Ending an e-mail
2008-07-09 05:09:00 I had to send an e-mail last week, and I stewed for the longest time about how to close it. It was a personal e-mail that needed more than a "See ya" or a, "Thanks" and a little less than "Love" but, not having a closing wasn't right either as I needed to convey the right balance of intimacy and casualness. Took me forever to decide. What do you use to close e-mails? I think "Best" or "Best Regards" is pompous, "Love" gives the wrong idea in certain situations, "Yours truly" sounds like a romance novel. "Yours 'til Niagra Falls?" "Smell Ya Later" works, but you know, not always. Am I the only person who over-thinks this stuff?

Teachers Unions Succeed in Ending Scholarships
2008-06-22 07:28:00 -By Warner Todd Huston One would assume that everyone wants to see that our kids get the best education possible. I mean, who could possibly be against kids getting the best opportunities? Well, apparently the one entity that you’d expect to really care about kids is the one standing in the way of their education: teachers. ...

Ending the Hardware/Software Rat Race
2008-06-08 19:06:00 We're saved! Or rather, Windows XP is -- at least for the time being. Microsoft announced this week that it is extending the cut-off date for sales of the older edition of Windows until 2010, specifically to serve the needs of customers who are planning to buy one of the new wave of low-cost laptops due to arrive this summer. It's not hard to see why. The mini-laptop that started it all, the Asus Eee PC, shipped with Linux pre-installed, and many of the new machines are likely to take the same road. In fact, some PC makers are reportedly so enamored with Linux that the news of an XP option might fall on deaf ears. This is a fascinating development, and with any luck it could be the start of a promising new trend.

Pensacola Real Estate Market Weekly Update For Week Ending May 17, 2008
2008-06-02 03:50:00 Weekly Update For Residential Listings In Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties  Here is another weekly Pensacola real estate market report. This one covers the week of May 11-17. The Pensacola real estate market is not looking any brighter based on these numbers. We see the number of active listings creeping up. As of May 30th, it was up to 6546. Everything else looks pretty standard for this buyer’s market. I keep wondering when buyers are going to recognize the incredible deals that are available out there right now. It will probably be once the market starts moving up again, and then you will hear everyone lamenting that they didn’t buy when the market was at its lowest.  - The table shows the weekly market data for Pensacola residential property. - These numbers include only residential homes and condominiums in Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties that are listed in the Pensacola MLS. - They do not include vacant land or lots, mobile homes or manufactured homes ...
Season-Ending Surgery For Prior
2008-06-01 19:07:00 MLB.com's Corey Brock reports that San Diego Padres pitcher Mark Prior will have season-ending surgery to repair a torn muscle in his shoulder. The Padres signed the injury-plagued starter to a $1MM contract this offseason. While the news of Prior having to miss a season due to surgery doesn't come as much of a surprise, a healthy rebound would have been a bright spot in what has otherwise been a tough season for the Padres. The team saw Jake Peavy, Chris Young, and Josh Bard all hit the DL in May. It's unfortunate, but it seems like this will make teams even more hesitant to look at Prior this offseason. The right-hander undoubtedly has great talent, but has pitched just 43.2 innings since the beginning of the 2006 season.

Happy ending, after all!
2008-06-01 13:20:00 Wow, what a great ride it has been! It really was for me one of those life shaping experiences. I met so many people, I learned so many things, I grew as I person, as a result of exposing myself to all this intercultural exchange, I became to know and understand myself better, to accept the good things and the bad things about life. I mean, you'd better, you only got one. On my last night, I just got out with Sabrina, the way we always used to. We started in La Fianna, which is that place with fabulous nachos I keep yapping about. All the bar boys, Pablo, Alfredo, Enrico, told me they were sorry I leave, they hope to see me again soon, and you know, seemed genuinely caring, and not just because the three of them dig Sabrina but cos they are good people. They invited us to a glass of champaign and later on for a Jaggermaister shot, which is my favourite shot drink. They knew :-) Some french guys sent us some drinks. Oh well, we said "merci" and moved on. Some american guy, who claim...

