Injuries: A-Rod is slated to return to the Yanks on Tuesday. The Astros placed Geoff Geary on the DL with a strained right groin, calling up P Fernando Nieve [MiLB Value -$19.42] to take his spot. Don't take it out on the TV, Izzy.  Jason Isringhausen hit the DL after hitting the TV.  They called up Chris Perez [MiLB Value $13.86] from AAA to take his spot.  The 22 year old Perez makes for an interesting add; he should at least be a good source of Ks [11.69 K/9 in 100.1 MiLB IP].  He should also be in line for a few save opportunities, as Ryan Franklin hasn't exactly been shut down. Transactions: The Brewers sent RP Mitch Stetter to AAA Nashville, calling up Zach Jackson [MiLB value -$39.38].  Avoid Jackson like the plague in all formats. The Indians recalled Jeremy Sowers [MiLB Value $8.46] from AAA Buffalo, DFA'ing Jason Tyner to make room.  Sowers started Friday's game against Cincy, going 5 innings while giving up 3 ER and striking out 2.  ...
Odds And Ends: Cards' Bullpen, Fish Extensions, Aubrey Promoted
2008-05-17 18:44:00
St. Louis closer Jason Isringhausen is on the DL. But the Cards aren't going shopping for a replacement. At least, not yet. "Not at this time," Mozeliak said when asked if the club might be tempted to check out the market for relievers. "We're very fortunate that we have a lot of depth in relief, not only here but at Triple-A [Memphis]. A lot of this can be addressed internally." After today's press conference announcing Hanley Ramirez's six-year deal, Marlins officials said the baseball personnel staff has not recommended any other players receive multi-year contract offers. Dan Uggla, Mike Jacobs, Josh Willingham and Scott Olsen will all be arbitration-eligible at season's end. Cleveland's Jeremy Sowers, who turned 25 on Saturday, was sent back to Buffalo, where he is 2-2 with a 2.21 ERA in seven starts. Sowers made his second spot start of the season on Friday, giving up three runs and five hits over five innings. His ERA ranks fifth in the International League. Mike Aubrey...
Odds And Ends: Bellhorn, Astros, Scheppers
2008-05-17 12:38:00
Like most Saturdays at this time of year, it's a bit slow. So here are a few links to pass the time. The Dodgers have signed veteran IF Mark Bellhorn to a minor league deal. Tony Jackson from Inside the Dodgers says this happened a few weeks ago, but was well under the radar. After some extended spring training, Bellhorn has reported to AA, where he will simply fill a roster spot. He is not expected to help the major league team this year. Richard Justice says he wouldn't change a thing about the surprisingly-good Houston Astros. Fresno State ace and potential top-10 pick Tanner Scheppers has gone down with a stress fracture somewhere in his shoulder. Jonathan Mayo suspects he could fall to a big market team in the latter portion of the first round, a la Andrew Brackman last year. Joe Pawlikowski writes for River Ave. Blues, a Yankees blog, and can be reached here.

