NZ Politics: Crunch Time For Emissions Trading
2008-08-22 01:15:00 It is crunch time for the New Zealand government’s proposed emissions trading scheme (ETS), with negotiations reportedly in their final stages and the Green Party publicly asking its supporters whether it should support the bill. The ETS forms the centrepiece of the government’s climate change policy. Under the scheme, the government would issue permits allowing a ...

G8 agrees to halve emissions by 2050...
2008-07-09 07:46:00 The most powerful nations(economically and industrially) of the world, the G8, comprising of the United States, Britain, Canada, France, Russia, Germany, Italy and Japan have pledged to halve greenhouse emissions by 2050. While this pledge has been hailed by the members of G8, developing nations are not satisfied. Even some environmentalists believe that mid-term goals should be set in order to keep a check on this titanic problem of Climate change. Seems like we're heading for a deadlock, with Bush urging the developing nations like China and India to take initial steps towards reducing carbon emissions while the developing nations expect things to take shape the other way around. How will these developments affect the environment? Only time would tell... image source:- un.org

Toyota launches updated version of zero-emissions FCHV fuel-cell vehicle
2008-06-07 00:46:00 Toyota launches updated version of zero-emissions FCHV fuel-cell vehicle Toyota announced on Friday that it has developed a new hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle that is far more advanced than the automaker's previous-generation fuel-cell vehicle. The new system now allows the vehicle — dubbed the FCHV-adv — to travel 516 miles on a single tank of hydrogen and it can operate in conditions as cold as -22 degrees F. Through changes to the vehicle's fuel-cell unit, braking system and a few other tweaks, Toyota engineers were able to improve the fuel-cell's fuel efficiency by 25 percent, according to Automotive News. Those changes combined with a bigger fuel tank and the doubling of storage pressure netted a new range of 516 miles — up from the previous FCHV's (pictured) range of 205 miles. Top speed is a respectable 97 mph. In comparison, Honda's FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel-cell sedan has a range of 385 miles and can operate in conditions from -22...

Indonesia plans drastic emissions cuts by 2025
2008-05-24 01:20:00 Indonesia outlined a plan to slash greenhouse gas emissions by 17 per cent by 2025 yesterday, a potentially bold move which could shame wealthier nations into announcing tougher targets of their own. The country, with a population of 235 million people, has one of the largest carbon footprints outside of the developed world. Environment ministers from the Group of Eight leading industrialised countries, as well as from emerging economies such as China and India, begin talks in Kobe, Japan, today to pave the way for a G8 summit in Hokkaido in July. Speaking ahead of today's meeting, the Indonesian Environment Minister, Rachmat Witoelar, said. "I'd like to voice my concerns that if the issue is not carefully managed, it will threaten the existence of humanity in Asia in particular, and the world in general. However, it is still unclear how Indonesia would deliver such radical cuts. Mr Witoelar claimed that the goal could be achieved with reductions in forest burni...

Trucking group proposes plan to cut fuel consumption and emissions
2008-05-12 21:09:00 There's a lot of discussion of late blaming the increased use of food crops for biofuel production for the rapid increase in food prices around the world. Unfortunately that's only a small part of the equation. The reality is that a bigger part of problem is the increase in fuel prices. After all, a lot oil has to be used to cultivate, fertilize, harvest and deliver food crops. With oil topping $120/barrel this week, the trucking industry is working on ways to reduce costs for operators. The American Trucking Association has come up with a six point plan that could cut fuel consumption by 86 billion gallons and CO2 emissions by 900 million tons over the next decade. Most of the points are pretty obvious such as setting truck speed governors to 68mph to reduce speeds, reduce idling fuel economy standards for trucks and highway infrastructure improvements to reduce congestion. One particular suggestion that could prove controversial is labeled as using more productive truck combinat...

New emissions rules may force next gen Saab 9-3 to grow smaller
2008-05-09 21:34:00 Upcoming fuel economy regulations in the U.S. and carbon dioxide emissions limits in Europe appear set to take a bite out of the next generation Saab 9-3. The current 9-3 is derived from GM's Epsilon platform and the new 9-3 was due to come off the Epsilon II that underpins the new Opel Insignia, but a change may be in the works. GM has reportedly canceled the Epsilon II-based 9-3 in favor of a model built off the Global Compact Car platform that will be the basis of the next Astra/Cobalt and, of course, the Volt. If the new plan, proceeds that would give Saab two cars off the new chassis with the smaller 9-1 being the other. New structural construction technology in the new architecture will apparently help maximize interior space in the smaller car.[Source: Autocar]

London?s Congestion Charge will increase CO2 emissions?
2008-04-13 03:56:00 We don't want to take sides on London's Congestion Charge, but we are keenly interested in what the charge will mean for the environment and motorists. Ken Livingstone claims that the charge is intended to reduce congestion and CO2 emissions while Porsche claims that the charges are unnecessarily high and unfair. New evidence that Porsche has located, though, indicates that CO2 emissions will actually increase if the charges go into effect as planned. In fact, Porsche claims that the mayors office was aware of this report and chose not to release it. The report, prepared for Transport for London by King's College London's Environmental Research Group, predicted that the charges would create a "very high disbenefit" not only for CO2 but also for NOx, NO2 and particulate matter. The reason cited for the increased emissions is that drivers will choose to drive around London instead of driving straight through, which would be a much shorter trip. London's emissions may drop, but th...

