Schoolboys punished with detention for refusing to kneel in class and pray
2008-07-18 13:26:00 DAILY MAIL says on 04th July 2008, 'Two schoolboys were given detention after refusing to kneel down and 'pray to Allah' during a religious education lesson.Parents were outraged that the two boys from year seven (11 to 12-year-olds) were punished for not wanting to take part in the practical demonstration of how Allah is worshipped. They said forcing their children to take part in the exercise at Alsager High School, near Stoke-on-Trent - which included wearing Muslim headgear - was a breach of their human rights.Alsager School, near Stoke, has received furious complaints from parents after two Year 7 boys were punished for refusing to kneel to Allah during a religious studies classOne parent, Sharon Luinen, said: "This isn't right, it's taking things too far."I understand that they have to learn about other religions. I can live with that but it is taking it a step too far to be punished because they wouldn't join in Muslim prayer."Making them pray to Allah, who isn't who th...

English votes on English matters - Unique Powers.
2008-06-09 11:07:00 Why is the question of English votes on English matters so difficult to sort out? We've had Malcolm Rifkind's Grand Committee, which it is argued will only add another layer of government. Now after a lengthy process Ken Clarke comes up with another bloody stupid idea. From the Telegraph: He (Ken Clarke) is said to have advised allowing all MPs to vote on English legislation at the initial second reading stage of parliamentary scrutiny. But only English MPs would get to vote during the detailed committee stage of the legislative process, where real changes can be effected. At the third and final reading, all MPs could once again vote, but a new parliamentary undertaking would prevent any party using Scottish votes to block amendments made by English MPs.Why oh why can't we just stop Scottish MPs voting in England on any matter that would normally be devolved to Scotland? In other words - any subject that English MPs are not allowed to vote on in Scotland. Surely that would be a f...

New England Transgender Pride March: Photos and Reflections
2008-06-08 17:13:00 The first-ever New England Transgender Pride March took place this weekend in Northampton, and I was there with my "Episcopal Church Welcomes You" rainbow tank top and a digital camera to capture the pageantry. I was hoping to blend into the MassEquality contingent, but they were scattered around other groups this time, so I just milled around looking like I knew what I was doing, and took lots of pictures. Next thing I knew, someone had handed me a bunch of purple and white balloons, and I was marching behind the lead banner, shouting "Trans Pride Now". Without either of my moms this time, I felt anxious that I didn't have the right to be there. Straight allies are important, but on the other hand, was I co-opting someone else's oppressed subculture? (I had a Native American Studies professor in college who was apoplectic about this.) The fact is, when you're genuinely weird, and view all human social categories as potential idols to be decons...

Around the AFC East: New England Patriots
2008-06-06 14:30:00 Back with round two of this week's "Around the AFC East." It's time to talk Patriots. And to do that is MaPataFan from Pats Pulpit: Matty I: I know I asked about the secondary last time, but two players in particular I have questions about. Rodney Harrison is entering the final year of his contract. What kind of contribution do you expect from him in '08 and do you think he'll be back beyond this season? Also, last year's 1st round pick, Brandon Meriweather, has been rumored to possibly switch from safety to corner. What do you expect his role to be this season and will be make the kind of impact that a former 1st round pick should make entering year #2? MaPatsFan: Harrison is 35 and, as you state, in the last year of his contract. Even though he's been a huge asset to the team (and sometimes distraction, re: HGH), Belichick would not renew his contract in a heartbeat if he wasn't making the grade. It's even questionable whether he...

85.---Roman Eagle., from Old England: A Pictorial Museum (1845), added on 6
2008-06-06 04:46:00 The cavalry and the war-chariots of the active Britons met the invader on the beach; and whilst the soldiers hesitated to leave the ships, the standard-bearer of the tenth legion leaped into the water, exclaiming, as Cæsar has recorded, “Follow me, my fellow-soldiers, unless you will give up your eagle to the enemy! I, at least, will do my duty to the republic and to our general!” (Fig. 85.) The Romans made good their landing. The symbols of the great republic were henceforward to become more familiar to the skin-clothed and painted Britons (Fig. 79); but not as yet were they to be bound with the chain of the captive (Fig. 81). Why the preachers were stopped. It was the Muslim cop!
2008-06-05 21:01:00 The Daily Mail reports, on 02nd June 2008,"Two Christian preachers were stopped from handing out Bible extracts by police because they were in a Muslim area, it was claimed yesterday. They say they were told by a Muslim police community support officer that they could not preach there and that attempting to convert Muslims to Christianity was a hate crime. The community officer is also said to have told the two men: 'You have been warned. If you come back here and get beat up, well, you have been warned.'A police constable who was present during the incident in the Alum Rock area of Birmingham is also alleged to have told the preachers not to return to the district. It comes amid growing concern over the development of Islamic 'no-go areas'.The preachers, Americans Arthur Cunningham and Joseph Abraham, are demanding an apology and compensation from West Midlands Police. They say their treatment breaks the Human Rights Act, which guarantees freedom of religious expression. The preach...

Captain Fantastic Leads England To Victory
2008-06-02 13:40:00 David Beckham captained England who won 3-0 win against Trindad and Tobago. As usual with Becks, some have taken a cynical view that his England captaincy was a politically-motivated stunt. You see last nights game was Trindad's centenary, and FIFA vice-president Jack Warner is from Trinidad and he gets to vote for the Football Association's 2018 World Cup bid, which England are hoping to win.OK it seems suspect, but why do people look at it this way. David is still a very much a part of the England side. His assists and passion for the game and playing for his country prove that. I wish people would just let him get on with what he does best.It does not help when Jack Warner says to the press, "If the English team had come with all its top stars to Trinidad and Beckham wasn't here, they would have killed me in this country. If Beckham alone had come, that would have been enough for me."As for the game, it was very much a one-sided affair. Once England were 3-0 up, they took t...

David Beckham Will Captain England Against Trinidad and Tobago
2008-05-31 18:59:00 David Beckham has been named the captain for tomorrows friendly against Trinidad & Tobago. It will be the first time that he has worn the armband since the 2006 World Cup, when David resigned as captain of the team.Capello has rotated the captaincy during a series of friendlies, and will make a final decision about who will be the permanent leader, before the next World Cup qualifying series gets under way."People will always question whether I can still play at this level but I want to carry on. I am not ready to stop playing for my country," said Beckham. "I have a few more wrinkles now but I still feel I can do what I did 10 years ago. I was happy with my performance against France in March, my first game under Fabio Capello, and it was the same against the United States the other night. I was happy to set up the opening goal.""When you have worked on things during the week, like where the players have to run to and where I have to put the ball to, and it comes off in a game, ...