Odds and Ends: Hanley, Salcedo, Torrealba
2008-05-16 12:16:00
Time to round 'em up... Rob Neyer guesses B.J. Upton is the next to get a long-term deal from the Rays.  Back on April 24th, Jayson Stark wrote that the Upton family "has its own ideas about the market value of both brothers." Expect a Hanley Ramirez press conference today, or this weekend at the latest. Tribe Report walks us through the Edward Salcedo confusion. Yorvit Torrealba's agent has filed a grievance against the Mets over their nearly-signed three-year deal. Jon Heyman says nothing's imminent with Ken Griffey Jr. The Indians DFA'd Jason Tyner. A.J. Pierzynski attempts to dispel all those negative stories about his time with the Giants.
Odds & Ends
2008-05-16 09:08:00
Injuries: David Riske will hit the DL with a hyperextended right elbow.  The Brew Crew called up Mike DiFelice from AAA.  DiFfelice has struck out 28 in 23 IP this year at AAA. The Nats placed 1B Nick Johnson on the DL with a torn tendon sheath in his right wrist.  That sounds painful.  He'll miss 4-6 weeks.  Dmitri "Da Meathook" Young will be activated before Friday's game to take over Johnson's roster spot and lineup spot. The Giants placed RP Merkin Valdez on the DL with a strained elbow.  The Giants seemed confident it wasn't anything too serious.  They called up Alex Hinshaw [MiLB Value $22.20] from AAA.  Hinshaw should be a decent NL Only add, as the 25 year old has a career 10.99 K/9, and has seemed to found his control since '07. The Rox placed RP Ryan Speier on the DL with a right shoulder contusion.  The move was made retroactive to May 12.  They called up P Josh Newman [MiLB Value $2.01] to take his spot. Misc.: The G...
Odds And Ends: Rusch, Griffey, Myers, Brewers
2008-05-15 18:31:00
A few more notes for your ogling... This morning we told you that Glendon Rusch declined his assignment to AAA and chose to become a free agent. Troy E. Renck says that the Rockies are already expressing interest in the lefty. Brewers owner Mark Attanasio has given Doug Melvin permission to trade for a starting pitcher noting that there is enough flexibility in the payroll to take on another contract. However, Attanasio also indicated that it was too early to explore those possibilities. The Delaware News Journal takes a look at this past offseason's crop of free agent starting pitchers and how they are performing so far in '08. They wonder if any of those arms would have been a better option for the Phillies rotation than moving Brett Myers back from the bullpen. Doug Harris says that the smart move for the Reds is trading Ken Griffey Jr, noting that if they are waiting for him to hit his 600th home run, they could be in for a long wait. Odds And Ends: Rusch, Dohmann, Meek
2008-05-15 13:08:00
A few minor notes and transactions... Glendon Rusch, who was designated for assignment by the Padres, has declined his assignment to AAA and is now a free agent. Rusch had a 6.41 ERA in 12 appearances for the Pads, with 12 strikeouts and 11 walks in 19.2 innings. Scott Dohmann was designated for assignment by the Rays to make room for Al Reyes who was coming off the DL. Dohmann, a right-handed relief pitcher, had a 6.14 ERA in 12 appearances for the Rays. The Pirates and Rays finalized a "trade" to keep Evan Meek in the Pirates organization. Meek, a rule 5 draftee this past off-season, was recently removed from the Pirates active roster. The Buccos gave the Rays an undisclosed amount of cash to avoid having to send Meek back to the Rays' organization. Cork Gaines writes for Rays Index and canbe reached here.
State of the Roster II: Bills Tight Ends/Fullbacks
2008-05-15 13:00:00
Can Fine, other vet additions make a difference? (Photo Source) Prior to the 2008 NFL Draft - in fact, prior to the free agent signing period of this past March - we took a look at the Buffalo Bills' roster position by position, breaking down then-current personnel, finding holes, and building our community needs list. Now that free agency and the Draft have been completed, and the Bills have infused their roster with new talent, it's time to repeat our process.  Where has Buffalo gotten better?  Where have they gotten worse?  How will additions impact which Bills veterans remain on the roster?  These are questions that we'll attempt to answer over the next week or so. We continue those discussions today with an examination of Buffalo's stable of tight ends and fullbacks.  To view our previous discussions on Buffalo's TE situation (pre-off-season), bang it here. Robert Royal: Once considered the most mediocre starter on Buffalo's offense, Royal... well...

2008-05-15 10:15:00
Injuries: The Red Sox placed Clay Buchholz on the DL with a broken nail.  They called up OF Jonathan Van Every [MiLB Value $14.88] from AAA Pawtucket to take his spot.  Van Every was in the Cleveland system until last year, and profiles as a low-impact Quad-A type player. The Pirates placed Ryan Doumit on the DL after breaking his thumb on a passed ball, and will be out at least a month.  It's a shame - Doumit was looking like a top catcher thus far.  Ronny Paulino will get the majority of the PT behind the plate. The Reds officially placed Jeff Keppinger on the DL with a broken kneecap, and called up IF Paul Janish [MiLB Value $12.33] from AAA.  Dusty Baker plans to shockingly [insert sarcasm here] go with the veteran Jerry Hairston Jr. at SS. Jim Hoey will be out for the season following shoulder surgery. Transactions: The Rangers activated OF Marlon Byrd from the DL, sending down 3B Travis Metcalf to make room. The Cubs have signed OF Jim Edmonds.  ...