Additionally, the Swift DDiS will be free of any Congestion Charges in London due to its emissions of less than 120g/km of C02. The new Swift will probably be a decent drive, with 125 lb ft (170 Nm) at just 2000 rpm being plenty to get the little car moving. What's more, the turbo diesel mill will return 61.4 mpg in the Combined cycle. Priced at £10,515 in the U.K., the new DDiS model lies in the middle of the Swift range and marks a pretty decent value for the money. The Weekly Carboholic: Project Vulcan maps US CO2 emissions in detail
2008-04-09 15:30:00 In our first Carboholic, I pointed people at a great new tool to monitor global carbon emissions, the Carma (Carbon Monitoring for Action) website. Today I’d like to point people to a fantastic new scientific tool for monitoring the carbon emissions of the continental United States: Project Vulcan. But first, a YouTube video on the project. Project Vulcan is a joint project of Purdue University, Colorado State University, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and it was funded jointly by NASA and the Department of Energy. The goal was to create a map of carbon dioxide emissions that was highly detailed both in time and in space. Using other types of pollution that are monitored by the EPA, DoE, et al as proxies for CO2, Vulcan was able to indirectly monitor the concentrations of CO2 in the atmosphere on a 10km uniform grid spaced across the entire United States, and on an hourly basis. Vulcan modeled utilities, industrial sources, and transportation across the c...
18 states file to force EPA to regulate greenhouse gas emissions
2008-04-07 05:06:00 Seventeen states are backing Massachusetts in a petition to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia that would force the EPA to regulate greenhouse gas emissions. Filed one year after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the EPA needed to decide on regulating vehicle emissions - a year in which the EPA failed to take any action - the petition asks that the court demand the EPA release a decision in the next 60 days. When Massachusetts took the EPA to court in 2006 to decide the issue, the senior attorney for the Sierra Club, David Bookbinder, told Newsweek that the Supreme Court would have to issue a clear ruling. "There's really no wiggle room. Either EPA has this authority or not. It's a very plain language case," he said at the time. A year and a half later, here we are. The states are: Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington and the District o...

Mitsubishi U.K. lowers emissions of their L200
2008-04-03 09:42:00 Click in the image to enlargeLondon's Congestion Charge has drawn ire from some manufacturers, but others are doing something to help alleviate the "financial burden" the charges place on their customers. According to Jim Tyrrell, Mitsubishi's Managing Director, "The vast majority of our customers run a 4x4 for a specific purpose – not simply as a fashion item. We have worked hard to reduce the emissions levels wherever we can to help minimize any negative financial impact on the thousands of businesses that have chosen to use our pick-ups."In line with this statement, new Mitsubishi L200s equipped with a manual transmission and not fitted with the Rallitronic power upgrade will now come with a 225 g/km CO2 emissions rating, placing them in a lower Congestion Charge band. Before the modifications to the L200, drivers would be forced to pay £25 per day for trips into London; now the charge will be £8 per day.The TfL Congestion Charge on dual purpose double cab pick-...
Flameless combustion could generate power with very low emissions
2008-04-03 09:27:00 digg_url = 'http://digg.com/environment/Fl-ameless_Combustion_Could_Genera-te_Power'; Until more eco-friendly alternatives become available, most of us are stuck burning fossil-fuels for our power, whether we're driving or just powering the lights in our homes. With that in mind, researchers from the Middle East are working on new ways to reduce the emissions from methane-gas burning turbines for power generation. Using very high heat and very low oxygen levels, Mohamed Sassi of The Petroleum Institute in Abu Dabi, along with Mohamed Hamdi and Hamaid Bentîcha from the National School of Engineers of Monastir in Tunisia, have modeled what is known as flameless combustion, or flameless oxidation (FLOX). This new process could drastically reduce the harmful NOX emissions associated with gas-burning turbines while also being more efficient. We have hopes that the widespread generation of power could be taken care of with alternatives such as wind, solar and wave power, but since ...
EPA chief finds a way to further delay taking action on emissions
2008-04-03 09:20:00 As TalkingPointsMemo put it, "no Bush Administration official, current or former, can hold a candle to EPA chief Stephen Johnson when it comes to chutzpah." Why would TPM say something like this? Well, do you remember the Supreme Court's decision that the EPA would, indeed, need to regulate vehicle greenhouse-gas emissions? It happened exactly one year ago today. Since that time, the EPA has found ways to slow down the process and Johnson has now come up with an unhelpful scheme to delay any action. Seriously delay.WardsAuto reports that by opening up the decision to public comments, Johnson "could delay regulation until as late as 2009." Two years to take action on cleaner air? That's a Bush Administration official for ya. U.S. Rep. John Dingell (D-MI), who's no fan of regulating automakers, said, "I recognize that the current Clean Air Act may not be the best mechanism for regulating greenhouse gases. Ice Cap Alarmists Create Stories To Fit Carbon Emissions Theory
2008-03-31 05:32:00 A spate of alarmist articles in the media over the past few days have attempted to cause a frothing wave of panic concerning an accelerated melting of Arctic and Antarctic ice caps. However, the basic facts of the matter reveal that the science to prove this theory simply does not stack up. The cause of the great thawing? Carbon emissions of cause. The solution? Carbon taxes. UN climate chief warns of 'accelerated melting' of ice caps was the AFP headline yesterday that announced the chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) call for international tariffs on carbon emissions: "Now there's enough evidence to show that there is accelerated melting of some of these large bodies of ice; west Antarctic ice-sheet, the Greenland ice-sheet," Rajendra Pachauri told reporters. His comments came after satellite images by the University of Colorado's National Snow and Ice Data Center showed Antarctica's massive Wilkins Ice Shelf has begun disintegrating under the e...

