First NYC Emergency Room Visit
2008-04-23 01:15:00 A recent nonfatal, noncontagious but painful medical condition landed me in the emergency room on Monday morning. My boss cancelled all of her morning meetings and took me in a cab herself after I doubled-over in agony at my desk and then vomited in the bathroom. How great is she? My parents are sending her flowers.A CT scan revealed the cause of my discomfort over the past week and a half (resulting in four sick days last week and two in this one), and now that I have been assured that I am not dying, I'm concentrating on recovery. My first NYC ER experience was fairly comfortable at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital. I particularly enjoyed being run back and forth through the giant donut while the mysterious voice on an intercom commanded over and over, "Take a deep breath in and hold it ... You may breathe normally."I also have to thank BNR - our Brooklyn-based blogger buddy/registered nurse, from whom I often seek informal medical advice - for his comforting text messages throughou...
A Mom, A Memory and a Moment of WHOA!
2008-04-10 16:34:00 As a Mom... I got to know the Emergency room a lot better (or worse) than I ever had known it. James was ( a wonderful word here) asthmatic. He went from racing 70 miles an hour around the house to hunched shoulders and sitting in a corner in 32 seconds. Housing at Scott AFB was so close to the hospital, it was quicker to walk cutting through a neighbor's yard and right into the ER. They knew us. We knew the routine: a shot, the IV insertion, and then the albuterol in a breathing treatment. He would be admitted up to the 4th floor, nurses greeted him by name, tossled his blond hair and allowed him free range of the refrigerator full of Popsicles.Yesterday I was there again. Not at Scott, but at another ER. I was amazed that the breathing treatment still popped and smoked and was just the same. No longer does a nurse give the instructions for the treatment... but a respiratory therapist. I sat there and listened and then... WHOA... it was me who needed it. The mask went on me... the...

Friday Night, 3:30am at the Emergency Room
2008-03-11 11:30:00 I want to say first and foremost to anyone stumbling across this story - if you have a child that has swallowed a battery the first thing you need to do is call the National Poison Control Center and get that kid to the closest emergency room. What I have learned this weekend is that those ...

Health Care - Just Go To An Emergency Room
2008-03-04 03:51:00 "I mean, people have access to health care in America. After all, you just go to an emergency room." - George W. Bush, July 10, 2007, Cleveland, OhioThis sentence has been ringing in my ears since July. Fool that I am, I did not understand just how easy it all is. Gee, my MS is acting up -- any guesses as to what they'll do for me down at the emergency room? How about this rotator cuff problem? I've been trying to get an MRI for three months only to learn now that I could have just walked right in! Oh, then there's that little problem of individual health insurance coverage for a partially disabled person with a chronic illness. Guess they'll help me out with that, too!Oh, here comes that fantasy of mine again...The members of all three branches of the United States government are stripped of their health insurance plans and all sources of income. Then they are assigned a salary equal to Mr. and Mrs. Average American. They are stripped of any special privileges of status. They a...

Keep Waiting:Emergency Room for Seniors, Obama and Clinton, updates
2008-02-11 15:55:00 The theme of the blog today is how we keep waiting; and no, it’s not the John Mayer song of the same name. Today, as always, its about health care for seniors, older people, boomers, whoever. How does that fit with both emergency rooms and the presidential campaign?

I'm not using my inside voice anymore
2008-01-08 05:55:00 So. It's the typical Monday. It's 2pm (1400 for us medical folks) and the ER is jammed up to the rafters. We're holding 6 admits, two of which are ICU patients (funny how the ICU nurse only can have 2 patients but the ER nurse somehow has to manage ICU patients and their other patients also.) In the hall we have 4 gurney patients and 6 patients in chairs. The PA is seeing people in the lobby and starting their lab and xray orders. We have already admitted 18 patients (between 10 am and now) and have another 8 admits pending. There are two ambulance crews standing in the hall without a hope in hell of off-loading their patients anytime soon. I'm in charge of this mad house. I have two phones on my belt that are ringing non-stop and I am one step away from 'accidentally' dropping them in the toilet. I am trying to intake one of the ambulance patients and get report on a patient that is being transferred in on one of my phones. During all this I get a call from one of ...

Britney Spears Rushed to Emergency Room Last Night
2008-01-04 12:41:00 Britney Spears refused to turn over the kids last night to Kevin federlines's Bodyguard, and the police were called to help get them out of her house. Spears was taken to the hospital for an evaluation as she was found to be under the influence of an unknown substance. I think Spears just can't handle it any more because she is not gaining anyground in this custody case and she has no friends and even her lawyer is planning to leave her. She was taken to the hospital Last Night. Hope they keep her in the hospital and release her to a court ordered rehab so she can get the help she so needs. Kevin Federline, the two boys as well as Jamie Spears were all at the hospital.P.S Get Well Soon.

Asthmatic Attack - Home or the Emergency Room?
2007-12-29 13:21:00 Having a Treatment Plan The drop in peak flow to 50 percent of the patient’s best identifies a serious attack. The patient should repeat the maneuver to determine if it is reproducible. Each patient should have a plan of treatment that has been worked out with the physician. This will typically call for immediate ...

