Removing the BAD words from the English Language
2009-03-04 14:02:00 Words needing removed from English Language In this podlet I talk about, yep you guessed it, "BAD WORDS", but dont be fooled! I'm not taking about swear words, slang, euphemism, expletivies. I am talking about very special words, words that make us unhappy (or make others unhappy). Certain words that I think are hard-wired into our brains to remove motiivation, to remove wants and desires, to generally make us feel miserable. What could these words possibly be? What could possibly cause so much trouble in our daily lives? Have a listen and see! Ref: NeuroLinguisticProgramming (NLP)Read More...

Defending China's English Language Press
2008-05-03 09:17:00 Last week on a Shandong Airlines flight, I overheard someone in the seat behind me say something to his fellow traveler along the lines of the following, in reference to a front page headline in the China Daily (I think): "'Chinese people's feelings hurt by foreign media.' What kind of mature country has a headline like that?" The two of them then launched into a fifteen minute discussion excoriating China's English language media. I was reminded of that conversation today in reading a post on James Fallows' blog, entitled, "The bright side #4: Why I've missed the (English-language) Chinese press." In his post, Fallows rightfully makes light of the May 1 China Daily's lead headline, which reads "Happiness abounds as country cheers" and includes a picture of T1bet*n university students in rejoicing over the Olympics. Fallows tongue in cheek take on this story: There are serious aspects to the enormous gap between Chinese and international coverage of the Olympics, T1b*...

Murdering The English Language
2008-04-13 17:44:00 Hantu Laut How many languages are there in the world ? It is not an easy question to answer. In Papua New Guinea alone there are an estimated 800 over languages spoken by small pockets of inhabitants scattered all over the island archipelago

The English language
2008-03-14 21:23:00 When I moved to Korea I knew that I would have a whole new language to contend with. So, in preparation, I learned Hangul (the alphabet, or written Korean) and a few handy phrases. I learned a lot more when I was there.I am discovering that anywhere you go language will be different, even among countries that speak the same language. I already knew that British and Canadian English had differences, as does American, Australian and South African, but I have been surprised at the number of different and new words I have learned. These are words that I would never (or very rarely) use in Canada that have become a regular part of my vocabulary. I've been compiling this list for a few weeks with the help of a friend at work... He loves it - it makes him feel like he's teaching me English!!!1. queue - we all know this means 'to line up', I just never used it before.2. trousers - as opposed to 'pants', which in England means 'underwear'.3. post - as in 'the mail'4. handbag - no, i...

D.C. United signs WFED as English language radio flagship
2008-02-21 20:16:00 D.C. United soccer has signed to air matches on WFED / 1050 (Federal News Radio) as its English language flagship station for the next two years. The Bonneville-owned WFED replaces previous rights holder WMET / 1160. WFED will air all 'competitive' matches for the team, a 30 minute post-game show and for Saturday matches, a 60-minute magazine-style pre-game show. Tony Limarzi will remain as the team's play-by-play voice with Alex Caudana joining in as a studio host.----This blogger and soccer fan is sorely disappointed by the new arrangement. The deal represents a major step backwards in signal coverage for D.C. United as both WFED's daytime and nighttime signals are markedly inferior to their counterparts offered by former flagship WMET. WFED's nighttime signal is an embarrassingly low 44 watts. Aside from internet feeds, there simply isn't going to be an English language radio audience for United matches past sunset. WFED may be called the flagship but the reality is that it...

Nation Group unveils new English-language newspaper
2007-12-13 07:55:00 Nation Group will launch what looks to be a direct competitor to its own English-language daily in March 2008. Xpress will become Thailand’s biggest newspaper by circulation (100,000 copies). After the cut backs that have taken place at The Nation over the past few months, you’ve got to wonder how they can justify launching a brand new publication that will essentially be the same as the existing one, albeit with a slick new design. Why not just remodel the existing brand? There is no word as to whether The Nation will be phased out. Xpress will initially be free. The Nation as a standalone newspaper struggles to have its pages filled with the sort of news stories Nation Group wants in Xpress. Will be interesting to see how this one pans out.
