We published some days ago a post trying to cover some of the reactions caused by the casting of Ellen Page as Jane Eyre in a BBC Films/Ruby Films film project. Today, The Independent devotes an entire article to the question that acts almost as a summary of the arisen controversy. Nina Gold, acclaimed casting director, has a clear view on the subject: All the fuss about Ellen Page being cast as Jane Eyre for a BBC film is misplaced. I think she's got the part because she's a really good actress and the producers must think she's the best person for the part. Not to cast on the basis of her being the wrong nationality would be mad. The tomboyish young actress played a character who describes herself as "an oil lamp that had never been lit," saying after the concert, "now I'm finally burning bright with sister fire." Her boyfriend, played by Andy Samberg, asks her if she's gone gay and she responds by rolling around on the floor, legs splayed and asking, "Why cant I just hug a woman with my legs in friendship?" In an earlier post I had written about the new Canadian doc Up the Yangtze and the film?s potential for overcoming the nationalist/neoliberal debate in the Canadian culturesphere. Well that film was entirely shot in China about a Chinese family, and made mostly by Canucks. That makes it Canadian enough for the bureaucratic culture-meters north of Hollywood. Now take Juno, a film nominated for several Oscars (with one win) and winning accolades wherever it is screened. The film was shot in Canada, stars Canadian talent and was made by a Canadian director. With the upcoming Genie awards (Canada?s answer to the Oscars) the film was seen to be a sweeper. Think again. Etan Vlessing reports on Reuters today that because Juno was financed primarily by an LA-based company, it is not Canadian enough to make it into the Genies. Cillian Murphy and Ellen Page: Psycho Pair of Peacock Talk about a devilish combination: Cillian Murphy and Ellen Page, together, in a psychological thriller that pits the two against each other. Variety reports that the two have signed on to star in Peacock, wherein Murphy plays a man with a split personality - husband and wife alter egos - and Page, a young mother who "sparks a battle" between them. The film is named for the town in which the story takes place, Peacock, Nebraska. The residents believe Murphy's egos are, in fact, a married couple. How great is that? Of course, Page is all the rage nowadays, what with her Oscar nomination for Juno and having signed onto two well-reported movies in the past month - Whip It (directed Drew Barrymore) and Drag Me To Hell (directed by Sam Raimi). Ellen Page wowed the critics in Juno and now it seems the only way is up! Page has already signed on to star in Sam Raimi’s new horror, Drag Me To Hell, and Drew Barrymore’s directional debut Whip It, but she’s not stopping there as she’s now signed on to join Cillian Murphy in the psychological thriller, Peacock. Ellen Page to star in Sam Raimi's Drag Me to Hell Sam Raimi doesn't get his dream job of directing the Lord of the Rings Hobbit prequels… What is the Spider-Man director to do? Anything he wants - he's Sam f'n Raimi. And what Raimi wants is the hottest actress in Hollywood right now in his next film. Ellen Page has been cast in Raimi's Drag Me to Hell, which Raimi wrote with his brother Ivan. After Spider-Man 3, Raimi has something to prove, and is returning to the genre where he made his name - horror. The director’s long-time collaborator Robert Tapert describes the film as follows: “Sam calls it a ’spook-a-blast,’ a wild ride with all the chills and spills that ‘Evil Dead’ delivered, without relying on the excessive violence of that film.” It's a morality tale about the unwitting recipient of a supernatural curse.