The Never-Ending Presidential Campaign: What?s it cost us?
2008-05-29 20:54:00 You’ve probably noticed a relatively new phenomenon in American politics: The Never-Ending Presidential Campaign. (Might make a good animated flick, eh?) And you’ve likely thought Gee, this has been going on for-evuh. Well, it has: The 2008 presidential election campaign began as the mid-term elections ended in 2006. By February of the next year, look at all the Democrats who had tossed in the proverbial hat ? Sen. Joe Biden, Sen. Hillary Clinton, Sen. Chris Dodd, former Sen. John Edwards, Rep. Dennis Kucinich, Sen. Barack Obama, Gov. Bill Richardson, Gov. Tom Vilsack and former Sen. Mike Gravel. All but two were sitting governors or members of Congress. And the Republicans: Sen. John McCain, Sen. Sam Brownback, former Gov. Jim Gilmore, former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former Gov. Mike Huckabee, Rep. Duncan Hunter, three-time Senate race loser Alan Keyes, Rep. Ron Paul, former Gov. Mitt Romney, Rep. Tom Tancredo, and the Thompson twins, former Sen. Fred and former Gov. Tommy....

Pretty season ending by Southampton - we are 13th!
2008-05-25 20:46:00 After the change of tactical approach the results of my team highly improved. And the last 6 matches in Premier League were not an exclusion. Among them I would single out the last three matches. The game with Arsenal was kind of loss on a class. All four goals were scored by Robin Van Persie. And I felt how much their players are better personally than Southampton ones. What's interesting the match with Liverpool was very different one. That's because Liverpool is not so strong in my game in the current season. I mean the quality of players and also organization of their playing team style taking into comparison Gunners. Therefore we managed to win the game! And the last match with Man City was some kind of small festival. The victory in this game provided the 13th position for my Southampton! You see from Premier League standing that Arsenal has wonderful result of 96 points. And they are really cool team now still having leaders of attack: Fabregas, Adebayor, Va...

2008-05-17 16:33:00 Below is the chart for this week. Since it shows up small, you can just click on the image, and it will be large enough to view. The rows in white represent stocks that were sold during the week. The "Day Gain/Loss" columns represent what happened Friday. Not much of a week for me. I did not lose much, however, yesterday really blew what could have been a good week (down over a $1,000). The YTD loss is now at -85.8%.Obviously, my week was determined by ACC, since that is the only stock I have owned during this time. As I mentioned yesterday, I plan to hold it a little longer to see if it comes back like AFT did, unless it breaks below .09. I am not sure how long my patience will last though.Look for some new trades by the end of the month when I put some more funds in my account. Working with such a small amount has proved very difficult. I think the market is looking much better right now, so I think I have a good shot at duplicating my old success now that conditions are more ...

The era keeps ending
2008-05-06 22:22:00 Busy. Blah, blah, blah-biddy blah. Am boring even myself with the litany of things that could be the answer to, "What have I been doing?" Those of you without kids would be pondering how you'd get these few minutes of your life back if I wrote about it. Those of you with young kids would be thinking, "Wow, I'm glad I'm not that old", and, "I just can't relate", with a side of, "My kids won't ever have that much to do because I don't believe in organized activities." To the above: Think what you will, but, insane scheduling happens anyway as they get older, and I wouldn't trade it for the world. Those of you with grown kids would be all, "Buck up, it's only grade school", or, "HA! Better you than me." With that, we are still buried in end of the year school activities and sports interspersed with the handing out of $20 bills here and there for "thank you gifts" for teachers, coaches, janitors, crossing guards, baristas, dog-walkers, cashiers, ice-cream scoopers, the l...

THANK THE BEATLES FOR ENDING THE DRAFT
2008-05-05 03:55:00 The Beatles The world has the end of mandatory national service in Britain thanks to the Beatles, according to icon Ringo Starr. The drummer insists the U.K.?s pop and rock explosion in the 1960s all happened because teenagers no longer had to join the Army. Starr explains, "We were the first generation that didn?t go into the army. I missed the call up by, like, 10 months, and so we were allowed, as these teenagers, not to be regimented and turn into these musicians." And the rocker admits he was a hopeless drummer when he first started out.In an interview with fellow rocker Dave Stewart on television show On The Record, Starr recalled, "The first band I was in you were in if you had an instrument; it wasn?t a requirement to be able to play? and I couldn?t play."I?d got this kit of drums, I had no sense of time. I was just hitting these things and going faster and faster? That?s how I started." |