Odds and Ends: Jacque, Lee Hak-ju, Tavarez
2008-05-14 10:51:00
Here's today's collection of links. The Tigers weren't able to trade Jacque Jones; he'll become a free agent tomorrow.  The Marlins are expected to make an offer. The Cubs signed a Korean high school shortstop named Lee Hak-ju.  Aaron Shinsano, who works for the Cubs as a scout, says the team believes he'd have been a first round pick in the states. Giants owner Peter Magowan is expected to step down Friday. Troy Renck says the Rox still want Julian Tavarez but won't give up pitching prospect Brandon Hynick.  Baseball America ranked Hynick eighth among Rockies prospects, they describe him as a command guy with a decent splitter. Not a surprise, but Jon Garland isn't likely to sign back with the White Sox.
Odds & Ends
2008-05-14 07:40:00
Injuries: Cardinals reliever Tyler Johnson will undergo arthroscopic surgery today. Jeff Keppinger broke his kneecap after fouling a pitch off of it in the second inning; he played the game until the fourth.  Kepp will undergo an MRI today; we should have a better estimate of the time he'll miss when they get the results of that. Transactions: The Pirates called up P Marino Salas [MiLB Value $15.55], replacing John Van Benschoten.  Salas and his 7.98 career K/9 could be a welcome addition to an NL-only bullpen. Misc.: Eric Gagne is back as the closer in Milwaukee.  He picked up the save against the Dodgers last night. While watching Mike & Mike this morning, I heard Steve Phillips say that the Mitchell Report was having an effect on the power numbers at the big leagues, as he thinks people have been "scared straight" from using steroids.  Regardless of the reason, power is certainly declining this year.  Check out the decline in slugging percentage in t...
Teen goes to prom in skimpy dress, ends up in bracelets
2008-05-14 07:09:00
Marche Taylor ended up in handcuffs after wearing a skimpy dress to her high school prom in Houston. The fireworks started when a chaperone refused to let the teen into the dance because the gold number she was wearing showed way too much skin. ?She shook her head, she was like ?you are not getting into this prom,?? Taylor tells KHOU-TV. ?We were arguing back and forth because I wanted to know why I can?t get into my prom.? Eventually, things grew so heated that school officials called in a uniformed police officer, who escorted Taylor out of the building in handcuffs. ?It was revealing in such nature it was not appropriate for the prom,? Madison High School Principal Aubrey Todd tells the station.

Odds and Ends: Jacque, Vizquel, Greinke

Today's linkage... An MLBTR chat will take place in this space at 2pm CST - get your questions ready! I will also be hopping on ESPN-1580 (Columbia, MO) today at 4:20pm CST. Jacque Jones prefers to play for the Marlins...I imagine he will end up there. GM bloodlines courtesy of Batter's Box. Omar Vizquel wants to play in '09, if he has a good offensive year in '08. The White Sox do not intend to overpay their 8th overall pick this June. The Royals haven't had any extension talks yet with Zack Greinke, who would become a free agent after the 2010 season.  Greinke says he doesn't know what he's worth.  The market says about $11MM over the 2009-10 seasons. J.P. Ricciardi says he's done tinkering with his offense.
Odds & Ends

