The worse-than-expected figures are likely to be used as ammunition in the postal conglomerate's ongoing battle with unions about pay and thousands of potential job cuts. The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has given the Royal Mail less than four weeks to reach an agreement over postal workers' pay and conditions. The CWU called off the latest round of proposed postal strikes ealier this month after talks with Royal Mail, which confirmed both parties would reach an agreement over the workers' pay and modernisation dispute by 4 September. Two weeks of continuous disruption has already been caused to mail services across the country, following strike action last month. Royal Mail reported an operating loss of £12m last year after profits of £197m in 2005-06.

Negotiations between the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) and unions over the issue of direct employment have been dragging on for months. Unions have warned that failure to use direct employment on the Games building project would result in the excessive use of cheap foreign labour, and lead to increased health and safety risks on site. However, some construction experts have claimed these demands could send the estimated £3bn wage bill rocketing by as much as 20%. Now Personnel Today's sister title Contract Journal reports that a formal signing on a memorandum of agreement is "pending". Bob Blackman, national secretary at Unite, told Contract Journal: "The memorandum of agreement provides a full commitment to the ethos of direct employment. It represents an agreement that the trade unions believe will be of benefit to all parties."

One driver told Commercial Motor magazine: "Its taking an awful lot more time out of our day and we aren't being paid any extra for it. If someone paid a plumber to install a washing machine, it would be £30 an hour." Another driver said: "We haven't had any skills training, we are not qualified. A spokesperson for DSGi, parent company of the stores, would not comment on the allegations, but said it is "happy to discuss any outstanding issues that drivers may have". |
