2009-07-20 03:06:00 Liverpool-based Littlewoods is the new sponsor of ITV1 soap Emmerdale.The deal, which was brokered by Carat Sponsorship, runs from 31st August for 2 years.The home-shopping company, owned by Shop Direct will have multimedia sponsorship rights for the programme and includes ITV1, ITV2 and ITV3, online, interactive, mobile interactive bumpers and licensing.The final element means it will be able to use cast members for promotional purposes across the Littlewoods catalogue and website.?We are very happy to have signed this major deal, which continues our association with our heartland audience?s passion for Soaps. It?s scale demonstrates our commitment to reinforcing Littlewoods positioning as a much loved online shopping brand for the family,? said David Inglis, trading director at Shop Direct.Emmerdale?s previous sponsor Reckitt Benckiser, which has brands including Air Wick and Clearasil, decided not to renew its contract and instead concentrate on online.

The actor, who is accused of raping a 16-year-old British holidaymaker on the Caribbean island a fortnight ago, looked stern as he arrived for the summit at Yorkshire TV’s studios in Leeds. He spent 90 minutes in the meeting with the soap’s producers and lawyers. And it was revealed last night that he had asked for a "leave of absence" from the show so he can concentrate on clearing his name. In a statement, the Royal Barbados Police Force said Freeman was accused by a British woman of sexually assaulting her while the 26-year-old actor was on holiday at the Almond Beach Village resort on the tropical island’s northern coast. Police did not release the woman’s identity or age or any other details, including when the alleged attack occurred and when Freeman was arrested. Freeman, who plays Scott Windsor in the British soap "Emmerdale," was granted US$10,000 (C7,550) bail and was due to appear in court Tuesday, the statement said.
