Hi all.. I am faced with a project which involves designing an energy conservation demonstration rig for 1st year uni students. I came up with a few ideas. I want to produce KE by letting a mass fall from rest ( stored PE) which winds up a flywheel (KE) which in turn produces some other PE (spring?
Celebrate Earth Day Today!

Thankfully Google has their logo tricked out on almost every important day in the calendar year. Today's Google logo image looks like this: That's right, April 22nd is Earth Day! The best way to celebrate is to be good to the Earth by conserving resources better, planting trees and trying to recycle appropriately. The Monetizer participated in the Earth's Dark hour last month, where lights were shut off for just 1 hour in an energy conservation effort. That's yet another way to celebrate, you could try reducing your electricity consumption today for an hour, or two, or as much as the entire day...It will go a long way to helping the place we all love to reside on and Make Money off of!Here's some suggestions for how to celebrate Earth Day:Plant some trees or flowers outside (on your own property).Wash your clothes in cold water.Hang your clothes out to dry on a line instead of using the dryer.Turn off lights or unnecessary appliances. Or try to go without them today!Adjus...
Energy Conservation - Simple Tips that Will Reduce Your Energy Bill
2008-04-17 15:33:00
There are many good reasons to conserve energy. If we use less gas, oil and electricity we will save money, and the pollution associated with extracting and using fossil fuels will decrease. Reducing greenhouse gas production may help to reverse global warming. In a nutshell - conservation of energy has both personal and societal benefits. Most people are concerned with making their money last longer and energy conservation can help by reducing our energy costs. Homeowners can do many things to cut down on their energy needs. Perhaps the best thing they can do to is to install better insulation to retain warm and cool air.Heating and air conditioning are the biggest energy consumers of the average household. Much of the heat and cool air escapes because of poorly insulated roofs, walls, doors, and windows. In fact in a lot of cases heating and cooling is responsible for around 50% of your energy costs. Improving insulation will result in greater conservation of energy and lesser ener...

Energy Conservation Tips For People

Energy conservation is something you just have to invest in. If you do not do so, you are harming the environment and you are keeping the cost of fuel very high. Any of us can benefit by using a few of these tips to help us to shave the costs of energy within our homes and even in the business. Which will you do first?1. Check windows and repair as needed. As one of the largest energy losses, it is necessary to consider this need as one the first priorities on your list.2. Check your water heater. Is it set at the lowest possible comfortable and sanitary setting? It is insulated for optimum benefit? Doing these things will insure that your water heater is working at its best for energy savings.3. As your light bulbs burn out, switch to florescent Energy Star light bulbs. These will last you quite a long while. They will also use less than half of the amount of energy to light your room. Don't do this all at once, but slowly as needed.4. Turn off anything that you can. Lower the set...
The Hour the Earth Went Dark
2008-03-31 05:48:00
Not quite the entire Earth, but millions of people around the globe observed March 29th's "Earth Hour", a global effort to show how we can have an impact on the climate. The premise was to turn off your lights between 8 and 9 PM during your local time, which in turn would conserve energy in a big, unified way. Many cities participated with hosted events to observe the hour. Not only homes, but restaurants, local businesses and even landmarks turned their lights out as part of the event. According to news reports, even the Queen of Denmark shut lights out to be part of the effort.Earth Hour was started over 10 years ago by the WWF (not the pro wrestling league, but World Wildlife Fund). According to their site's info page on the effort:Created by WWF in Sydney, Australia in 2007, Earth Hour has grown from a single event into a global movement. In 2008, millions of people, businesses, governments and civic organizations in nearly 200 cities around the globe will turn out for Ea...
The Day Google Went Dark
2008-03-29 19:39:00
Today when I first went to Google, I immediately thought Firefox or my PC had some sort of virus going on. The entire Google frontpage is black today (as seen above), but it's no virus or reason for concern. Today Google has "shut off its lights", and is reminding people across the world to do the same, from 8 to 9 PM during their local time. The act is an effort to conserve energy for that hour. Here's more from Google about today's "Earth Hour":Google users in the United States will notice today that we "turned the lights out" on the Google.com homepage as a gesture to raise awareness of a worldwide energy conservation effort called Earth Hour. As to why we don't do this permanently - it saves no energy; modern displays use the same amount of power regardless of what they display. However, you can do something to reduce the energy consumption of your home PC by joining the Climate Savers Computing Initiative. On Saturday, March 29, 2008, Earth Hour invites people around the...

Energy Conservation in a small office is not as difficult as it seems....
2008-03-10 04:26:00
According to me it has only been recently that issues such as energy conservation, effects of global warming, save the earth etc. are really been taken more seriously by the small business office. Better late than never. We are all to blame for this as we all felt that as individuals there was not much we could do and very conveniently left this responsibility to our governments hoping their agreements and all their efforts of decreasing the release of green house gases by the industrialized & developing nations & stopping the deforestation in South America would be some of things that would really solve the problem. But if given a thought seriously all of us could really contribute to saving the earth and conserving energy in our own little way.How do we conserve energy in a small office ?1. Switch off Lights, Fans & Air Conditioners when not in useMore often that not, we leave electrical equipment such as lights, fans and ACs on even when there is no - one in the room/ca...

Ghana News :: Energy conservation, Ghana goes for CFL ::: Breaking News News in Ghana technology: "Government on Thursday said it would set up a plant for the manufacture of Candescent Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) in the country as part of measures to promote efficient use of energy in the country. Announcing this on Thursday during the presentation of the 2008 Budget Statement to Parliament, Mr Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu, Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, said the Government would, therefore, introduce a legislation to phase out the importation and use of incandescent lamps. He said Government's efforts to resolve the crisis have focused on modernising and expanding power infrastructure, ensuring full cost recovery of power supply and the productive and efficient use of energy. 'While increasing the percentage of households with access to electricity supply, Government is mindful of the need to conserve power,' he said. Under the proposed legislation, CFLs would replace the high p...

Here is a great documentary about energy conservation: Kilowatt Ours. The first half is about coal and its harmful side effects. More than half of America's electricity is generated by coal. The second part which is about energy conservation and alternative energy sources is an uplifting contrast to the first part. Did you know that recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a tv for more than three hours?

Your Television and Energy Conservation
2007-11-09 10:21:00
Your television can be a great entertainer as we all know; indispensable in most households actually. However, like so many things it is important to choose wisely and to use with care. Increasingly, the general public is becoming aware of our environment and the conservation of energy. In the past I've discussed the end of life issues related to your television; about recycling and such. (read my earlier article here) At this point, I just want to make mention of some of the things to consider on the front end, when you are selecting your television and beginning to use it that can help in reducing it's demands for energy. One starting point is to consider a set that has the Energy Star certification. Of course, even this doesn't assure you are getting a model that is truly the most power conscious. The technology behind the television and the screen size are often major determinants of it's power consumption.  As you might guess, a small screen consumes less power so if one...
