The Weekly Carboholic: boosting energy efficiency is hard to do
2008-05-14 22:16:00
Energy efficiency is tricky. You might think that increasing energy efficiency would be a no-brainer, since it usually pays for itself, improves the reliability of electrical transmission systems, reduces the number of power plants that need to be built, and reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. You’d be wrong. And last week, The Economist had a great overview as to why improving energy efficiency is so difficult. And according to the article, the reasons that energy efficiency gains aren’t metaphorically exploding all over the place come down to the intersections of these three areas: prices, markets, and governments. Price affects energy efficiency in at least two ways. The first is that energy efficient products almost always cost more to purchase, and so the up-front costs that consumers see cause “sticker shock”. This is obvious when you compare the price of a compact florescent lightbulb to that of an incandescent - the CFL costs a lot more even...

How To Install Leviton 6260M Electronic Timer Switch
2008-04-29 02:24:00
In a previous post, Leviton 6260M Electronic Timer Switch, I wrote about these new timer switches that I purchased to use in our three bathrooms. Using timer switches will allow us to run the fans after we've left the room in order to make sure all the excess moisture is removed from the room. This is a great way to make sure enough fresh air is introduced to tight homes and also to make sure we're getting all that excess moisture out so we won't have mold and mildew problems.Tonight I installed the first Leviton 6260M Electronic Timer Switch. The specifications for these timers require that you have a ground and a neutral at the switch location. This is an important detail that you should investigate before you buy these switches. If you just have a switch leg in the box, i.e. the hot leg only which would be two blacks or a black and a white thats marked, then this timer will not work properly.Always remember to shut off the breaker and power to any circuit you're going to be w...

Solar Garden Lights
2008-04-23 01:20:00
Today I received the perfect gift for Earth Day. The kind folks at Malibu - Lighting the Way to Outdoor Living, sent me some really great solar garden lights to try out and do a review on. As you can see I installed them this afternoon after work and I was VERY impressed not only with the quality of the lights but also the ease of installation and the simplicity of the system. My wife and I have wanted to put solar walkway lights along our walkway since we built the house and I've been putting it off mostly because I couldn't find any lights that looked "rugged" enough to handle the elements and my sons outdoor torture! Let me tell you I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of these lights. The lights that they sent me to review are the SolarSelect Premium Metal Garden Lights - LZ3001-2. The light housing is made of cast aluminum which I think is great because most solar lights on the market are made of plastic. These solar garden lights use two white LED light bulbs and an inter...
Earth Day 2008
2008-04-22 14:13:00
April 22nd is Earth Day. Why not take some time today to think of a new way to help out mother earth. Maybe you can start recycling, maybe you can start using more energy efficient light bulbs, maybe you can buy Energy Star rated appliances, maybe you can choose Green Building products for your next remodeling project, maybe you can use low flow shower heads, sink faucets and toilets, maybe you can make a difference. If we all take one small step each year there will certainly be a positive effect on our environment.Tags: home improvement, home improvement blog, environment, energy efficiency, energy star, green building
Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs
2008-04-20 21:10:00
I've finally decided to jump on board and try Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFL) in my new home. Today I bought three GE Energy Smart 20 watt CFL's. The 20 watt CFL is equivalent to a 75 watt incandescent light bulb. These new bulbs are supposed to last 6 years or 10,000 hours of operation. An incandescent light bulb typically only lasts about 750 hours. That means you'd need 14 incandescent bulbs to each fluorescent bulb. The cost of the bulb is payed for just comparing bulbs not even considering the energy savings.Obviously using these bulbs is a great way to start living "green". Some may argue that the Mercury contained in them poses a significant environmental issue, however, with proper education people will realize that they need to be disposed of properly. These bulbs are also energy star certified.I put three of these in an overhead light fixture in our breakfast nook and I was quite impressed. The color of the light has improved drastically and the bulbs come on almo...
Leviton 6260M Electronic Timer Switch
2008-04-18 02:23:00
Yesterday I received the three Leviton 6260M electronic timer switches that I ordered for the bath fans. These switches allow you to choose pre-set times of 10 min., 20 min., 30 min., and 60 mins. I plan on installing them this weekend in each of the three bathrooms. The unit has 4 wires, a green, white, blue and black. The installation instructions (as usual these directions are not very good) include a wiring diagram that says:1. Connect the green wire to the ground.2. Connect the black wire to the line voltage.3. Connect the blue wire to the hot wire of the fixture.4. Connect the white wire to all of the neutrals.I do a post this weekend on how to wire one of these up. The one problem I can see is the device is fairly large so fitting all the wires, wire nuts and device into the box will most likely be a HUGE challenge.Tags: home improvement, home improvement blog, electrical timer switch, energy star