Injuries: This one hurts.  Rafael Furcal will hit the DL with a lower back strain, after missing five games due to the same injury.  He was off to an amazing start, giving many fantasy owners great hope for the season.  Chin-Lung Hu is an internal option to replace him, though Luis Maza [MiLB Value $17.47] was mentioned as someone to take Furcal's active roster spot. John Smoltz is throwing again.  Recovering from rotator cuff and bicep tendon inflammation, he threw 45 pitches from 60 feet.  He'll throw from 90 feet on Wednesday, and is aiming for a return to the Braves later this month. Sean Casey was activated from the DL by the Red Sox, who DFA'd Julian "I Fought the Bullpen Phone and the Bullpen Phone Won" Tavarez to make room. Pedro Martinez is going to throw a simulated game against minor leaguers on Wednesday.  Martinez is returning from a strained left hamstring sustained in his season debut on April 1. Odds and Ends: Millwood, Posey, Igawa
2008-05-12 13:02:00
Here's the latest link collection. Former Dodgers GM Paul DePodesta is now blogging for the public.  He currently works for the Padres as Special Assistant for Baseball Operations. In his words, Kevin Millwood felt a stabbing pain even though he hadn't been stabbed.  He's on the shelf with a groin injury, taking him off the trade market temporarily. Rays Index had some quality draft links yesterday about the Rays and their #1 pick.  Jim Callis of Baseball America says catcher Buster Posey is "the current favorite." Joel Sherman wonders what might've been if the Yankees had signed Ted Lilly instead of Kei Igawa. Ken Davidoff reminds us of the Padres' past claim on Igawa, and also notes Boston's interest. Giants owner Peter Magowan may move on. This email exchange between Dan Graziano of the Newark Star-Ledger and Carlos Delgado's agent David Sloane is entertaining. Here's a valuable free agent to consider: Leo Mazzone.

After a weekend off to celebrate my college graduation, I'm back in the saddle today.  NBJ's should return to the normal posting schedule.  Let's start with a round-up of all the moves since Thursday: Injuries: Vernon Wells broke his wrist, and should be out for 6-8 weeks.  The newly acquired Brad Wilkerson should see increased PT with the injury.  Chone Figgins hit the DL with a strained right hamstring, calling up Kendry Morales.  Maicer Izturis is nearing his return, and figures to pick up some PT with Figgins' absence. The Cubs brought Scott Eyre back from the DL, sending down Sean Marshall to make room.  Eyre was suffering from left elbow inflammation, and logged a 6.75 ERA in seven minor league appearances. The Reds placed Kent Mercker on the DL with lower back pain, calling up the oft-recalled P Bill Bray from AAA. The Nats placed catchers Paul Lo Duca and Johnny Estrada on the DL, clearing space for the return of OF Elijah Dukes and C Jesus...

