English...DO YOU SPEAK IT?!
2009-11-09 14:13:00 Teresa Puente of Chicanisima recently wrote about an incident in which a Dallas Police officer cited a woman for driving without being able to speak English. Friday she did another post discussing the revelation that Dallas PD has issued 39 similar tickets since 2007, indicating that the initial citation that hit the news was not an entirely unique incident. Still, 39 tickets out of approximately 800,000 citations issued since 2007 doesn't exactly prove this is a widespread practice. It's not hard for me to believe that a department of 3,600 officers might have a few benighted cops who either can't read a statute book, can't work the pull-down menu on a squad car computer, or have a hardon for Latinos. ...
In Dallas police issued 39 tickets for not speaking English
2009-11-06 23:01:00 Last week I wrote a blog post about a police officer in Dallas who gave a woman a ticket for not speaking English. He used a citation normally reserved for commercial drivers and the ticket was later thrown out. Now it turns out that the Dallas police chief acknowledged there have been 39 tickets issued to drivers who didn't speak English since 2007, according to a story in the Dallas Morning News. This is ridiculous. It looks like they need to so some sensitivity training in Dallas where the population is 44 percent Hispanic. And the New York Times also wrote an editorial this week saying the Dallas police department should be embarrassed. In Texas they do offer part of the driver's exam in...

China Law Journals In English
2009-09-20 21:28:00 Chinese Law Prof Blog recently did a post on Chinese law journals in English. His list consists of the following journals currently in publication: Frontiers of Law in China. Peking University Journal of Legal Studies. No online edition, but you can subscribe here. Tsinghua China Law Review. This is brand new, but it shows tremendous promise. I was provided with its first issue and I was quite impressed. It reads like a legitimate U.S. law school law journal in pretty much every respect. The Tsinghua journal's Board of Editors is comprised of "students at the Tsinghua University School of Law, both Chinese law students and foreign students in the LLM Program in Chinese Law." I know its Editor-in-Chief, Carlton Willey, and I know how committed he is on making this Journal a must read for those doing legal business in China. I suggest you check it out.

Ichiroh Manga, Volume 1 (English)
2009-09-14 21:00:00 When Yuri Network Correspondent Sean G. drew my attention to this manga, he did it in the least appealing way, much as he might have introduced me to a creepy relative. "This is Aunt Claudia. We have to invite her." lol So, while it wasn't high on my list of manga to read, it went onto the list and eventually, onto the pile of things to review. Ichiroh, Volume 1, follows the life of Nanako, a girl who fails to get into college, her friend Akane who shares her fate and friend Shiino who makes it in. These three are surrounded by other one or two joke characters that fill out the cast of this completely typical wackiness-filled 4-koma manga. As with most 4-panel strips, the comedy relies on goofy, abnormally extreme behaviors, puns, and exasperation on the part of the non-comic characters. If you've read any other 4-panel, you've read this one. In fact, other than the translation being in actual fluent English, it's not that different from Lucky Star. There was one thing that ...

"Lesbian" Comic: Peanut Butter, Volume 3 (English)
2009-09-11 02:37:00 Let's talk porn. It's not at all true that everyone knows porn when they see it. That's part of the meaning of the "L" in LFB. There are a lot of people who don't see any difference in say, true romance, and stalking or rape. Not just in straight porn, either. These themes are very very common in, oh, say, Yaoi/BL and "lesbian" porn for guys. Peanut Butter is American porn. It reads like a cross between a "true" letters to one of those porn mags that were kept under the counter of the Somerset Farms and only sold to cops and really sad looking guys, and one of those adult novels sold by Coles, when that chain inhabited all the malls of America. (If you don't remember either of these things, you are 1) too young to read Peanut Butter and 2) have missed *nothing,* except a few laughs at the bad writing in both.) It ostensibly is the diary of a severely out-of-proportion girl named Molly in her first semester at college surrounded by severely out-of-proportion other women and...

Click Manhwa, Volume 3 (English)
2009-09-07 23:17:00 It's a full-on "stress about your gender" a-thon in Click, Volume 3. Joonha, now trapped permanently in a woman's body, is not one whit less gynophobic than she was a a guy. Men's bodies, she says, "sure are strong and beautiful," while women's bodies are "impossible to move around in and annoying as hell." Yep, you sure gotta like Joonha, especially if you're into whining and self-loathing. And then there's Heewon Jun who, in frustration at her unresolved love for Joonha, has taken to being the meanest, most violent, crude girl she can be. She smokes, she uses physical violence and she curses up a storm. And she's brought to a screeching halt when her friend from her former school points out the obvious and tells her that the guy she's in love with...is a woman. Obviously. Duh. I mean, no guy would wear a skirt, right? It could be fun and Yuri-ish if she decides she doesn't care. I foresee "funny" sexual embarrassment. Then there's Joonha's actual real love of her liv...