Lighting News & Product Information: Does energy efficiency need to be
2008-01-25 12:53:00
Lighting News & Product Information: Does energy efficiency need to be legislated? Although we sell energy efficient light bulbs and fixtures, I've asked myself if this needs to be mandated through legislation? I would say that it doesn't, the free market can take care of that. Government could give some incentives, like tax breaks, but saying that by a certain date, no more incandescent light bulbs can't be used, doesn't really help. Why? Because energy efficient lighting is already a great deal, people should be doing it already. With compact fluorescent bulbs using 75% less energy, and now reasonably priced, doesn't it make natural sense to reduce electricity like this all on your own, without a mandate? Along with this one way to reduce electric costs and save energy, there will be many more in the future that will outstrip the efficiency of CFL's anyway, like upcoming LED light bulb technology. Instead of an edict from on high in Washington, why not give tax breaks to...

Alliance to Save Energy - Promoting Energy Efficiency World Wide: News: Last Chance for Homeowners to Reduce Federal Income Taxes With Energy-Efficiency Home Improvements: "The window is closing for homeowners to take advantage of valuable federal income tax credits for energy-efficiency home improvements, advises the Alliance to Save Energy. Unless Congress acts quickly to extend the tax credits worth up to $500 per household, these federal incentives for homeowners to increase their homes? energy efficiency will expire on December 31. Consumers are facing heating costs of nearly $1,000 this winter ? an 11 percent increase from last year ? and have seen overall 2007 home energy costs spiral to $2,100, according to Energy Information Administration data. By installing the qualifying energy-efficiency home improvements before the end of this year, they can cut their 2007 incomes taxes by as much at $500, enjoy lower home energy costs and increased indoor comfort for years to come, an...

2007-11-30 17:42:00
Energy efficiency lighting market worth £200m: "These are the findings of the report from AMA Research, which said it has witnessed 'healthy levels of growth over the last two years'. Other factors, highlighted by the report, that have benefited the market include increasing energy costs, and better education. 'In addition, a number of schemes and subsidy programmes aimed at promoting energy efficiency in the home and improvements to products, both in terms of design and in technical performance, have also stimulated strong market growth,' the report said. It continued: 'Product development may lead to a change in the market structure in the medium-term, and LEDs, which are widely considered to be one of the most promising 'pending' technologies, are expected by some to 'reach or exceed the level of CFLs in the UK market' soon after 2010.' Energy efficiency, Hanukkah, Lighting TerraPass: Fight global warming, promote alternative energy: "TerraPass has long promoted the compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) as a good affordable alternative to old-fashioned incandescent light bulbs, since they last six times longer and use one fourth the energy. In fact, we send them out with every Home TerraPass purchase. But there is newer lighting technology, the LED, that will push things forward even further. LEDs (light-emitting diodes) are still a bit pricy, but they contain no mercury and are twice as efficient than CFLs. They also last up to 50,000 hours ? fifty times longer than incandescent bulbs. So plug one in and get ready for 4167 crazy nights"
Decoupling to Promote Energy Efficiency.
2007-11-29 12:35:00
Global warming and cost-cutting are moving regulatory authorities to give utilities more incentive to promote energy efficiency by "decoupling" utility’s recovery of fixed costs from the volume of amount of electricity sold. The theory behind decoupling is that traditional rate structures discourage utilities from promoting energy efficiency because their profits suffer when customers cut back on

Other Voices -- Howard A. Learner: Quiet Revolution in Energy Efficiency to Help Solve Global Warming Problems: "Today’s incandescent light bulbs will be replaced largely by compact fluorescent lamps over the next five years. The European Union is phasing out incandescent bulbs. Many manufacturers will soon stop marketing traditional bulbs here. CFLs use 75% less electricity to achieve the same amount of illumination, and they last longer. This one market transformation alone can reduce the St. Louis region’s overall electricity demand by about 10%."