BMW?s hydrogen V12 engine: only a fraction of SULEV emissions levels
2008-03-28 23:02:00 There are many hurdles standing in the way of hydrogen becoming widespread as an energy carrier for our vehicles, either by the direct burning of it in internal combustion engines or in fuel cells. Very few hydrogen refueling centers exist today, and the gas is difficult to capture, transport and store. One thing is certain regarding hydrogen, though: it can offer extremely low emissions, as it does in BMW's hydrogen-burning V12 engine.BMW's Hydrogen 7 had to be tested at Argonne National Laboratory's Center for Transportation Research because the emissions are so minute that most test-beds would not be able to detect them at all. "The BMW Hydrogen 7's emissions were only a fraction of SULEV level, making it one of the lowest emitting combustion engine vehicles that have been manufactured," said Thomas Wallner, a mechanical engineer at Argonne. In fact, Wallner adds, "the car's engine actively cleans the air. Argonne's testing shows that the Hydrogen 7's 12-cylinder engine ac...
California lawmaker wants to end emissions exemption for some old cars
2008-03-26 20:47:00 Since the 1970s California has required car owners to get their emissions tested periodically before they can renew their registrations. However, for obvious reasons, cars built before 1976 were exempted from the rules since they could not reasonably expected to meet newer standards. Now, though, California state Senator Dean Florez wants to repeal that exemption at least in the San Joaquin Valley area. Given that the number of pre-1976 cars on the road is shrinking every year, and many of those that remain are restored classics and better maintained than most cars, this seems like pointless posturing on the part of Florez. Perhaps a more effective approach would be to offer some sort of incentive to owners of old beaters to get them off the road and replace them with modern vehicles. This would help to get the real offenders out the population. I mean, the true classics are typically driven relatively few miles each year and aren't really part of the problem. Thanks to Kevin for t...
Automakers and ethanol producers fight Minnesota emissions rules
2008-03-26 08:11:00 Legislators in Minnesota have introduced bills in the State House and Senate that would have the state adopt California's emissions standards. These California rules, which also include limits on carbon dioxide emissions, have been adopted by at least a dozen other states. The limits on greenhouse gas emissions are currently the subject of a lawsuit by California and other states against the EPA, which denied California's waiver request for the regulations. The odd thing in Minnesota is that corn growers and ethanol producers have jumped into the fray against the proposals. There doesn't actually appear to be anything in the proposed legislation that would specifically harm the E85 market. However, the ethanol lobby is teaming up with the automakers who are obviously opposed to the California rules. It appears that the only way that this actually affects Team Ethanol is if the CO2 limits hurt sales of larger cars and full-size trucks which comprise the bulk of currently available...

2008-03-20 07:06:00 TOKYO - Japanese households and businesses could end up paying more than $500 billion to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 11 percent over the next decade, the trade and industry ministry said Wednesday. The report mapped out the changes that consumers and industry would have to make in order to cut emissions of carbon dioxide and other gases blamed for global warming below 2005 levels by 2020. The forecast, by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, comes as Japan is struggling to meet obligations under the kyoto global warming pact to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 6 percent under 1990 levels by 2012.source:- Yahoo Newsfull article
