We published some days ago a post trying to cover some of the reactions caused by the casting of Ellen Page as Jane Eyre in a BBC Films/Ruby Films film project. Today, The Independent devotes an entire article to the question that acts almost as a summary of the arisen controversy. Nina Gold, acclaimed casting director, has a clear view on the subject: All the fuss about Ellen Page being cast as Jane Eyre for a BBC film is misplaced. I think she's got the part because she's a really good actress and the producers must think she's the best person for the part. Not to cast on the basis of her being the wrong nationality would be mad. In an earlier post I had written about the new Canadian doc Up the Yangtze and the film?s potential for overcoming the nationalist/neoliberal debate in the Canadian culturesphere. Well that film was entirely shot in China about a Chinese family, and made mostly by Canucks. That makes it Canadian enough for the bureaucratic culture-meters north of Hollywood. Now take Juno, a film nominated for several Oscars (with one win) and winning accolades wherever it is screened. The film was shot in Canada, stars Canadian talent and was made by a Canadian director. With the upcoming Genie awards (Canada?s answer to the Oscars) the film was seen to be a sweeper. Think again. Etan Vlessing reports on Reuters today that because Juno was financed primarily by an LA-based company, it is not Canadian enough to make it into the Genies. Ellen Page appears in the March 2008 edition of Interview Magazine wearing a tuxedo.I can very much imagine that Ellen fought on this shoot to keep away from a cutesy look. No doubt the stylist wanted to go cute and feminine, but looks like Ellen got her way. The only thing feminine is the red lipstick she is wearing.The two Gucci looks have more of a tomboyish vibe in Ellen's shoot in comparison to the two sexy feminine runway looks.I can't wait to see what she wears on Sunday at the Oscars.For her interview with Interview Ellen was interview by Drew Barrymore, who will is the director of Ellen's next movie Derby Girl.Here are extracts from their interview:Drew Barrymore: "What's your idea of a perfect day?"Ellen Page: "Lord.