Yuri Manga: Tetragrammaton Labyrinth, Volume 6 (English)
2009-09-06 22:39:00 In Volume 6 of Tetragrammaton Labyrinth, what was always implicit becomes finally explicit. As Angela, Meg and their allies face the evil, insane and powerful Gilles de Rais, and find that their own power comes up short against his, he raises the issue that has been the leitmotif of this entire series. Killing the living, raising the dead and stealing souls, he attests, is not for personal power. No, he commits heinous acts of brutality for *love.* It will come as no suprise that this fails to convince Angela to sympathize, but it brings up the obvious. De Rais asks Angela if she has anyone to love - truly love - give up her life for love. Well duh, dude. The final acts play out exactly as one expects. The good guys peel off one at a time to fight the bad guys, so we can be sad at our losses and the final confrontation has reversals and lots of screaming and blood and severed limbs. And, the ultimate sacrifice, as Angela gives up everything to keep Meg at her side. In the fina...

Lucky Star Manga, Volume 1 (English)

Wikipedia has been the most successful social media experiment in recent times. Started in 2001, the online encyclopedia has very quickly replaced Encyclopedia Brittanica as the most preferred destination for information seekers. What has been so dramatic in the growth of Wikipedia is that the contribution has been solely through volunteers and the foundation run with the help of donations! The website, including all the different languages, today has close to 13 million articles written by over 10 million registered users; not counting the several million other users who contribute as unregistered editors. From an Indian standpoint, Wikipedia has still got a lot of scope to grow considering that the Indian language sections of Wikipedia have had rela...

Alice on Deadlines Manga, Volume 4 (English)
2009-08-11 19:32:00 After yesterday's amazing interview this will immediately pale into the obscurity it deserves, but it has to be done. :-)We have, through much hardship and effort, made our way through to the final, climactic volume of Alice on Deadlines and still, the title remains the best part of the story. The final showdown is less of a showdown than a melee and characters are being stabbed through the gut left and right (with scythes. Seriously? Who uses a scythe to *stab*?!? I mean, yes - you can do it, but what a miserable misuse of a lovely weapon. My long-handled, edged-weapons-loving self protests.)But in no way is this really anything to do with the story. The story, such as it is, is really about Alice and Lapan, each stuck in a body that is not theirs and only one of them happy about it. So the final showdown with Regina comes and, instead of it being Lapan vs Regina, it's everyone vs everyone, with really hard to follow art, but we're able to parse a few key concepts. The big takeaw...

What remained unchanged was a brass bell whose frequency of tolls would announce different events and the calender day of August 1st - birthday of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak. This day was commemorated, year after year , with only one agenda - that of public speaking competition.Every year, select students would participate in classroom speaking competition on Lokmanya Tilak and they covered four aspects of his life. Aria the Natural, Part 2 Anime (English)
2009-07-29 21:00:00 Squeezing Yuri from Aria the Natural, Part 2 is like making an essential oil from a rose petal. It's a lot of work, takes a lot of petals and, in the end, what you have is a beautiful, but ephemeral scent. Which is not to say that it's not worth your time. Like a rose, Aria the Natural, has a timeless beauty. And like the rose, Aria provides a lovely atmosphere. And...if you are a fan of Aria or Okazu, you've seen this coming since the first simile...it is ironically the Crimson Rose of Aria herself, Akira, that provides one of those essential moments. The little bit of Yuri, should you wish to don my super high-powered UBER-YURI Goggles (go ahead, the world looks lovely in lavender) is provided by the early butchiness of Akira who, as you know, I think is totally gay for Alicia. Because I *want* her to be. :-) Her badass tomboyishness makes my day every time. I'm also sure that, at the very end, the akogare Akari has for Alicia is laid on thickly enough for folks who want to se...

Zombie Loan Manga, Volume 3 (English)
2009-07-24 23:46:00 Having sold her soul to the Ferryman, Michiru's life went from miserable to chaotic. But, in Zombie Loan, Volume 3, it's finally settling down into a pattern of hunting zombies with Shito and Chika in order to pay off the loan that keeps her alive. Of course, as with all things regarding credit, the late fees, renewal rates and interest are, in this case quite literally, a killer. The first half of this volume ends the Butterfly arc, in which /massive spoiler/ serves to /spoiler/ /spoiler/. Sorry, I'm just being silly. Chika's best friend ever turns out to totally not be what Chika thinks and, as a result, Chika falls into a depression. The Ferryman, in a uncharacteristic moment of noticing that his employees have feelings, decides to take them on a short getaway to build team spirit. Gin Tama Manga (English)
2009-07-15 21:00:00 Welcome to Wednesday on Okazu, the day I crash and burn and pass the baton to whomever is standing closest and doesn't think to run away. Today's victim Guest Reviewer is the much beloved, admired and bewildered Sean Gaffney, Okazu's resident LFB correspondent. Let's welcome Sean with this Laurel and Hearty handshake.Gin Tama is a very successful Shonen Jump series that has been running in Japan since 2004. It's being released by Viz 6 times a year in their 'Shonen Jump Advanced' line (where it is less than successful, but hey, they can't all be Naruto), and Vol. 13 just came out this month. The basic premise combines a gag comedy with a samurai action manga. The manga is not afraid to veer wildly back and forth between these - 2/3 of the time it's stupid self-referential gag manga (Gin frequently can be found reading Shonen Jump, and a recent chapter arc has the characters fighting each other after seeing their rankings in the new popularity poll), but when it gets serious...