Mr. Crusty: Hopeless Case of the Week?
2007-09-26 05:32:00 First: I saw the best patient ever today. She was a young lady who needed a blood gas, and not only was she cheerful and cooperative, she was absolutely charming even with a needle stuck in her artery. I was totally impressed with her as a patient and left her room smiling and feeling satisfied, ...

Panda Bear MD has written an interesting piece about the way things are perceived and operated in the Emergency Room. Often, we ...
True Stories from the Emergency Room...
2007-09-06 05:47:00 A man in his mid-fifties did a Loraina Bobbit on himself in a drunken rage and ended up in the ER. The urologist thought that he could reattach the mans genitalia if it could be recovered and if it was in good condition. The police were dispatched to the man's house and the search was on. During the search one of the officers heard a choking sound coming from the man's poodle that was sitting in the corner. After a brief fight the officer was able to retrieve the man's jewels from the dog's mouth. After inspection of the parts by the urologist it was decided that the man would need to be taught to pee while sitting (if you know what I mean). The officer was given a commendation from his precinct for medical assistance.A doctor who spoke limited Spanish was rushed to a car in the ER parking lot to find a Spanish woman in the process of giving birth. Wanting to tell the woman to push he started yelling "Puta! Puta! Puta!" At this the grandmother started to cry and the baby's fath...

The sad tale of Incest McDrunkypants
2007-08-13 03:20:00 A number of months ago I promised to tell you all the tale of Incest McDrunkypants. Of course, I completely forgot to do so until just now. This is a true story that happened in the ER of Our Lady of Immaculate Grace several months ago, long before I had even begun this blog. The ...
Monkey Boy's Very First, Totally Useless Emergency Room Visit
2007-08-05 01:09:00 It was only a matter of time. This type of behavior can only go on for so long before someone finally has to say "I think he needs stitches".Monkey Boy's time came yesterday, during a gravity defying attempt to leap over Mr. Honeybell from the couch to the floor head first. You guessed it, he does NOT in fact, have the ability to fly. It is a relief to have THAT nagging question all cleared up.Also, Monkey Boy does not like Emergency Room staff. Having a small, but deep and profusely bleeding wound cleaned out is NOT his idea of a good time. Nor is being wrapped like a mummy while ER staff glue his face something he is remotely interested in doing again ( we choose glue as opposed to stitches to minimize scarring, and no one wanted to hold him down that long anyway).Everyone within a three mile radius of the hospital is now acutely aware of his displeasure at the entire "holding down and wound gluing" situation. One resident in the vicinity contacted me personally and asked ...

2007-08-03 16:32:00 It was a couple of days before Thanksgiving and I was working a shift at Big City Hospital, up in the Northeast. This was during my travel days, before I made the mistake of signing up at Our Lady to escape the chaos of the big city and also because they had a signing bonus ...
Coming to an ER near you: Part Three
2007-07-12 21:50:00 Sorry to keep posting these “coming to an ER near you” posts, but I can’t seem to stop. I was reading “Found Magazine” when I came across this beauty: If you can’t make that out, it says “Dear pizza guys — I need to find out you name (& I hope at least the addres is right). ...
EMS and CPAP
2007-06-29 21:46:00 As part of my ongoing effort to be responsive to reader input in the form of comments and search-engine hits, I’m going to blather a bit about EMS and CPAP. Note to Emergency Room Personnel
2007-06-16 15:09:00 When a patient informs you that, despite the local anesthesia, she can feel the sharp needle jabbing as you stitch her knee, do not say, “No, you can’t!” Because she can. And while the needle was not enjoyable, the disbelief as to the sensation of sharp pain was downright infuriating. /end rant P.S. I’m fine. Just slightly irritated and totally embarrassed. Aren’t my kids the ones who are supposed to occasionally require visits to the ER because of their risky, outdoor, childlike activities? I was simply attempting to transport myself by foot from my house to my car. Which involves a walk of approximately 20 feet. This sort of undertaking should not result in bloodshed, four stitches, and a tetanus shot. P.P.S. I am proud of the fact that in spite of falling in an extremely sudden and ungraceful manner, I managed to land with my coffee cup upright. Didn’t spill a drop. Priorities! I’m thinking of walking down the driveway to check the mailb...
What a waste
2007-06-14 19:03:00 It was 5 AM in the ER at Our Lady of Immaculate Grace. I was just documenting an early-morning nebulizer on a young lad when the radio crackled to life. “Backwoods EMS to Our Lady.” The charge nurse yawned and wheeled her chair back to the radio. At 5 AM, it’s usually either a nursing ...
Woman Dies in Martin Luther King Hospital Emergency Room While Staff Watch
2007-06-14 05:36:00 This is an abomination!!!!!!!!!!!!! I couldn't compute what I was hearing when I heard and saw this story unfolding on the television screen a little while ago. How DARE they abuse the name of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the manner that they did??!!! he stood for exactly the opposite in nature than these people did that day!!!!!!! How DARE they claim themselves to be healers while doing nothing while this woman dies on the floor of their ER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is like a horror film that we would see made by Bin Laden's follwers!!!!!!!!!! Everybody involved in this unbelievable atrocity from the staff, to the 911 operator to the chief medical officer (at least he was replaced) should be asking themselves the question, "Why am I working in the medical field?" because you guys, they sure chose the wrong field if they could just stand there with their apathy!!!!!! Although what the family of Edith Rodriquez lost, will not be regained with a suit by them, I hope they will ...
