins have some interest.
Elijah Dukes: It's Official
2007-06-20 08:16:00
Holy shit!!! How the fucking fuck did Elijah Dukes make it so deep into the major leagues before being everybody figured out dude is bat shit motherfucking crazy? I hate to steal Parkes's thunder on... Foul-mouthed, booze-loving and "smarter than you" fans of the Toronto Blue Jays follow their team's progress in the American League East.
Elijah Dukes
2007-06-18 18:16:00
Since the latest news on Elijah Dukes, he has only had two pinch-hit opportunities.  With Rocco Baldelli already on the DL and BJ Upton joining him, the Devil Rays had no centerfield option.  Joe Maddon moved Delmon Young from RF to CF, and Young promptly expressed his displeasure.  Despite this, Dukes remains on the bench. Personally, I don't think Dukes deserves the privilege of a major league salary, but that doesn't mean I haven't gone to bat for him as a fantasy asset.  However, I am no longer interested in doing so. This brings me to a topic I expect most keeper league participants deal with.  How do you value a player like Dukes especially if you want to get him off the list of players who you route on towards success (definition:  those players on your team)? More generally, how do you deal with a player who can be a fantasy asset but whose character makes him undesirable?
Elijah Dukes Just Kicked Your Daddie's Ass
2007-06-13 21:11:00
A masterful tidbit comes from the generally incorrigible Jon Heyman?s ?Daily Scoop? yesterday: "And there's another more outrageous story going around about how one young Devil Ray peeked his head into the Twins' family room at the Metrodome after a recent victory at Minnesota and

I am going to go out on a limb here and say Dukes is probably done in Tampa.
Elijah Dukes: Saying Sorry Cures All?
2007-05-30 12:52:00
Well, athletes certainly have more rights and are given more chances than pretty much everyone in society. From ESPN: Troubled Tampa Bay outfielder Elijah Dukes apologized Tuesday for allegations contained in a published report revealing his estranged wife sought a restraining order after being threatened by the 22-year-old rookie. Dukes spoke briefly before Tuesday night's game against the Detroit Tigers and initially bungled remarks that were not prepared in advance when he mistakenly apologized "to the organization for sticking with me in a situation like this." The Devil Rays issued a clarification in which Dukes said he misspoke because he was nervous. "I would like to apologize to my family, teammates, the fans and the organization for the distraction that this situation has caused," Dukes said in the prepared clarification. "I would like to thank them for standing by me and hope that my family and I can move on and put this behind us." Of courser, he was kept out a few ...
Elijah Dukes Dodges a Bullet; Pray His Wife Does
2007-05-27 06:07:00
Though he sent his wife an electronic picture of a pistol and threatened to kill her and their two children, outfielder Elijah Dukes will keep the devil in Devil Rays by being restored to the lineup at the expense of infielder Jorge Cantu.Though the team will be forced to make a roster move Monday to make room for the return of third baseman Akinora Iwamura from the disabled list, preliminary indications are that Cantu will take the fall. Expect Cantu to be sent down to Triple A Durham while Dukes will continue to play despite his most recent in a lengthy list of transgressions including drug infractions and various acts of hostility with violent overtones.Confronted by reporters after wife NiShea Gilbert swore out a protection order against him, Dukes declined to offer an apology, regrets or sorrows over the incident. To the contrary, he was described as upbeat and jovial, and hit his ninth homerun in his first game back after temporarily being benched. Though he has a batting aver...

Elijah Dukes (OF-TB)
2007-05-25 07:04:00
Dukes was not in the starting lineup on Thursday for the second straight game as he deals with some personal issues. However, manager Joe Maddon expected Dukes will play in the weekend series against Seattle. Dukes has eight home runs, which is the most among AL rookies.
The Idiot File: Elijah Dukes
2007-05-23 19:03:00
For a guy with so much talent (which 99% of us would envy), Elijah Dukes just doesn?t know any better ? does he? Once again, Elijah may have found himself in more trouble than he realizes. At only 22, he?s been tapped as one of the future young stars in the game, but now that could be in peril. Well, Elijah Dukes wife, NiShea Gilbert filed for a restraining order against her husband and said she fears for her life, The St. Petersburg Times reported Wednesday. NiShea Gilbert, a middle-school teacher, said that Dukes allegedly burst into her classroom at lunchtime in April. A frightened Gilbert then ran to the principal and got a deputy, who banished Dukes from the school. Gilbert told a Florida court that Dukes threatened to kill her and sent her a photo of a handgun to her cell phone. Gilbert played a voice mail allegedly from Dukes for the newspaper. "You dead, dawg. I ain't even [expletive]. Your kids, too." Gilbert has filed requests for protection twice in the last mont...
Brandon Morrow, Elijah Dukes, Ryan Howard
2007-04-15 04:05:00
I began to wonder whether the Mariners were getting ready to send rookie RP Brandon Morrow to the minors given he has appeared in only two games this season.  This decision would tacitly acknowledge the team made an error in taking him Northwest as camps broke, but regular work at AAA would serve him better than once-a-week, one-inning work would.  After all, his total professional experience prior to this season was 16 innings - 13 of which were in rookie ball. Then I saw he finished todays 8-3 win against the the Rangers - by striking out the side, and my assessment began to seem premature.  It still may be, but any one inning/three strikeout relief appearance in the 9th inning of a win will get roto-tongues wagging. * Including tonight's 0-3 start, Tampa Bay's rookie OF Elijah Dukes has gone 3-23 with one double and no RBIs since homering in his first two MLB games.  Or put another way, since he was added to fantasy teams en masse.  If you are one of th...
Elijah Dukes
2007-04-04 21:47:00
On November 3rd, I noted that Tampa Bay's Elijah Dukes would be a 2007 sleeper no matter your league's depth.  All he needed was 400 ABs.  On December 5th, I advised everyone to not let anything dissuade one from treating Dukes as an elite 2007 prospect. Following Elijah Dukes' Opening Day HR at Yankee stadium in his first official at-bat, the flood of articles should begin arriving.  ESPN.com's Amy K. Nelson has the first and is a great read if you're unfamilar with Mr.  Dukes' background.  Here is the link. I have clearly been a proponent of Elijah Dukes as a baseball player.  His combination of power and speed along with an rapidly-improving plate discipline makes him an obvious favorite of fantasy players everywhere.  By selecting him three season ago before he broke into the mainstream of prospect touting, I am also vested in seeing him do well as a tribute to my fantasy scouting ability. However, I still find his story compelling.  ...