Odds And Ends: Reyes, Colon, Indians, Nationals
2008-05-11 17:08:00
A few notes from the MLBiverse... Anthony Reyes, who has been the object of much trade speculation, made his first start at AAA on Friday night. Reyes pitched 3+ scoreless innings with a strict pitch-count. The Cardinals appear to be reconverting Reyes into a starter in the hopes of increasing his value for potential trade partners. Jim Bowden hinted that he may implement a full-fledged youth movement in the near future, noting that a number of top prospects are close to being ready. Specifically, he mentioned two outfielders which would likely mean that Bowden will seek to move Austin Kearns and/or Wily Mo Pena. Kearns is due $8MM next year and there is a $10MM option for 2010 ($1M buyout). Pena may be easier to move with only a $5MM team option for 2009. Justice B. Hill suggests that the Indians are now paying the price for their inability to swing a deal this past offseason for another offensive weapon at one of the corner outfield spots or third base. The timing of the story was...
Odds & Ends: Padres, Maddux, Anthony Reyes
2008-05-11 14:03:00
A few Odds & Ends with a San Diego focus: Tom Krasovic of the Union Tribune notes that the Padres are close to completing a trade for a reliever with "good stuff" according to Kevin Towers.  It does not say who it is, but it should be someone better than LHPs Joe Thatcher, who would be sent down, and Glendon Rusch, who was just outrighted yesterday.  Rusch has 3 days to accept his assignment.  He most likely will as he signed a minor league deal after missing all of '07.  Stay tuned to see who the Padres acquire.  Any guesses? "If [Anthony] Reyes enjoys success as a major-league pitcher, it will likely occur elsewhere," writes Joe Stauss of the St. Louis Dispatch.  This is old news - two years old actually, if you go back to a March '06 MLBTR post.  We're just waiting for Cards GM John Mozeliak to lower his price... Tim Sullivan brings us a quote from Jake Peavy, "He can help somebody. It sucks that this is probably the last year of his care...
Odds And Ends: Benitez, David Wells, Delgado
2008-05-10 18:46:00
And for my first trick: My very first Odds and Ends. The Toronto Star's aptly named Blue Jay's blog reports the team placed Vernon Wells on the 15-day DL, and they expect him to be out six to eight weeks after fracturing his left wrist during Friday night's game. The Jay's also placed reliever Jeremy Accardo on the 15-day DL with a strained right forearm. As replacements, the Jays will call up infielder Joe Inglett and veteran hurler Armando Benitez. With Wells out, do the Jays re-enter the Barry Bonds speculation market? David Wells in Pinstripes? No deal says Joe Girardi. Wells did look comfy during a recent appearance on the not-aptly-called Best Damn Sports Show Period. Mets manager Willie Randolph had penciled slugger Carlos Delgado in the seventh spot before Friday's game against the Reds (postponed due to rain), marking the lowest spot he's been slotted at in 12 years. Delgado didn't see it as a demotion, but still, in light of the recent talk about his release, it rai...
Odds And Ends: Neshek, Gallardo, Casanova, Henn, Haynes
2008-05-10 12:06:00
Couple of injuries, couple of designations, and a waiver claim. Twins reliever Pat Neshek has an acute partial tear of the UCL. Yes, that's the Tommy John ligament. He won't throw for at least three months, so his season is essentially over. There's no word on whether he'll undergo surgery. I remember hearing over the winter that Neshek was having elbow problems. Not that we didn't pretty much know this already, but Yovani Gallardo has confirmed that he'll have surgery on his torn ACL. My fantasy team weeps. With Ramon Castro coming off the DL, the Mets have DFA Raul Casanova. The best bet is that he'll clear waivers and head to AAA. The Padres have claimed LHP Sean Henn off waivers. He was DFA by the Yankees last week. He was once a highly touted prospect, reportedly hitting 100 on the gun (though I think those reports were exaggerated). With the return of Cliff Floyd from the DL, the Rays have no room for OF Nathan Haynes, and have designated him for assignment. Posted by...
Odds and Ends: Bay, Roberts, Cliff Lee
2008-05-09 18:31:00
And here we have some random links I've collected over the past day or so. The Bucs will try to fill their open 40-man spots through low profile moves, not unlike the Jason Michaels one.  They won't move Jason Bay or Xavier Nady until they're truly out of it.  4.5 games out of the wild card, they still have a prayer here on May 9th. Keith Law's top 60 prospects list for the June draft has been published.  Shortstop Tim Beckham heads the list. Gordon Wittenmyer looks back on the Cubs players rumored to be traded for Brian Roberts. Juan Uribe, partially on the strength of a great takeout slide, still has life with the White Sox. Nick Piecoro reminds us that the D'Backs were close to acquiring Cliff Lee in a deal for Carlos Quentin this winter.  That would just be unfair, Lee as a part of that rotation.  Ken Davidoff notes that the Mets discussed Lee as well. So...did the Yankees really have a shot at Micah Owings in the Randy Johnson deal?

Odds and Ends: Botts, Red Sox, McLouth
2008-05-07 17:01:00
Roundup of links! According to Jamey Newberg, Jason Botts has cleared waivers.  He probably won't get another chance with the Rangers though. Gordon Edes notes that the Red Sox have five picks in the first three rounds of the June draft.  Even though they don't start until the 30th pick, the Sox have had much success in recent years. No extension talks have begun with Nate McLouth, but Dejan Kovacevic does expect it to happen. I updated the fantasy baseball closers depth chart over at RotoAuthority.
