Catlivin? Climber
2008-03-13 13:24:00
I’ve always wanted a climby thing to keep my acrobatic cat amused and out of our hair, but as a lifelong renter the options aren’t so good. I can’t exactly be screwing avant-garde home-made climbers into the wall a la apartment living. And the thought of purchasing a standalone cat climber is a little ...
Lovin? Modern Cat
2008-01-03 01:36:00
I’m lovin’ this Moderncritter cat scratcher reviewed last week on Moderncat. And I’m also lovin’ Moderncat itself, which takes a designer-y look at the latest cat gadgets - and has free giveaways. Free! Giveaways! Scamper over and have a look.

My friend Jason just got back from a few weeks in China. He was there for a conference, and wandering the streets he saw lots and lots of signs like this one. Now, I know what dumpling, fried rice, and fried noodles are. But can anybody make any sense out of these other ones? Fragrant and ...
I heart Japan
2007-07-15 18:51:00
Only in Japan would someone come up with the idea of confining melons and cucumbers to certain shapes when they are young, so that when they are ripe, they are square, or pyramidal, or star-shaped. Oh goodness, just go have a look for yourself.

I credit our parents with the development of Maia and my math-y minds (she’s getting her PhD in math, I’m in physics). They refused to let us buy into the mysticism and stigma associated with math, introducing us to the basic geometry and algebra concepts at very young ages. I remember many dinnertime ...
Eat Local Triangle
2007-06-23 17:01:00
Maia and I both have the great luck of living in a place where good local food is easily available. California is a standout in produce production, and you can’t go 5 miles on a Saturday in San Diego county without stumbling upon a farmer’s market. Stalls there are lined with ’seasonal’ veggies ...
Eating My Curds and Whey
2007-06-20 16:24:00
Hello all. I’m Laurel, Maia’s sister, and I’ll be your guest blogger for the week. I recently read Barbara Kingsolver’s Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, a description of her family’s journey through a year of eating only (or mostly) produce and meat grown on their own property in Virginia. Kingsolver had more than your average knowledge ...
Toronto, part deux
2007-06-04 06:22:00
Toronto is an amazing city. It’s the 5th largest city in North America (after Mexico City, New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago), but it’s clean as a whistle and you have to work pretty hard to find somewhere you’d feel uncomfortable walking around in alone after dark. And there’s a lot to be seen just ...
KO TO
2007-05-27 02:55:00
I’m in Toronto for nine days, and oh man it is good to be in a real city, to be able to walk down the street, passing through narrow alleys between brick mansions and into streets where cafes and pubs spill out onto the sidewalk so that passersby brush shoulders between the menu board and ...
A minivacation
2007-05-16 09:18:00
This past weekend, Henning and I took a minivacation to Santa Barbara. We had to pick up Henning’s new passport at the German embassy in LA on the way, so we spent the day going to a few museums there. The Modern West Landscapes exhibition at LACMA is a bit boring, save the part from ...

Virginia Tech and Elsewhere
2007-04-17 16:47:00
For the moment, the murderous spree at Virginia Tech University has virtually eclipsed all other news. The headlines scream, as if echoing the screams of those victimized by this incomprehensible tragedy. As the details continue to emerge, many questions are being asked. How could this have happened? How could one person ...
Woolmer death would've halted World Cup elsewhere
2007-04-11 14:50:00
The Bob Woolmer murder Woolmer death would've halted World Cup elsewhere - Inzamam Would the world cup have stopped after Bob Woolmer's death, anywhere else in the world? Inzamam poses a question Inzamam-ul-Haq, former Pakistan captain, feels that the World Cup would have been halted anywhere else in the world after the suspected murder of Bob Woolmer, Pakistan's coach at the time, last month in Jamaica. In an interview with Geo Super, a local sports channel, Inzamam also suggested the death of Woolmer was due to a security lapse. "If this terrible tragedy had occurred in any other country; If such a security lapse had taken place anywhere else they would have stopped the World Cup," Inzamam said. Woolmer, 58, was found unconscious in his hotel room in Kingston on March 18, one day after Pakistan were knocked out of the World Cup at the hands of Ireland. The Pakistan coach was pronounced dead later in hospital and Jamaican police are investigating his death as...

042 Gnarls Barkley - St. Elsewhere (2006)
2006-10-25 00:12:03
